Society is breaking down, ya have to move on...what knife ?

sorry im not a troll, some in this world cant listen to reason be reasoned with or stand the truth. let the party begin ;)

Nothing wrong with your suggestion of a machete. Machetes are useful. But that does not mean that a machete is the one knife to have when you have to have one.

Because you see the advantages of a machete, doesn't mean everyone else will see those same advantages. I've seen some convincing evidence that a plain old axe is more than enough of a tool to be "the one".

You'll find a divergent set of experiences and opinions here, try to get not too upset when not everyone in the playground agrees with you.

We all have our own truths.

i love these threads...:D

though i normally don't carry big knives, here's my choice..:)

Well spoken rotte. I like to think of it as different strokes for different folks.

A lot of people have orient there choice towards bugging out away from the cities to the forests or woods. That is a knife selected towards fire making, skinning, wood work, chopping and food preparation. Perhaps a medium (bk2, sfno, skinny ash) to larger (golok, machete, nmfbm, fbm)

But to put a different spin on things has anyone looked at the scenario where the SHTF, something other than zombie attack or total power black out with city street riots, to something that is more likely to happen (and seem to be happening more lately) like major storm damage (hurrican Katrina), wide area flooding, earthquakes and now large bush fires or wildfires?

I really like the medium sized blades like the cg ash1 where its short enough to be carried and strong enough to pry with and maybe even a bushwacker BM since its lighter but what if you were trapped in an urban situation and had to break through a brick wall or rescue someone in a building?

I guess you could use the two just mentioned but it would probably be hard work. What would come in real handy would be the back of a solid axe to smash bricks. As someone has already pointed out, an axe can be choke gripped up by the head for fine cutting or skinning. Not as good as a rat rc4 but would work fine.

I know that a single blade can't do everything and there are some choices from others that can just about do it all. But in a real situation maybe a single blade is unrealistic. Like others I would like two or more. A small and a big (like a skinny ash and a machete).

But following the original question in that if only you had time to grab one if the SHTF scenario then it would probably be a mid to largish (6" to 8") A cg ash1 to maybe a nmsfno or sar8. Personally any mid to largish would do the job either it be a busse, cold steel, rat, kabar, becker or even a mora.

In an emergency situation you might not even have the time or choice to get what you really want and only the time to grab anything. I like to think that what ever you do grab I would still like to have a sharp mind. Learn how to use any blade of any size or shape. Your skills will be the most important choice you can have and practice practice practice.

Someone quoted Bruce Lee once in this forum and I think it holds true. 'It is not enough to know, you must do.'

something like this :D love a good sized bowie...prolly D2 steel, have a tomahawk made of it and its one tough SOB steel.

Well said, abchopper. Over the years (and I've got quite a few of them under my belt), I've seen just about everything undergo a catastrophic failure. Sure, they were "abused" by anybody's definition. But in a true SHTF scenario, that's pretty much to be expected.

There are only a few things that really have a tried-and-true track record going back over 70 or 80 years of hard use in the worst conditions imaginable. I'll stick with them, thank you.

And yes, a good axe (not this plastic-handled crap some people are making today) certainly falls pretty cleanly into that category as well.

hey Robert B - how about a couple nice close-up pics of that Bowie?

Who's the maker? It looks fantastic! thanks

In all likelihood, this is the one that is most likely present in my EDC bag at work on a daily basis. Compact, sturdy and versatile carry options.

sog knives seal 2000 on my belt , kabar TDI plain edge in left front pocket , plain edge ka bar mule folder in right front pocket (these two are my EDCs) or i might get something like a specops for my seal 2000 and piggyback my leatherman new wave or my swiss tool spirit in it. my codl steel magnum kukri machete would be more then enough for SD after that , unless they have guns

^^^ That reminds me of some blade I seen before...hmmm....Oh yeah its a camp challenge knife!!!

Aye Bruce that is a good looking knife. Not only that it's got proven performance.

I got the knife back a couple weeks ago, along with a S&N axe that I bought. I'm looking forward to putting the axe to use - something like quartering a moose, but hunting season is over for this year:(

If the world did fall apart I would grab for the camp knife and the S&N Hudson Bay axe.

does anyone listen to reason, a 10 dollar machete, borang, porang, will out cut, and perform more task than most of the blades you guys have posted, do you believe they have some kind of magical powers because they are made of some special super steel that has been honed by the spirits and blessed by angels. or are you just advertising.

Well...there is of course some merit in this statement as much can be done with pretty much any sharpened piece of steel. Starting with nothing at all even an old rusted lawnmower blade could be looked upon as a gift from the gods. However for those of us fortunate enough to have had knives made to our own specs and designed for our own individual uses, or have found the knives we like for our particular skills sets...whatever the cost... the thought of leaving them behind and taking instead a $10.00 machete...well, that thought just really makes no sense at all. Being as we have them they are likely to be the ones that go with us...where ever. Personally I really just don't care for machetes in my current environment, I love them in the tropics, but not here. I have experimented with the blades that work for me for several years now and I'd take a heavy Bowie over a machete here any day.

I like the idea of the Ecohawk. Looks useful.

Your post would have been better received if you ditched the Ecohawk and cut the boxspring up with a Randall 14. Everyone knows that anything other than a Randall 14 is simply inferior.

Especially when they are all shiny and unused. My safe is too full so I had to start looking for a new spot to keep my collection.

Here in Southern Oz

Fallkinven S1 or F1

Then if time allowed agonise over

1. hatchet or trail hawk or machete tradeoff

2. How much of the leatherman Charge, Benchmade Ritter mini grip, RAT Izula, & Spyderco ladybug I felt like carrying

3. DC3 or DC4

Some situations would favor an axe over a machete.
Different levels of tool use experiences all around.
I appreciate the varied opinions in the matter. It really makes me realize how much more is possible.

I personally prefer an itak or bolo. Largely because that's the tool I'm most comfortable with, most exposed to.

But seeing that hawk application makes me think....I need to learn to use those hawks...
That's how it gets started for me...the learning......I mean.
Thanks everyone for sharing.
