SOG's Official Response

:jerkit:This is my 1st post, just some thoughts from from an old VN era paratrooper.Right out of the chute I have to say I'm not impressed with the original, much less the copy.Just my preference in a folder.I use my knives hard in daily use.For the last 7 years my Flash 2 has served me well at work, and on the ranch.I recently got a Spyderco Persistence and it too is a really good knife, despite the fact deployment is some what sticky and it's made in China.Too sum it all up,everyone has copied the 1911.45,the Glock, and most recently Ruger copied the Kel Tec (I went for the Ruger). One thing we can all agree on is (Thank God We Live In A Free Country).

Dude, I'll continue to respond to any post in this thread that I want to, like yours for instance. If I'm the one having trouble "letting things go", why can't you stop yourself from looking at this thread? There are plenty of threads on this forum that I'm not interested in. Let me give you my secret, don't read them if you don't like what's in them. I know this might be difficult for some to realize, but it's not my fault that you can't stop looking at this thread- it's your own. Take some responsibility for your actions. ;):cool:;):D;)

Wow! I feel bad I pinged your emotional meter. A little constructive Criticism seems to set you off as you seem to have all kinds of it for everyone else. Don't worry about my replies, just troll feed, eat up! ;)

A good sign of a weak position is when someone resorts to ad hominems rather than addressing actual points. Name calling might work well for you elsewhere, but it only shows that you don't have any real points of discussion here.

ironic that you are the one coming in his thread and telling him to quit posting. :jerkit:

some of us are still interested in this topic.

IIRC, Benchmade had some pretty blatant Spyderco rip-offs. The Pika's come to mind, though I'm pretty sure there were more. It's unfortunate that a company like SOG (and I have several SOG knives) would stoop so low. It seems as if they've been trying harder and harder to get money these days, what with awkwardly made throwing knives and tomahawks, plus the whole Fusion series. Not to say there isn't still reason to buy SOG knives, but they really have been on a downhill slope these past few years. Moving production from Seki Japan to Taiwan comes to mind.

Actually, I had forgotten about having read this article 19 years ago when the topic came up, this is nothing new for SOG.

page 95, right at the bottom I hear your claim, but i don't see the resemblance, however i do know of some other blades that very closely match.

What is the Pika supposed to look like that Spyderco makes? Just because it has a round hole it looks like a Spyderco?

Edit: Not being a smarta#% just curious

They're pretty similar to the 2nd or 3rd generation Endura/Delicas, though not so much the more recent ones. Both knives have changed a bit over the last couple of years.

The Delica immediately comes to mind. Look at the handle shape!

thanks SOG for making knives. I have a couple of them and I like them. they are fun, fine and functional.

Thanks to the OP for posting this thread. I almost made the mistake of buying a new SOG. Now that I realize they are IP thieves I will not. Their lame statement does not change my mind one bit.

What a shame; their old designs (late 80s/early 90s) were really nice.

Actually the sogzilla is imported and uses a chinese steel so its probably made in china.
Also whos to say the quality is any better than the cheap chinese knockoff that you mentioned? I just want to add though if SOG manages to get this on the shelves of stores like Walmarts where most people who are looking probably either never heard of Spyderco or just not interested in shelling out 65-80 dollar range for an Endura or Delica vs 45 MSRP for the Sogzilla that would seem like adding insult to injury to me. Personally
I think it looks like an Endura, Byrd knife, Pika 2 and HG Griptilian got together and produces it as offspring, that being said I personally would love if spyderco would take the bayonet clip idea from them and use it on the Delica and Endura or other models to.
that would be cool.

The Pika is more like the AFCK than a Spyderco. The AFCK the way I read it was an idea for a knife first submitted to Spyderco who turned it down for some reason I cant remember, so the customer went to Benchmade and Benchmade agreed to make it, the customer also wanted the hole in the blade, thats why the AFCK has the hole. Also i just wanted to add that ive had an AFCK and have a Delica 4 and love both knives but the AFCK had better steel, and a better fit and finish, and cost less.

Yep, exactly what I was thinking.

The AFCK was modeled after the Spyderco Police, and was assisted in its design by none other than Spyderco's Sal Glesser, working in collaboration with Benchmade. The "customer," by the way, was none other than SEAL Team 6 member Chris Caracci, who used to have a forum here. Mr. Caracci wanted a G-10, liner locking version of the Spyderco Police model. Benchmade, with Sal Glesser's help, gave it to him, and to us.

People who say that the BM Pika looks more like the BM AFCK than a Spyderco model are actually saying that the BM Pika looks like a BM that was based on a Spyderco model.:D
