Spyderco Fakes & Knock Offs Info

I bought it while at work launching out a jet. I should have known from the black clip but when i asked he said someone else just put a different clip on it. When i got back to my room i took a closer look at the pics and could see the grind was off and the spyderco cpm s30v is to large. I had already paid at that point.

That sucks. Didn't realize the Military fakes were prevalent... I'll keep that in mind.

Taiwan has also long been known to possess much more precise manufacturing ability than most of mainland China, much thanks to the Japanese and their influence in Taiwan. Taiwan is also well known as making some of the most advanced carbon bicycles and cycling components in the world. This may change in the future, as things do, but it is worth noting presently. Taiwan, while politically a republic of China, is not the same country.

First off, Taiwan is not a Republic of China - it is a separate country - Taiwan, ROC. China is the People's Republic of China - completely different. Taiwan is a true republic, not communist in the least. Taiwan was not subject to Mao's cultural revolution that set the country back decades. China wants Taiwan back, but Taiwan likes their freedom. The United States vowed to protect their democracy but that's starting to look like an empty promise now. I doubt the US would go to war for Taiwan. We already learned our lessons in Korea and Vietnam. Imagine what China would do to us.

Secondly, I doubt that the "Japanese" influence has very little if anything to do with Taiwan's superior manufacturing capabilities. Chiang Kai-shek and the KMT party which consisted of the country's finest scientific minds and free-thinkers left the mainland after WWII to form another country so that they wouldn't be assimilated after the Chinese Civil War. China has no political power over Taiwan and to compare the two is unfair. Most of the Japanese moved out in the 50's or are enjoying their retirements. The Taiwanese are descendents of the greatest minds in China. That's why the quality of their manufacturing is superior, not because of the Japanese. Get your facts straight.

Hey, sorry if I offended enough to prompt you to reply here. Was not my intention. I appreciate the information.
Apparently I was told differently during my time spent in Taiwan. Or maybe it just depends on who you speak to, similar to history anywhere else in the world.
For being called Taiwan ROC, that last acronym is confusing then... ;)

The mainland is "The People's Republic of China"

The island is "The Republic of China."

This information from the respective governments.

Was there ever a LEGIT Para 1 produced with "Dinosaur" jimping (think CF Stretch Zdp189 type) on the thumbramp and no jimping whatsoever (smooth) on the finger choil?

Wow, Josh thanks a lot for the quick reply & link... :)

I would love to see a thread showing all the permutations of the Para 1 & CQI...I HAD NO IDEA THERE WERE AT LEAST 10 DIFFERENT VARIETIES...

Thanks again for teaching me something new brother! :D

it took me 1/2 to day to make it through this thread - great stuff. Too bad many of the images in older posts aren't hosted anymore and many of the links are dead.

Before joining BF I had done extensive research on the web about Spyderco fakes - I've learned a few more things from this thread (and from Les Garten's videos)

I've bought several Spyderco knives on ebay and have had good luck (knock on wood)

I was reading somewhere that you can also identify fakes by inspecting the Spyderco logo with a magnifying loupe (how the logo is etched). Apparently they are very distinctive (eg. Colorado vs Japan vs Taiwan)

A tale of two PM2s --

I posted this over in another thread, but thought I would share these pics here to see what people's opinions are. I have two PM2s. One is a black/satin and the other is a digicamo/black. I suspect that the black one is a fake and would like to see what others think. The knife looks really good, except that when you take it apart, you can see that the lock-side liner is laid out very differently from the digital camo one. The lock opening in the G10 is the same on the two knives, but the lock itself sits very differently in the cutout. Before I started reading about all of these counterfeits on BF, I assumed that it was a design change implemented by Spyderco at some point in the PM2 run. At another poster's suggestion, I weighed the two knives and the black/satin weighs in at 3.77oz. The digicamo/black weighs in at 3.83oz. The official weight for both is 3.9 oz on Spyderco's site.

Hi from Australia. I was hoping you super informed Spydie guys could help a girl out. I just received a Para 2 that I bought online. The seller seemed to be legit(has $1200- $1800 AUD dollar knives on his site- Stryders etc). The para was in a photo with his other 5 variations on the theme, and in that setting, looked legit. It was sold as new but without a box. Nothing about the seller rang alarm bells, so I went ahead with the deal. When it arrived I had already got nervy and researched what to look for in a fake, and here's what I found- 1. It had the correct number(3) of cut outs in the liners
2. The jimping seems angled (although not as aggressive as my camo version)
3. The lock cut out has smooth, curved edges, not sharp like the fakes
4. The lanyard ring is chamfered and smooth
5.The torx screws are not cheap star shaped knock-off
6. The printing is not off centre or obviously a different font, but slightly lighter
7.The pocket clip is near identical, although doesn't quite have the same turn down right at the end
So, why am I worried?Well,1. I bought this for the Green G10 handles, as a match to my sprint run Worker. When I compare the two handle materials, the Para2 has a more aggressive texture and feels slightly like....plastic. I have several G10 handle Spydies, and although there is some variation in models, this one just feels different
2. I noticed that the Spydie on the blade was closer to the hole than the others, and on comparison to my other P2 I found that this was because the hole is larger(I can get more of my finger through the hole of the new one)!!!
3. And this is the clincher- the steel is marked as S30V, and from all my research, the sprint run Green G10 P2 only came out with the CTS240P steel.
So there's my dilemma... This knife was not cheap for me to buy in Australia, by any means- about twice US prices, and the thought that I have invested that much in a fake is stressing me out!!!!
Does anybody know of a Green G10 Para2 in S30V? Do Spydie holes vary in size over the same model?
Shouts out to anyone who can help with information.
Cheers,
Aussiegal

aussiegal,

Green scales were only on the PM2 with CTS-204P or Elmax blades.

The First Gen Paramilitary was available in a D2/OD green G10 combination.

Cheers from Canada

Here are some photos that might help clarify the issue. Also I counted the jimping just now and there is one less jimp(is that the singular?)on the GREEN g10. The Camo P2 is genuine, I have had it for a while and it came from a trusted Aussie dealer...Thanks again

Thanks to some great detective work on Australian Blade Forum, I have got to the bottom of the situation. Seems I have been tricked by a dodgy dealer, who is known to other members in Aus'. Looks like I have a genuine Sprint Run G10 handle and he has swapped the blade out for a cheaper one. To what end I have no idea, but he is a repeat offender. Thank you for your help, Blade Forum members, you rock!!!!! :loyal:
