Spyderco 2020 Lists: Delivered & Upcoming

Regarding blade steels, if you haven't seen/read it yet, you should take a look at this report prepared by BF member @Larrin who tested the "edge retention" performance of 48 different blade steels:

See: Testing the Edge Retention of 48 Knife Steels

A lot of the info in this report is very technical and, if you'd like to see my layman's summary of the gist of the report, you can find that here in the thread that @Larrin created to announce his report:

My Summary Regarding the 48 Steel Edge Retention Report

There are a couple of obvious surprises in the report that may or may not affect your interest in and/or decision to purchase knives made w/specific blade steels in the future, depending how important you consider edge retention to be in selecting a knife.

Yes, and S90V came off pretty well in that data set. People have been dismissing it for way too long.

Odd S90V was looked down upon, Especially with Sal using it in most of their high end Taichung offerings and Carbon Sprint Runs!
Maybe above most peoples sharpening proficiency?

My first custom knife, made for me by Kit Carson back in the 90's, has a blade of S90V. (Then known as 420V.)
I also have a neck knife made by Darrel Ralph a few years later with the same steel.

I've been a fan of the steel for a long time...and was happy to add the carbon fiber / titanium frame lock Military in S90V to those two venerable knives.

S90V is definitely on a short list of steels that I want, but still don't own.

I think the reason some look down on it is just their own preference for steels that are harder, providing more durability and strength at the apex, and for the fine edge. There's something special about a 67 HRC blade in REX-45.

As someone who's only 6 months deep into this knife world, steels like Maxamet, REX-45, K390, 4V, and ZDP-189 have drawn me in the most and I've purchased all those. I'd like some well executed 10V/A11 too.

The tests that Larrin conducted, and then made public, as well as all of the information on his website is of huge value. I encourage everyone to support him on Patreon, I did.

It's incredibly hard to quantify, test, and compare the performance of blade steels.

I wish more people did it through all kinds of different test media. Plastic would be an important data point but we also need more rope and more cardboard.

This and the fact that S30V also performed so well (better than M4/Elmax/S45VN at its lowest hardness level) were the pleasant surprises to me, because I own so many knives using both types of steel, especially Spydercos & ZTs in S30V and Spydercos in S90V.

Yes and also because of S110V seeming like it’s superior (with Nb as well as V carbides).

I would bet that S110V at 63-64 HrC would perform better.

Reality is that they come from different lineages (S90V being a 420 derivative, S110V being purpose designed from scratch) and have similar, but different purposes (S90V is apparently more wear resistant, S110V is more corrosion resistant and probably better for highly corrosive environments).

seems to be a significant (MSRP) price increase on the Native Chief S90v Sprint; Reg S30v ($240), Sprint REX-45 ($245), Sprint S90v ($350). Is this normal?

That Rock Jumper looks awesome..looks almost like a Stretch-style handle with a Wharncliffe? Heck yeah
