I would never advocate buying a fake Spyderco however, I did my hands on one just for educational purposes ONLY. It is truly amazing and sad the lengths these people go through to copy the PM2. To the trained eye you can tell pretty quick, but it is scary that someone working at Walmart or even Cabelas may not have a clue as to the validity of the knife.

Just because someone works at Cabelas or Wal-Mart doesn't make them an expert at anything other than possibly standing behind the counter, ringing up your items, and processing your sale.

I think this is how the scenario goes....

Scammer buys fake PM2 on purpose online. Scammer goes to store to buy REAL PM2 so he has a receipt.

Scammer then returns FAKE PM2 with receipt for REAL PM2 and now has a REAL PM2 at a FAKE PM2 price of 20-30 bucks.

That is certainly one way it can work. What happened at my local Cabela's was people just came in with the fake PM2s. Since Cabela's sells this model online they must have returned them with no receipt. Plus, this is such a desirable model the "system" might have flagged them as a needed item as they are never in stock. The folks at the return counter had no idea what they had and just did the return. They sent them to the knife counter where I was showing the head knife guy my legit PM2. He said they just got two in and asked if I would like to see them. I said yes but could tell immediately they were fake. I had to inform him of the bad news.

Like Rev said, the folks at the return counter had no clue what so ever. Even this head knife guy, who I had talked to several times before and who I consider to know his stuff, he had no clue. If you aren't actively trying to learn the differences between these very good fakes, it is very difficult to tell. Thus why the education we can provide here is so important.

That's a fake? Looks pretty darned good.....which shows just how tough it is to tell the difference in a fake and real one.

Thanks Les, great video. Picked up a few things I hadn't seen in the others. I'm thinking mine is genuine but I'm far from an expert. I have since dismantled and cleaned it, it was desperately needed. When I did I saw the date stamp on the pivot 02-08, matching the date code on the label. Hoping that's a good sign?

Yeah, I checked out the vid as well. Great job. Thanks Les!!

Hey everyone, fairly new here but fairly experienced in sporting fakes and being able to tell quality vs crap...this whole thread almost had me wanting to send all of my pm2's and other spyderco's back to golden to confirm their authenticity!! Is that crazy? Anyone know the process for sending knives to them for evaluation? Thanks

Looks like there are now fake enduras and enduras with the wave feature. Also fake black G10 UKPK's.

Plus you can not expect to get someone with a PHD to working for minimum wage, Wal-Mart is bad, but Cabelas is worst. The Cabelas in the Phoenix area pays their employee terible, and there is no path to promotion, or management like there is at Wal-Mart.

Spyderco products are only a targets of counterfits, or fake knives. As thery have estasblish a product like OAKLEY SUN GLASSES, people want. So the copies, knockoffs, or counterfit appeal to uneducated deal seekers.

Just like those who copie brands like Micro-Tech OTF Knives, tel many times is all the copies have the same serial numbers. LOL.

What's the deal with this SPOT, is it a fake? I notice it doesn't have the nub in the first hole. Also, the sheath doesn't really fit in the box that great. It's covered in Ren Wax is why it looks marked up.

Looks fine but it should have the "nub".

Strange thing is there's no spot for the nub in the sheath  The sheath for my nubbed SPOT, as well as every other sheath I've seen, has the convexed place for the nub. Maybe it's one of the first ones or a prototype? It's numbered on the blade and the box.

Well looks like this might be one of the few times I'm wrong about Spyderco. I never had much interest in this model but I do own a later version. It does look like at least the first run which you have because it's number didn't have the nub. I can tell you though it's not a prototype.

Also fake black G10 UKPK's.

I think I saw one...
Searched ebay for Spyderco G10 folder and it came up. I'm no slip it enthusiast, but I didn't think the ukpk was assembled in China like the Persistence/Ambitious/Resilience?
Beware of eBay seller "enjoyedb4", they have a fake pm2 also, without the compression lock and listed as assembled in China with a Spyderco blade... or something to that effect.

Also seller "shabster310" appears to have a couple fake pm2 listed currently...

Sketchy stuff.
Can't say I've seen any fake Enduras or Emerson wave openers. Do they have any specifics telltales or lack of marks to look for?

..................

I've not spotted fake knives being offered on eBay, but something that borders on fraud. The eBay title might be "Spyderco Sage", but it you look closely at the photo or read the entire ad, you'll see what is accurately being described is a lesser Spyderco model, perhaps a Tenacious. I see that often enough that now I "ask" the seller a question. In each case I get a "sorry, incorrect listing, mistake, etc" sort of reply.....but I never get the feeling the ad will be changed or withdrawn. This happens also with other items on eBay; shows we must be diligent. I used to try to notify eBay of these apparent "errors", but never received any reply, so figured they don't really care about those. Caveat emptor.

Not surprising. Ebay has definitely changed for the worse.
