Spring CA Gathering Above Visalia: 4/30-5/2/10

Chris,

We'll be delighted to see you up there!

Please bring that Norlund Nessmuk. The other day I almost bid on one that still had original paint on the blade. Apparently not used. Some lucky guy got it for $125. I'm waiting on my curly maple Lee Reeves (by March, maybe) so I didn't feel like bidding on the Norlund.

Take it easy,

DancesWithKnives

You bet I'll bring it. And others too!

I had a lot of fun last time. Count me in for this one.

For those of you who haven't been, the area is amazing and worth the drive just to see it.

If you look in the calendar sticky near the top of the W&SS page, you will see listings for this and the prior two Bush Bash events. At lot of info is contained in those. If you would like to see photos of the prior events and descriptions of the carryings on, you can use Google to search Bladeforums for the words "Bush Bash" or "Visalia"---they ought to pull up the old post-event photo threads.

There is no formal schedule or agenda for these gatherings---it's pretty much free form.

Wildewinds,

It was great having you attend the last gathering!

For the next one, we plan to ask lambertiana for some advice on good hiking spots that are nearby. Might even bring my mountain bike.

Chris,

Thanks for bringing the Norlund. Hopefully by then I'll have the new Reeve. Might also find something at the knife show in Vegas. Who knows?

I plan on bringing my .22 again. This time I'll fit it with a hunting scope instead of my benchrest scope and maybe I can bag a squirrel. I really want to learn how to skin it. (never hunted before)

Man, I had to go to Exeter once for work - I wish I could be out there again. That truly is God's country.

You're right---the drive up there is through some exceptionally pretty country. Should be even nicer if we have a moist winter. That would probably bring lots of wildflowers.

Wildewinds,

I've skinned a few squirrels and rabbits and would be happy to assist. One thing that helps is a bucket so you can soak them in water for a few minutes before skinning. If the fur is wet, it's easier to pull off without leaving any hairs on the meat. Not at all necessary, but convenient. I'll try to remember some game shears, which can also make work even easier.

If you are going to do any hunting around here, check out the areas that are in the protected "condor" zone (as if there are any condors around here). I know that some of the areas around here require lead-free bullets when hunting, although I don't know if that applies to .22.

Good point, SconeMeister! Perhaps someone makes a lead-free .22 rimfire round. Alternatively, I could probably find our hunter a 12 ga. and a few steel shot loads---but that would almost be cheating.;)

bump... so who is going this time???
So somebody said this was a free place to camp?

I saw all the pics... it seems like noone cooked on the fire... or a hot cup of tea or coffee..???

Is there any fishing around?

this looks like heaven...any chance of getting something going further north (I'm in Modesto)?
