Snarking at the speed of sludge...

Spent some time shooting today. Deer hunting season starts next Saturday. Amanda and I have never hunted before and are new to firearms in general so we took some time today to learn more about our firearms and get used to shooting them.

My Dad handed down to me a Winchester model 94 30-30 that was made in 1966. He used to hunt before I was born. This gun has sat for over 35 years so today I had it looked over and cleaned up and put a few rounds through it. I have to say it was a good feeling using this old gun that my Dad has shot deer with. Even though I don't have a lot of experience with this gun it already is sentimental because it was my Dad's. It felt great getting it back in shape and testing it out.

I hope it brings me luck this season!

Jeremy
Good luck!
I recently got a 94 as well and I love it.

And while getting a deer is exciting I feel that hunting is more about connecting to nature, there's just something soothing almost, spiritual, of just walking through the woods on quiet morning. Knowing man has hunted in these vary places for thousands of years

Love to hear this type of stuff. I used to deal a lot in firearms with my father in law many years ago. To make a very long story short, his relationship with the whole family went sour over the years and that came to a screeching halt. Anyway, my point is, I have owned, shot, sold a few hundred of guns. Still have a few today. But the ones I'm most partial to are the old ones that have the sentimental value. As if that's not enough. Most of those guns are made better than anything out there today. I have a old Winchester model 12 that my granddad bought for my dad when he was a boy. Still have both barrels and everything. That sumbitch will out shoot any shotgun today. Once I busted 98 out of 100 clays with it, and I by no means am a professional shooter.

Most states have a hunters education coarse. If your admitting your not very familiar with guns, I suggest you inquire about it and take it. As much as I love guns I encourage there safe usage. I lost a childhood friend to a careless gun accident, its no joke. Not saying your a child. But it never hurts to be educated when it comes to firearms.

Thanks for the tip about the hunters education course. It is a prerequisite before anyone can get a hunting license in Maine. Amanda and I completed it last weekend. It was a great course and helped a lot with a safety mindset with guns and hunting law in general.

They actually had a model 94 as a teaching gun to learn how to safely operate it.

Thanks guys!

Jeremy

Egad, what a cheap shot....

You had to scrape low in the barrel to throw that on bighoss..

Hey, I gotta get my snarks in when I can. :)
I'm usually pulling a vacuum on the aft most lactose dispensing mechanism when it comes to zingers.

This was back when I lived in Oregon and was about 15 years old. So it's a teenage thing.

MY thing was not during my teenage years. I got most of it out of my system earlier -

age 7 - I hooked my two dogs (a border collie named Chico and a rat terrier name Spotty) to my Western Flyer red wagon to make a chuck wagon. Went well, until a cat came by.

age 8 -fell off a 14 ft high corn sheller head first into plowed ground. had road rash from my forehead to my belly button.

age 8 - hooked a 70+ lb flathead cat while fishing under a bridge. pulled me and the rod/reel right in. Being a stubborn Germanic farm boy, I refused to let go of my rod/reel, so the fish was pulling me down the river. Grandfather jumped in and pulled me, the rod/reel and the fish out. Took that fish in a wash tub to show and tell at school on Monday. Then my grandfather "butchered" it and froze it. Had catfish for a couple of months.

age 9 - while oiling my bicycle chain, managed to get my left index finger hung between the chain and gear (Bendix brake - no free-wheeling in reverse, had to crank my finger all the way around to get it loose. last time I ever worked on a bike without a wrench at hand to loosen the wheel if necessary.

age 11 - went rabbit hunting, thought I had shot one, and that it fell in a hole that was right by where I shot it. reached in, felt something long and furry, thought "ears", came out with a less than happy skunk by the tail, which soon led to my first close encounter with "eau de skunk". also was the last time I blindly stuck my hand ANYWHERE. (notice I did a bunch of "thinking" during this episode of my life - my only excuse was I was also "thinking" about my first girl friend too.)

age 12 - jumped out of a tree into a honey suckle bush and came out with a garden spike sticking through my foot and sneaker with a 2x4 attached. was less than fun getting it removed.

Dres - The 94 is a great gun. I love mine and can only imagine how much more having family behind it would mean.

HA! Love the phraseology! Never heard it put quite that way before.

Wake Up Reprobates!!! Wish it were Sunday cuz that's my fun day! Just another manic Monday...

Dang, that's awesome. I'd rather take scrawny deer with an heirloom than a trophy with a brand new gun.

Sound like you have a lot more in common with MM than I do! :D

The Model 12 is a fine shotgun. Shot trap with a Model 12 for years and maintained good scores for one who never had any formal training. Still have two trap-grade Model 12's and three or four other Model 12's lying around the house. Even have one Model 42 (.410 version of the M12).

They don't make 'em like that anymore! :D

The 11 is sweet, I wouldn't have believed it but the micarta is amazing as well. All I need now is a current production version and my "working collection" will be complete. Of course how many versions does one man need?! (The answer is 5 apparently.)

Biscuits and gravy will make 'em grow like weeds.

Time for a custom carry rig to hold them all!
