Spyderco Bushcraft total failure.(Warning:Knife gore present)

You can't blame failure like this just on skeletonized design. There is also HT, hardness, thickness to consider, also location of the cutouts. I doubt that there would be a failure like this at all if handle material would've not failed first.

Wow that one dramatic failure! I have always wondered how much force is excerted on a blade when battoned. I have seen this failure a few times in the past, and almost always when battoning.

That's very sad. I saw another thread in which the edge on the poster's Bushcraft rolled really easily so I hope the steel on these knives didn't get buggered along with the handles. I hope the one I'm getting on Friday doesn't suffer the same fate as yours.
:(

Not a good feeling in deed. Reminds me of the cracking ZDP MULEs.

I do hope the batch of that steel used for this knife run isn't heat treated too hard, too. That would lead to many broken Bushies in the near future and an even bigger desaster than that knife is already anyway for the company.

Sal, please look into that particular knife and maybe even test one of the remaining seconds for hardness and strength. I would like to find out about possible issues BEFORE I start using that knife... or let's put it that way: I'dlike to be assured that this defect was just bad luck and the other Bushies are as strong and sturdy as they are meant to be!

Man that does suck.

A big thank you for posting this. As I was going to order one on Friday.

I just know you will get comments about how you abused the knife. However I ,for one, firmly believe a knife of 1/8" O1 should be able to handle batoning. Especially one from a respected manfacturer or maker that is designed and marketed for the outdoorsman.

Again thanks for the post.

Agreed. Arguments and definitions of knife abuse totally aside, I feel like if I can baton the crap out of my $10 Mora then I shouldn't have to worry about failure of a Spyderco fixed blade. I'm not expecting it to be a pry bar but I am now admittedly a little worried that I wasted my $90 and should have waited until they worked the bugs out.

This Sojourner that Bryan Breeden made for me is made of 1/8 O-1. I have to admit I had some concerns about using the 1/8 so hard at first but it has been batoned through both hard and soft woods several times without failure, and I am pretty sure there are holes in the tang for the epoxy.

There is a lot to be said for buying a knife from a knife maker who thinks batoning is "cool". I knew Bryan had, as he always does, batoned with it and cut with it before I got it so...

I agree mistwalker. While I don't own one of Mr Breeden's knives.I do own several of Stompers in 1/8" O1 with cut out handles that I have put through some very bad stuff. No damage.

I have even put my little Kabar/Becker BK11 through tougher stuff than the OP.

The owner really needs to bring it to Sal's attention. Sal and his crew would definitely look into it.

I'm in the same boat ... the only way to find out is to give it a proper workout and see what happens.

Good luck.

Hi Savagesicslayer,

Why don't you send it to me. I'd like to put it through the lab. I'll see what I can do about replacing it.

It was reading post where people had put 1/8 O-1 knives from Stomper through such hard use that allowed Bryan to convince me I would like the 1/8 O-1 steel. I live in a rain forest where batoning is often my best chance for dry wood to start a fire (I don't ever carry a hatchet or axe)and I've done so with this knife several times with no problems at all.

It sucks. BUt it is way cool that Sal himself is rescuing you :D
who needs a knife when Sal is here

I've batoned with mine and it's still in one piece.
I do agree that scales give the blade additional strength. 'Strength as a unit" as they say. If the scales are cracked, you give up as little bit of it's integrity.
My intentions when I ordered were to have it rehandled and it will in the near future.

As for the edge and rolls etc, I think any scandi you order may need a little bit of stropping before use. See the Skookum website about finishing the edge for what is advised.
