Spyderco Fakes & Knock Offs Info

What if the Chinese factory who makes Chinese spydercos made more then spyderco ordered and sold the rest on their own?

There are many ways in which such product could differ significantly from legitimate Spyderco product. Without Spyderco's official sanction, such "ghost" production is of unknown quality and reliability.

Compared with legitimate Spyderco product, will the ghost product ...

  • use all the same incoming materials and components? This will include blade steel, handle materials, screws, washers, lubricants, etc.

  • have all its incoming materials and components monitored and controlled using the same Quality Management System?

This compasses everything that is required to ensure the quality and reliability of procured raw materials and components, including
    • use/maintenance/calibration of measurement instruments
    • use/maintenance/calibration of inspection equipment
    • frequency/quantity/quality of control data collection
    • frequency/quality of control data analyses
    • frequency/quality of organizational response to control data analyses
  • have all its manufacturing operations monitored and controlled using the same Quality Management System?

This compasses everything that is required to ensure that individual manufacturing operations are run correctly, and to ensure their results are within specified requirements, including
    • set-up procedures for manufacturing equipment
    • maintenance of manufacturing equipment
    • qualification of manufacturing equipment (periodic, and after special events such as equipment malfunction, equipment maintenance, shift changes, etc.)
    • monitoring of manufacturing equipment inputs (i.e., process controls and adjustments), including
      - use/maintenance/calibration of measurement instruments and gauges
      - frequency/quantity/quality of process control data collection
      - frequency/quality of process control data analyses
      - frequency/quality of organizational response to process control data analyses
    • monitoring of manufacturing equipment outputs (i.e., results on work-in-process production units)
      - use/maintenance/calibration of measurement instruments and gauges
      - frequency/quantity/quality of process control data collection
      - frequency/quality of process control data analyses
      - frequency/quality of organizational response to process control data analyses
  • have all its final product characteristics monitored and controlled using the same Quality Management System?

This compasses everything that is required to ensure that the final product, which reflects interactions among individual manufacturing operations, meets all specified requirements for quality and reliability, including
    • set-up procedures for test/inspection equipment
    • maintenance of test/inspection equipment
    • validation of test/inspection equipment
    • calibration of test/inspection equipment
    • frequency/quantity/quality of test/inspection data collection
    • frequency/quality of test/inspection data analyses
    • frequency/quality of organizational response to test/inspection data analyses
If even one of these items is neglected, it introduces the opportunity for product to ship which doesn't meet Spyderco's requirements for quality and reliability. Such product may look like a Spyderco, but it won't perform like a Spyderco.

From a spyderco facebook group.

Looking for a tenacious , maybe even a customized one. I was happy as a pig in slop when I bought me a brad southard model earlier this week for my first spyderco!! Only to find out I paid $160 for a fake!!! Supprisingly it really isn't a bad knife, but lord knows what kind of steel it actually is. So needless to say I'm still looking to get my first spyderco only it will have to be a less expensive model since I'm out $160!

There is a southard on ebay now with box for $50 has to be a fake at the price as I don't even know the knife. Just checking the price is too good to be true.

I haven't read every page yet, just found this earlier.....But I picked this up from a guy and now I can't find his info.
So I am wondering if this may be fake?...I am almost certain it's the real deal, but I am possibly gonna trade it for something
I want so I wanna make sure it's real before I pass it on to someone else.
I took a few pics earlier, will post a couple....If there are certain ones I can take to show whether it is real,or not....Let me know?
I'll take more If I don't have....One thing really impresses me is the steel....It looks like steel ive seen on something before....
I think it's similar to BM steel as to the grainy look......I've seen this look on something that was good quality I know.....
I was told the scales were aftermarket, but can't find the sellers info to ask who he got them from?
Thanks for any input.....JD

I believe that knife is a $58 Chinese Southard

I have videos up on youtube showing the fake vs real side by side.

I "believe" this guy most likely knew he was selling a fake and came up with the scale story. If he had the box, why wouldn't he have the original scales?

The Titanium Fakes are really well made by the way.

I'll bet if you watch my video and compare to your knife you'll figure it out.

That plastic wrapper in there looks characteristic of a fake as well.

you may be right.....i don't have alot into trade, but if i'd had to buy what i traded i would....
i remember his story as kept the scales for future pattern, but who knows......
im stuck with it now, even though i'll never use it......it'll just go in my display as is...Or I may dye
the scales or try get another set for it..I had it traded already, but Im sure he's not gonna want a
counterfeit....Oh well....The steel looks to be of quality anyway,jd

Is there a way to test the knife to see what kind of steel was used? I doubt anybody can tell just by looking.

i have no clue....im sure someone here can tell you a yes,or no.......but as for looking at steel and telling it's quality.....i think
there is ways of telling if steel is not of quality just by looking at it.....if you look at that one picture, don't you agree the steel looks
like good steel?...maybe a dumb question,but i just had to ask it,jd

The one I bought for my video was D2 according to the seller.

Those clones are quality knives and IMO handling a few of them are better flippers than my two real Southards

Oh yeah they get flipped alright haha.

It looks to be a stone washed type finish, and no way I know to tell anything beyond that. One thing you could do is find someone local to you that offers hardness testing. If it's on par with what the real knife is advertised at, there is a good chance it's real. A lesser steel won't be able to achieve the same Rockwell hardness.

You know, like investors flip houses. Well, these counterfeits get flipped for a profit alright.

Ahhh, now I get it.

I have bought a number of the clones to review side by side against the real deal. I have not sold or traded one of them. I still have 2 of them(The Hinderers), don't carry them, the rest were given away to kids and adults who couldn't afford to purchase a "real" knife.

I chose Spydercos because I like them, and I can afford them. In the future I may buy a Chris Reeve, and at that point I would do a side by side with a clone. Wouldn't be able to resist that.

I hope the stipulation was made that these knives are clones, and not to be sold on, or even given away as real ones. I see a dangerous possibility of them being put back into circulation as real.
I would like to see all clones found stamped with deeply right on the blade with the letters FAKE.

I know the folks I gave them to.

well,im just gonna keep mine.....it's a nice knife......the steel isn't stonewashed,but i have
seen other steel with that look....some of my camillus knives, and benchmade knives look similar...
sorta like millions of molicules crunched together in a smooth press.....my mini grip has same
look,just not as coarse......my 67 looked similar as well.....probably my 51 too,but hadn't had
it out lately.....
have you saw a guide to the spyders from diffrent countries?...someone sent me a guide of spyders
printed in diff countries have a diff design......the spyder on my southard has the colorado style
texture,so i guess it's not real....

To JDracing, the only dumb question is a question not asked, wisdim is a part of questioning.regards,Rob.

Need some assistance please.

After having not one but 2 Spydercos 'walk off' a number of years back, I grow tired of carrying cheapies. That said, it seems as if there are more fake Para Military 2's running around versus the real ones. Please try and help a fellow Spyderco lover keep from getting ripped

This box looks funny to me. Any comments would be appreciated.
