Spyderco Bushcraft Update

Alright, today is payday and I couldn't pass up on this deal, so I pulled the trigger. This will be my first high end bush craft-type knife. I have tons of money tied up in military-type knives from my days in the military, and lots of folders for EDC and self-defense, but have only bought lower end knives for bushcrafting.

I'm excited, so thank you for posting this up here.

Now to figure out how to take care of that handle, if and when it cracks.

Mine arrived today and was badly cracked on both sides at the front pin. I'm going to get some superglue and sandpaper! It's still a gorgeous knife and sharp....oooo it's sharp.

Post pics of the cracks if you can, and maybe pics of after it's fixed. If mine is bad I plan on using the wood colored epoxy filler.

I hand picked mine at the Factory Outlet today - gorgeous knife and feels great in hand. I was able to get one with very small cracks, so it will be easy to fill them with a bit of super glue. I will post pictures later - just got back from climbing and gonna hit the hot tub :D

here's mine...:D this wasn't one that was sold as a second, i got from a fellow forum mamber, who had gotten it when it came out... i've had it for a few weeks and as of now, it doesn't have any cracks...:o

it's a great knife.. the scales are really comfortable and offer a solid grip..

Thanks for the tip, Mtnfolk Mike. Denatured alcohol is something I have plenty of.

Is ther an actual intended use for the spider hole or is it just a trademark thing?

There was no linseed oil on any of the ones I handled at the factory outlet today. I wonder if some have been cleaned and others haven't, or if the oil wasn't put on all the handles. My handles are almost perfect  :D

Thanks for the pic Rocky. I was figuring the cracks would be around the pins. I still think the handles are purdy :D Mine is scheduled to arrive tomorrow, so I'll see what my scales look like. Can't wait.

I applied several coats of superglue, hand sanded it, then used clear nail varnish to seal it. I'm no perfectionist, yet pleased with the results. It's super sharp! If it goes out again, I bet any one of a dozen makers could fix me right up. Can you imagine what Andy Roy could do with this?

The best thing I've found/used to remove boiled linseed oil and cosmolene is mineral spirits. In fact when I clean up my milsurp rifles I clean the wood and metal with mineral spirits and when applying a boiled linseed oil finish to the wood parts I use mineral spirits to cut the first coat of BLO to let it soak in.

A question for you folks using super glue. Are you cleaning the cracks first with anything? I was thinking about using SG when mine arrives but was thinking about first cleaning the handle and scrubbing the cracks with mineral spirits then flushing the cracks with something like acetone to make sure they are clean. After they are good and dry I would apply the super glue.

As I understand it's similar to other Spyderco fixed blades in that it offers a place to run a wrist lanyard through the blade which is supposed to aid with control of the blade in some cutting situations
