Spring CA Gathering Above Visalia: 4/30-5/2/10

so, is there any fishing around??? or do we have to take food for the weekend?

There's no fishing by the campsite (that I'm aware of). Last time everyone brought food (well, almost everyone) and we had somewhat of a potluck atmosphere.

Cooking could be done on the fire, but we mainly used camp stoves.

And yes, the camping is free.

bump... so who is going this time???
So somebody said this was a free place to camp?

I saw all the pics... it seems like noone cooked on the fire... or a hot cup of tea or coffee..???

Is there any fishing around?

Cooking on the fire was done a bit but there's often a conflict in uses: People who want to cook on a fire would generally like a flameless bed of coals. People who want to sit around a fire frequently want some flames to warm them. While it's possible to divide a fire and accommodate both (or build two fires), most folks weren't that ambitious.

I've heard that there is fishing at the Hartland Christian Camp, a few miles down the road (you'll pass it on the drive in). They appear to have created some nice big pools with a dam to regulate the river. As I recall, there were some canoes/boats around. You might contact them about whether they would allow you any kind of access.

this looks like heaven...any chance of getting something going further north (I'm in Modesto)?

People are coming from farther than Modesto. However, to answer your question, you could certainly organize a gathering in your area.

From my experience, it is best to give folks several months' notice so that they can set aside time. I suggest that you find a location that is free, relatively uncrowded, and not heavily supervised. If folks can target shoot and practice archery, that may help attendance. I expect you'll get more folks with a car camp than a 4WD outing or a backpacking trip.

Once you have a tentative date and location, I recommend starting a thread to determine whether there is interest in your plan. If so, you could then post it in the calendar sticky near the top of the first page.

Best of luck. If you get something good going, I will check my schedule since Modesto wouldn't be that far from my new location in Western Nevada.

can we make a list of the people going? (edit the first post)
the list should consist of people who are going for sure, and those who think might go...

Is there any other place to go fishing other than that christian campground (closer?)

thanks...

(you can put me as a maybe)

In my experience, it's very difficult to maintain a useful list because peoples' plans change and others don't post their status. Plus, I'll be out of town for a good portion of April. However, folks who are planning to attend are welcome to indicate that.

I am aware of no closer place to fish than the Hartland Christian Conference Center and I don't know what is available there. I simply saw some significant bodies of water on their property.

DWK2, incidentally, not to be off topic, I'll be at the reno show april 16-18. I think I'm in space R1 or R3, things got moved around a bit

If I'm able to stop by, I'll definitely say hello.

Thanks for the update!

I guess another Sunday bump!!!

QUESTION...
I know this is a primitive camping... but I am taking my wife with me if I go... so I am going to ask: Are there any bathrooms around??? How far? I know someone mentioned a camp nearby but any other places or something???

Also, i have a honda civic... will i make it to the place with no problem? (how long is the dirtroad (is it a dirt road???)???

Thanks...

One more... can someone mark this camp on a map (google maps???) ???

Thanks so much...

Man, I'd love to do this... May... hmm. If I had worked all year I could justify it, but at this point I really can't. Something needs to come to Idaho or western Washington, real bad.

No bathrooms. I'd suggest bringing a shovel. :) You could also get one of these: http://www.rei.com/product/679029

A civic will make it no problem. There's only a tiny stretch of dirt. More like a dirt driveway than a dirt road. Maybe 100 yards.

Hard to tell from the satellite photos, but I think this is the spot: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=36.66...665605,-118.967959&spn=0.003752,0.007923&z=18

I know I'm on the right road, but not sure if that's the particular clearing we camp at. Maybe someone else can verify.

Unfortunately, there are no bathrooms nearby. Just bushes.

A few miles down the road is the Hartland Christian Conference Center, which has extensive facilities. I have no idea under what terms they might permit some sort of access. You'd have to contact them.

The dirt road is only a couple hundred yards long and I believe that a careful driver could get a Civic down it. However, even if you parked just off the paved highway, it would not be difficult to carry a tent, sleeping bags, and some chairs the short distance to the camp area. Or someone with a higher clearance vehicle could drive your gear the last couple hundred yards.

I'll leave it to someone with better 'puter skills to handle the map marking. If you look up the Hartland Christian Conference Center, they might have a map. The camp is only a few miles farther up the road.

Edit: I just checked and Hartland's website has a good map and directions. Our primitive camp is just north of Hartland, but before the next intersection shown on the road. Hartland appears to permit day use for $20 and they have a toll free number. Perhaps that would get you access to some bathrooms and fishing ponds.

I'll try calling that camp and see...

When you say a few miles... how many exactly??? I'll check that too...

The reason for a bathroom if for her personal needs :D other than the regular needs :D

I'll have to contact that camp and figure out what to do... Otherwise I won't be able to make it... unless the date is changed :D :D :D

According to wildwinds point in the map and this address from the Hartland camp's website 57611 Eshom Valley Drive, Badger, CA 93603... there is only 1 mile...

Can someone confirm Wildwinds map??? Please??

Thanks Wildewinds....

Use the directions and distance measurements for Bush Bash 1 in the calendar sticky. There are even precise GPS coordinates. These directions got me to the primitive camp with ease, on my first try (and I was first to arrive).

I don't think anyone has attempted a precise measurement from Hartland. It would be difficult to accurately measure from Hartland since the conference center facilities cover a good half mile of road.

Edit: I believe our camp clearing is the larger open area, perhaps 200 yds north of Wildewind's arrow.

If the arrow is 200 yards off that's fine... :D close enough...

I'll still check though...

thanks...
