Society is breaking down, ya have to move on...what knife ?

Some situations would favor an axe over a machete.
Different levels of tool use experiences all around.
I appreciate the varied opinions in the matter. It really makes me realize how much more is possible.

I personally prefer an itak or bolo. Largely because that's the tool I'm most comfortable with, most exposed to.

But seeing that hawk application makes me think....I need to learn to use those hawks...
That's how it gets started for me...the learning......I mean.
Thanks everyone for sharing.

Figurecarver

Well said Figurecarver!!

The hawk made an impression on me too. I thought it was innovative.

As for my choice: I would carry a barong, for work and defense.

I would take my M95 Sissipuukko - a great cutter/whittler/stabber and my 19'' Wetterlings axe. :)

Hey Pitdog, did you go to see "The Road" for your inspiration for this particular thread?:D

In the Book the guy thought a firearm was of extreme importance , but did carry a knife as well .
In respect for the OP's question of which one knife to take to for WTSHTF or TEOTWAWKI , when you bug out you most likely can't go back for any thing and I would imagine that pickens on the escape route will be thin so the choice of knife is very important to do all the things you want or need to do. Is there such a knife and will you have it with you when you are forced to run for safety?
I would pick a buck 110 even though I would prefer a 7 1/2" Bowie with a very pointy blade made with a steel that is easy to sharpen , the Bowie would be hard to have with you all the time but the 110 could always be there. IMHO many B.O.B. will be left in the auto or at the storage spot because we can't pick when we must bug out.

From what I have in my personal collection right now. I would take Dan Koster Survivor...

I think I would rather have a large knife tying to pretend to be a small knife as opposed to the other way around. From what I have seen in other cultures around the world the large knife is generally the blade of choice for surviving.

I love the handle on those things !!!!

I never leave home without my Busse & my Vector hawk.
If I had to chose one I would take the hawk.
I can use it to slice, whittle, chop, hammer, smash…Etc.
It will do what ever a knife or an axe will & it is rolled into one strong, lightweight package.
If you have ever had the chance to use one of Vec’s hawks, you would agree.
It is a superior tool.

I just received the Eco hawk & this little gem is going in to my ultra light EDC kit.

If I could only take one knife, it would probably be a stainless mora, or maybe my Buck 119, heck it might even be an endura or my Vic farmer. Would I be able to pry with it? No, but that's why I have pry bars. Would I be able to break down a door with it? No, but that's why I have a sledge. Would I be able to defend myself with it? Yeah, but it would only be a back up to my pistol, which is a back up to my shotgun. Would I beable to build a shelter with it? Nope, thats why I have a folding saw and an axe.
I hate to spoil the fun, I guess I should have said Busse Battle mistress? :)
Now lets say I'm lost in the woods and can only have one knife. Then I think the Busse Battle Mistress would be a good choice since I wont be able to carry all that other crap around with me.

Since I always have 3-4 knives on me already, I'd say my GB Scandinavian Forest Axe. Combined with my Izula (back pocket) I could handle most any task.

Easy call for me also:

Ive used this knife for a few years now, and it has proven its worth. Also, with my limited knowledge, Im assuming that the overall design would work as a fighting knife.

:) Great thread! (after reading through the usual chest thumping :jerkit:)

Lots of insightful posts.

If it was going down, and I could grab only one knife, Id go for my new Gossman "pointman" I designed. Hopefully the brown stuff doesnt hit the fan till I get a handle on it, and some kydex! :o;)

001-5.jpg

Since I designed it to my ideal diamensions and specs for a do all knife, I know it will work for me, and I KNOW Gossmans stuff is top tier.

This not counting the small fixed blade ALWAYS in my pocket. Either an Izula, Bravo Necker, or Gossman PSK.... plus the multitool in my BOB. ;)

If for some reason I couldnt grab my Gossman, next runner up would be an RC3.

+1 on the Busse FFBM!

Edit: now with picture so you don´t forget how it looks! :D

There are two threads on that cleaver going around. One in the makers forum and one in the F/S forum.

I live in Tokyo, Japan, that is very worried about future huge earthquake.
Tokyo and its around is very crowded and extremely hard to escape to woods and water resources.

Every vehicles will be banned to use personally in whole shaked areas and
so many people will appear for foods and waters.

Rivers are so wasted as to be doubtful to drink,
and something about water purifier doesn't be purchased at all.

First aid kit is sold but it doesn't include medical materials
so that we will have to buy a pouch that attached band-aids as first aid kit.

Hygiene will be destroyed so quickly because so many people lives in their apartment
and they can foot only paved surfaces and are forced to depend on public services at their live.

Forest is planted to sell and medicinal knowledge is well limited so that
ethical/political ECO scream is laud enough to hate every part of practical methods.

And it is banned to carry almost all of knives, Gerber LST for example in Japan,
so that it is in fact impossible to carry big knife except cooking blades at such time.

What knife then...

I'm looking into the Martindale Golok but atm if I had to grab one it'd be my Condor Bolo Machete like this one.
