Sneak peak at the new Arc Lite :)

I have one of these from DDR and it is a great size. I really like it. I carry and use mine every day. The Camillus one is a must for anyone who likes small FB. By the pic it looks the same as the custom. Good choice for your neck knife Willand Camillus.

Hi Will & Co.-
Any chance of a few of these turning up at the NYC show in Nov.?
Thanks- (tucking an extra $20.00 into my sock just in case...)

medusaoblongata:

How does 420HC Stainless compare to AUS6M or ATS-34 or other steels

It is far weaker and much less wear resistant which translates to very poor edge holding as compared to most blade steels. Phil Wilson uses it for his kitchen knives and for example it blunts about 4-5 times as fast as his 154CM on hemp rope.

On the positive, it is however very resistant to chipping and corrosion and easy to sharpen using a butchers steel, why is why Wilson uses it on kitchen knives. For normal utility I would prefer something with far more edge strength and wear resistance as I would rather not have to constantly sharpen a knife outside of the kitchen.

It is also a very cheap steel in terms of materials cost as well as working, which is why the $20. So no, obviously you are not getting high end performance out of a $20 piece, but that is kind of expected. Decent blade shape, but the handle makes the Buck Strider look ergonomic.

I can never tell from a picture, is it ground both sides or is it chisel ground? Being Scottish I'm never quite as quick as you Colonial types to start chucking my money around

The mini tech lock can be had from Blade tech. I dont know the price.

As for all the nice words thanks.

As for Cliff thanks for the up on the knife Cliff.

One thing I have learned in life.
One of the folks who invented the light bulb I think it was Edison said...

Before I hire a new employee I take them to lunch. If they taste there food before the add salt or pepper then I hire them . If they salt and pepper before they eat they have a closed mind . I dont hire them.

The handle on this knife was designed to be ergo without scales. But I guess lifetime of experiences dont count to you Cliff as always. You salted your food before you ate it again. Your opinion is based on a knife you never used. Go figure.

As for the steel choice. For the price point it is a great value. PLUS it has a real kydex sheath.

Cliff,

"It is far weaker and much less wear resistant which translates to very poor edge holding as compared to most blade steels."

Cliff is correct to a point. When comparing steels it is very important to keep things in perspective and the main thing to keep in perspective here is price. Folks this is a 100% US made product coming for a manufacturer with an incredible track record for offering Quality-VS-$$$=KICK ASS PERFORMNACE & BANG FOR THE BUCK! Not to mention you are getting a Kydex sheath and not a plastic one!

This knife is obviously made to compete with the KISS knife simply because both are at the same price point. 420HC compares very favorably to AUS-6M, the steel offered on the Stiff Kiss. IMHO the handle is going to fill my palm much better then the slim profile of the Stiff Kiss. I love the kiss folks but at the same price the Arc Lite wins in my book.

The performance of both knives should be very comparable and I will be happy to test both in a real worl comparison. I will hold any factual statements until then as should Cliff. Not dissing you Cliff but it seems you made a judgement before holding the knife, something I never really do but you have more experience than me on testing so I will step aside.

Phil Wilson uses it for his kitchen knives and for example it blunts about 4-5 times as fast as his 154CM on hemp rope.
So how much is his 154CM versions? Perspective Cliff

Yep it will not chip like a Mad Dog

Ya I am ready for a Mad Dog fight, bring it on

Cliff is ready too!

OK Cliff I am with you there so what would you suggest at $20?

It is also a very cheap steel in terms of materials cost as well as working, which is why the $20. So no, obviously you are not getting high end performance out of a $20 piece, but that is kind of expected. Decent blade shape, but the handle makes the Buck Strider look ergonomic.

Huh? The Buck Strider ergonomic? You used those three words in the same sentence! Just messing with you. I have not held an Arc Lite but I know Darrel, and ergo is his middle name! He is not ergo but his knives are. Sorry Darrel cheap shot there but hey us big guys can rib each other right?

Anyway, the Arc Lite will/should be a kick ass knife for the money. Heck a Kydex sheath alone costs that much!

OK Look at it this way. You buy a cool Kydex neck sheath for $20 and we will throw in the Arc Lite
smile.gif

And Cliff I am just ribbing you but please make sure that when you talk about knives that cost less than a good dinner or a night at the movies that you keep everything in perspective.

Yow! I didn't mean to start anything, I just didn't know if 420hc was like 420j2 or 420v. Ok, cool it guys. I think I had my question answered and the discussion is getting a little OT.

And thank you all very much for the information, it is greatly appreciated.

I have handled the tanto crkt kiss and did not like the slim handle. I can't believe that the Arc Lite is only $20. Is Cuda going to come out with any more Darrel Ralph designed knives?

420hc is NOT like 420j2 at all. In my tests with 440a and 420hc the 420hc preforms better. I also got a higher rc hardness.
It held the edge about 10 percent better.
It was a breeze to resharpen also.
One of the purposes of this steel choice was not only price point in production, but when a neck knife is hanging around your neck, it is a high moisture area of your body. As stated above it has great stain resistance.
I feel it is a great steel for an every day carry.

As for the question about more Camillus products ..... Will can answer that one

Sgian Dubh,
Yes the ArcLite is ground on BOTH sides of the blade, and flat ground at that

Rogue Spear,
Darrel is an awesome designer/maker. We have enjoyed working with him on this project. He has a gifted insite into the fine line between custom and production. I'm not going to mention anything specifically, but I'm sure Darrel and CAMILLUS/CUDA will be talking in the future.

This is gonna be kewl

I've been holding off getting a MDP KISS because of it's chisel grind and plastic sheath..but at least it's not a tanto!
smile.gif
However, this beautte is traditionally ground, and flat ground at that! Plus a kydex sheath..and all for less than the MDP KISS!!! One will definitely find a home hanging from my neck - $20!!!!!

------------------
You could put nacho cheese sauce on it...

I have the MDP stiff kiss, and it is not chisel ground. It is flat ground on both sides. Still, the knife is really tiny, and the handle is too small.

Will, I live about 10 miles from the Camillus factory. I'd be more than happy to drop by and pick one up for field test and review during hunting season, and then report the results for y'all.

This is definatly a "must have knife." It looks to be a greak neck knife and a great value. Thanks Camillus and Darrel, you guy's rock!

Looks like Mama could get some "STEAK KNIVES" for Christmas! Now, wouldn't that be festive, all those kydex sheathes sitting next to everyone's plate at the table!
