I'm with you hoss. It only takes once to ruin things forever. And for what? Laziness? I'm not losing an eye for something preventable. Ever shoot reloads? What happens if you get a faulty round and you get a KB? Not to mention, if you get sloppy about basic safety there, what else are you going to get sloppy about? Nor am I interested in permanent hearing loss, or constant ringing in my ears. I work around enough loud things as it is. I even wear ear muffs when I'm grinding blades. Nor do I want to become another statistic for that one crowd to point to.

We have glasses.... Not worried about buying them....

Are you guys saying even with small caliper rifles you get out hearing and eye protection?

I can understand hearing protection for loud firearms, and can understand eye protection if your shooting pistols, or rifles up close, especially at metal targets...

But... Shooting 17s and 22s from 50-125 yards... At paper and cardboard targets... Just seems like overkill to me... Lots shoot these calipers just to avoid the hearing protection lol

I'm not saying others shouldn't... Safety is always a good thing... But I have shot with many many people.... Never seen anyone ear up and throw on safety glasses to shoot small caliper rifles on private property.... Hell I don't remember anyone wearing safety glasses to shoot any rifle on private property.

Maybe just the backwoods hillbilly type people I have been around...

Plus, it's one thing to make the kids wear protective gear. It's another to set the example.

Muffs with pistolas and plugs with rifles/shotguns. Glasses always. A level 2 hazmat suit for gatherings. Tyvek and condoms around town.

Google rimfire kaboom. There are plenty of documented cases. I've seen people drink and shoot firearms on private property too. Doesn't mean mixing firearms and booze is a good idea. It's your life and your eyes and ears though. I'm not about to tell you what to do, just what I do.

As for ears, a rimfire round puts out 134-152 decibels. Above 85 can cause permanent hearing damage, particularly if it's long or repeated exposure, as in the case of a range session. Again, it's your choice. I always have at minimum my surefire plugs in, even if I shoot rimfire. I usually double up for larger caliber stuff. I'll ditch the hearing protection if and when the Hearing Protection Act passes and I can get a bunch of suppressors.

I guess...

I figured it was something closer to condoms... More people say they use them than actually do, but most make excuses NOT to..

Guess that's just me too lmao!

Well, I suppose if you understand the risks and aren't worried about it, then it's your call. I'm just worried about my various balls and want to protect all of them. :D

What manner of hearing protection do you boys use when you squirrel hunt? I tend to stalk and listen for cuttings falling and don't wear any at all.

I never wore hearing or eye protection shooting .22s growing up. Never saw anyone wearing earplugs. Shot god knows how many rounds. My response to those that say you should always wear hearing protection is a resounding "Huh, what's that?".

I wear both ear and eye protection on a commercial range. Since there are more folks shooting that just me, there are relatively constant loud bangs exceeding 150 Db. I've been hit in the head (and elsewhere) by flying/ricocheting brass NOT from my weapons. Sometimes I've been hit in the face with an ejected cartridge that ricocheted of a cap/hat bill, hence ALWAYS light weight shooting glasses at minimum.

At my home range, ear protection always, eye protection is light weight shooting glasses for cartridge ejection issues, not the heavier stuff I wear at a commercial range.

Hunting, it depends - deer/hogs from a blind - eyes and double ear protection for sure, plugs and MMEs- that 30/30 or .223 or 30.06 is twice as loud inside a small shack as outside in the open. Out in the open, ear plugs. Squirrel hunting w/ a .22 - eyes only. Not enough shots to worry TOO much about hearing loss (that's already happened. :( :D ) and I want to be able to hear the critters chittering at me.

They got ear pro that amplifies sounds for hunting, but reduces those short sharp sounds (eg, gunfire). I just want them to make ones that also work as a bluetooth headset for my phone.

Meh, Its all overrated

Same here.

My every day wear sunglasses are my eye-pro when I'm outdoors shooting. But they are ANSI and Z87(?) rated. They actually are Ka-Bar made too. When at an indoor range I use eye and double ear and usually a ball cap as well.

Im needing to free up some funds and space. So Im considering what knives I can live without. Is any one looking for user not in production knives?

I never wear hearing protection when I hunt, I still hunt deer and squirrel so hearing protection is kind of counterproductive

and my shooting glasses are just my everyday glasses

Certain Kabars, Beckers and Westerns - yes. Other than those - no. PM me with what you feel you can live without and I'll compare to my want list, which can be rather long at times :D

I have a set that I use on my son when we are shooting, so he can hear my instructions clearly. I can also plug them into my phone/ ipod to hear music if I need headphones :D

These are the kind I was suggesting that Todd could use in the vehicle when transporting the hyper caffeinated teenage girls.

.17 and .22WMR are wicked loud under any sort of roof or against a large berm. Even .22LR out of a pistol gets noisy.
If it doesn't bother you, that's because you've already lost hearing. I don't recommend the same strategy for .223! :D

.22LR out in the open is pretty quiet, but I almost never get to shoot in that environment except for hunting. These days I wear electronic muffs when hunting anyway. Keeps my ears warm.
