Spyderco Fakes & Knock Offs Info

Please, do NOT link to any of the stores that sell these items, why give these thieves free advertising? It is much better to simply post a picture, crop out the name of the "seller" and post it for comparison. Again, the only way to guarantee you buy a legitimate/genuine item is to buy from legitimate stores. By trying to save a few bucks you can end up on the receiving end of something that is worth less than your perceived savings, and it may be potentially unsafe.

I have been exchanging messages with this frustrating ebay seller ever since I found this auction. It's a shame it ends in two hours become some poor guy is spending a lot of money for a counterfeit knife. Seller has been disobliging, arguing with me that his knife is genuine and that I know nothing, even when I have proved it's a fake. I've gathered from our conversation that I am not the only one whom has questioned the authenticity of this knife or even others he has sold in the past. I don't think I'm going to reply to him again but I wanted to make a thread here to see if we can bring this guy down- selling knives like these seems to be par for the course for him.

Ebay seller name is "kpfields"

Here's the listing:

I've already reported the listing to ebay and I am contacting Spyderco customer service. People like this boil my blood.

Here's the first message I sent:

I almost got burned by a guy named Figuralia from Spain on a fake Spin. I reported the fake to Ebay and they withdrew the auction and the seller is "no longer registered" according to Ebay. He did give me a refund. Ebay did their job this time.

Looks like they have the black Southards on the clone sites now, be on the look out if purchasing one. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1427919463.668340.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1427919473.973408.jpg

This is the first time I've ever had 2 Delicas apart at the same time and almost didn't even think to compare internal bits side by side... but then I noticed a few minor differences between these 2 specimens.
Now I'm feeling a little skeptical.
Is the ZDP-189 version produced slightly different than the VG-10? Or maybe manufacturing differences between runs?

See how there is a difference in the cutout on the lock piece? VG-10 just has a straight notch. ZDP-189 has an arc going up to the vertical face of the notch.

Also, the pivot hole in the ZDP-189 version has a notch cut from the hole @ 9 o'clock in the picture.

Also, on the blade tang, the VG-10 does not have a small relief at the bottom of the lock channel.

Am I looking at a knock-off?

Now that I'm reading about all these fakes I'm starting to get worried about my first Spyderco purchase, I ordered from what is supposed to be a reputable online dealer. Don't know if I'm allowed to post who? Is there a list anywhere of proven reliable online dealers?

Hope this helps. :)

Yeah, They're a trusted dealer here, and they are efficient. Enjoy.

Yeah. Their communication has been 110%. From questions I had before the purchase, to answering an email, and then within minutes of actually buying the knife I started getting emails yelling me which stage my order was at. Definitely be buying more from them in the future, and highly recommend them to everyone else.

Did Spyderco ever make knives that were labeled on one side with simply - VG-10 Japan - with the G being misaligned from the V - 10?

Here is a photo of the detail in question of a "Vintage Kopa":

Somehow I doubt it, but I'll let someone more knowledgeable chime in on this.

Just got burned by ebay seller JHC1974. Admitted it was a fake after i pressed him on the fact he had sold other aliexpress knives.
Crappy thing is no refund until i can return it and as i am currently deployed that takes FOR-EV-ER. So much for my quest for a spyderco military.

Ebay doesnt like counterfeits. Open a case, they will begin a process that ends with a refund after you prove you have destroyed it

Edit: I strongly encourage anyone that knows they have a fake from an ebay purchase to open a case like this and not allow sellers to try to sell the fake to someone else.

Dream on. I used to report obvious counterfeits and ePrey would do nothing as I was not the "trademark owner." Follow the money.

I was under the impression that that was how they resolved issues of counterfeit goods. You open a case, then prove it's fake, then they request that you destroy it if they side with you. Then after it's destroyed, they refund you. Am I wrong?

I should destroy the knife?
Even if it's fake eBay wants you to send it back so you get a refund. Silly thing is they make you pay for the return shipping even if it's the other guy who is clearly wrong and not you.

At least that's what happened to me when some person tried to sell me gold plated brass coins instead of solid gold.
Luckily gold can't be faked well and its easy to determine if it's real by its density. Had to cut it it out of its display case though where many customers would have kept it in for protection.
The knives I see here however would be harder for me to spot. I used to get blades from eBay and got lucky but it seems to be harder and harder.

Forcing you to buy an obvious counterfeit before any action is hardly evidence that eBay doesn't "like counterfeits." ePrey likes counterfeits just fine so long as buyers are successfully scammed, and ePrey ignores third-party complaints. And even when the transaction is quashed, ePrey gets its fee. Follow the money.
