Spyderco Fakes & Knock Offs Info

I just got a Dragonfly today and I noticed the font on the tang is different from the font on my Delica's tang. Everything else seems okay other than the fact that the lockbar is slightly raised higher than the thumb ramp on my Dragonfly.

Does that mean it's fake?

You can tell a fake dragonfly in an instant. The fake feels like a cheap piece of junk. Just close your eyes and work the knife. You can tell a fake with your eyes closed. Don't worry about the fonts.

Search my name on youtube. I have Fake vs Real Dragonfly Video on there, side by side comparisons.

Also the only Dragonflys I have seen fake were label'd H1 steel.

I need to post another Dragonfly Video because I have some Black FRN fakes as well.

It's REALLY smooth and came extremely sharp so I guess it's real...

Honestly, it's so much better in terms of fit and finish than my Delica is that I'm wondering if it's my Delica that's a fake :o

The font just threw me for a loop since I've never seen a Dragonfly with this particular font on the tang, I don't think

I've never seen them clone a delica. The clones I've had all had terrible side to side play. Felt very rickety

Hello,
I noticed from several youtube videos that chinese Spyderco knockoffs are getting better and better, really hard to spot without a comparison with an original one, almost impossible (at least for me) just seeing some picture on the internet. Many videos tell what are the differences to look for in order to spot a fake, but I could not find any cutting performance and/or quality comparison yet. I think in the specific case of a knife replica this element is far more important than esthetic identity, cause (usually) we buy a knife to use it and not to put it in a showcase.
Thanks in advance for any reply.

I didn't do any side by side cut tests.

I've used some that I've had and they did well. Most of the steels that you'll get on a clone that you spend $15 or more on will be 440C, 8CR13MOV, or D2.

I think for someone who will buy a clone and keep and carry a clone instead of a REAL OEM knife, that the steel performance will be fine for them or for "most" other people as well. That person is not going to have a collection of all the Supersteels to compare to.

I bought a "knife" collection off the TV like 10 years ago. It was something where you got 8 or 10 knives for like $19.95. All of the knives were not much, some were immediate plastic handled throwaways that were dangerous to even use. One was really a well made all SS skeletonized Tanto bladed folder that was really well made. I was amazed. I still have it. It was at that time that I was kinda amazed at what may come out of China.

For a guy with only $15-20 to spend and needs a knife for work or his garage or just to pose with, you can get one hell of a knife that can serve you well from over there. That guy is not going to care or know much about different steels.

I'm going to do a Chris Reeves Sebenza video since I have finally decided that I'd like to have a CRK, I'll do a side by side tear down and comparison with Calipers and weights and all. But I expect that the clone with D2 steel will be a pretty good knife at 1/10 the cost. In the end I'll keep the CRK and the clone will move on.

The Southards I compared were really scary quality.

There was just a fake PPT on *bay that sold this morning for $110. I asked the seller to send me some different pics and they were really weird angles and not even in focus.

Ok thanks a lot Les-garten

Say a Chinese maker who copies Spydeis used the exact materials, and corrected all the design and cosmetic difference noted in so many post. And after close examination a Spydie afi concluded the knife was a spot on match in every detail.....would it be a Spyderco?

You can't be serious? Was it made by Spyderco? If not, then it isn't a Spyderco. Seems simple enough...

Ali express has a whole lot of counterfeits. Even the boxes are done well. Some of them are done so well I think even a knife expert could over look it. Kind of scary.

Just saw this on eBay, it was only a matter of time.

What if the Chinese factory who makes Chinese spydercos made more then spyderco ordered and sold the rest on their own?
