Spyderco HAP40 Thread

The maker says the hardness is Rc 63-64.

sal

The steel is really quite phenomenal Sal. I just finished some rope cutting with the Delica head to head with m4. The hap40 showed slightly better edge retention, but the most notable thing is that after the testing I touched up the microbevel of the Delica on the medium SM rods. Four (count em, 4) passes per side had the edge back to where it would firmly lock onto beard hair on contact. The m4 took 16 passes to reach the same level of sharpness. Really phenomenal stuff. Thank you !

Not a HT issue just a steel at max hardness used improperly, Kohetsu runs these at 65-66. That Kitchen knife is also half the thickness of our delicas at the edge so it doesn't take much side loading to chip them out.

Sal, thanks for the numbers  I was guessing mine was around 62ish, glad to see my guess was close. I love these high hardness steels :D

I see a lot of people are touching theirs up on a Sharpmaker at 20 degrees. Is anyone running this steeper at say, 15 dps? If so, how's it holding up? 15 used to be where I liked to keep M4 when I had some and seemed to hold up very well.

Also, I wonder what the chances would be of replacing the ZDP Delica with HAP40 as the high end standard production option. I'd be all for it as I didn't have a great experience with ZDP. I haven't tried HAP40 yet although tempted, but seeing reports from some heavy users and sharpeners have me sold that it lives up to the hype. Pure speculation, but I might would assume a standard production high end Delica in HAP40 would sell better than the ZDP. Never seen anything but high praise for HAP40 and mixed reviews with ZDP, again I personally didn't like it. With the demand for this steel, we've just gotta have a regular production in one of the models, right? [emoji120]

Full production HAP40?

I think we should all stop for a moment and pray to the knife gods for this to happen.

I don't own a Stretch, and somehow this steel has me leaning towards wanting one, plus have heard the Stretch is one of the all-time greats. The HAP40 knives seem to be coming in at around the same price as the ZDP, so maybe it's not something that's completely impossible to consider. Also, maybe it'd be even a little cheaper in standard production since they'd be purchasing a much higher volume of steel. I don't claim to be an economist or anything so just wild guesses here.

Yup, I too will be buying my first Stretch because of this steel.

The Stretch is awesome, only model I have more than two of. With the HAP40, it will make five, all different versions.

Noticed today as sharpening the patina on the edge makes for a great guide. No need to resort to felt pens etc. You can see what each pass is doing.

Ah yes. One of the beauties of a non-stainless blade is the built in sharpie. Works great, especially with Super Blue since it stains dark and fast.

I too am eager to pick up the Stretch. I was hoping it would drop soon. I picked up a Bradley 2 today so now I am hoping it doesn't drop for another month or so. ;) I guess the poor debit card is ready either way.

I am the same way with the Endura as you guys are with the Stretch in that I never was turned on by the Endura until the Hap40. Needless to say I will be purchasing at least one if not two more but in VG-10. The colors are awesome and that burnt orange is a TOTAL win. Rock on Spyderco. Now lets get a Manix LW in burnt orange.
