I wish, HS won't be open for another 2 months, and even then I doubt they would let.me. ring this to work on. They barely tolerate multitools when we show up for weekend work calls. I might be able to do it home, not sure if I have the tools needed or not

Tools? Saw. Sandpaper. More sandpaper - unless you have a wood rasp. Brass rod. Hammer. Two part epoxy. Tape or clamps.

And some wood.

Oh, and a screwdriver to pop the rest of the current scales off.

Edit : see below for better pin option.

The original wood is apple wood. Do a search on "USMC Bolo applewood" for links to other postings about this knife.

As gleaned from an article by Mr. Frank Trzska:

For unknown reasons, the original specs for these knives called for apple wood handles. This was the only apple wood specs he ever found.

In a letter dated 08 Dec 1941 (the Monday after Pearl Harbor), John Chatillon & Sons requested that birch, beech and maple be allowed due to the difficulty in locating apple wood.

So you could use any of the 4 woods for replacements. Also the pins are un-heat treated steel pins. The mild steel rods at one of the big-box home improvement stores would be a cheap source of appropriate pins for re-handling "authentically.

I might try that, do you guys have any tips For getting the handles off in one peice? You can kind of see it in the picture, but who ever this belonged to had carved the handle to fit their hand, I'm assuming while in theatre, and I would like to keep that if possible

Can you tell if the scales are glued on? If they aren't glued, you might be able to drill out the pins and they basically fall off.

Spike: Maybe just get some decent epoxy, glue on the broken piece and see if you can get some under the scales....maybe drill the pins as has been suggested. I get brass pin material at my local ACE hardware. If you've got good epoxy, the pins are almost unneeded....mostly for shear strength. CA (cyanoacrylate - superglue) might fix the crack, though it's not very elastic or shock resistant (in my experience) like a good epoxy. Do a little research, go slow and you should be good. Better to have the satisfaction of doing it yourself (IMO) than sending it to someone who doesn't really have the same emotional investment in it.

I think I'll give this a try when I get back from philmont. I'll need to clean of my dad's work bench so I'll have access to a vice

All depends on what kind of wood you want. If you are looking for applewood, I can't help you. Maybe GSOM will know something.

Packing up now to go to the woods tomorrow. Staying till Sunday this time. Happy to get away for a few days.

We are suppose to get some rain... But this time of year it says that EVERY weekend so im not letting that stop me. This will be my last trip out before the move so im ready to enjoy it come rain or shine!!

Wife's cousin and her son are coming as well. They have never been camping. Never slept outside. Should be interesting LOL

Thanks brother.

Yep, hammockin! Hell i hammock even at home bud. I barely ever sleep in the bed anymore. I have the eno wall mount set up in the living room. When i get tired i just snap the hammock up and catch a couple hours!! A hammock is a necessity as far as im concerned anymore. If mine ripped or got lost somehow id have another ordered the same day.. Hell id sell a knife if i had to.

Way more comfortable. I never wake up with back pain anymore. I dont get acid reflux when i first lay down like i do on a bed. And i can sleep for an hour and feel well rested, in the bed i sleep for an hour and wish i hadnt LOL

Even more fun outdoors though, thats for sure. Except the rain... But i have a couple tarps... Damn speaking of that i forgot to order some more 550.. Looks like i need to scrounge around for some cordage.

Have fun in the woods this weekend WW! I'm jealous.... I want to go camping :(

Email me sometime today (from my avatar drop down). I, uh......know, like....a guy.

Why am I not surprised that you know a guy...that hooks other guys up with wood :D

I got some guy named Lee. His Valley store is a short distance away. When I go I look for exotic woods. :D
