Spyderco Manix 2 and Benchmade Griptillian - Next 2 test knives

I believe you - but the question wasn't crazy. :) I had the same question. I replayed those sections a few times before deciding my first impression watching them was probably wrong.

I actually hit the Lawman harder durning the spine whacks than both the Benchmade and the Manix. ;)

Then you don't understand what folders are for.

They are for whatever the owner needs them for.

Why is a fixed blade not an option? Want bulletproof, that's it. Yes it's too much to dream and hope that a knife designed to fold in half will be as strong as a fixed blade.

Did I say I expected them to be as strong as a fixed blade? I just a folder that can handle "hard use" but what others say is gross abuse.

They don't sell the Manix 2 as bullet proof, nor do they sell the Grip as a replacement for the fixed grip.

Did I say anything specifically that pointed out the manix? I was just speaking about folders in general.

I also pried harder with the Lawman than the other 2 as it turned out, the other 2 felt like they were going to snap so I backed off on them.

I also snapped out the Lawman torquing the blade.

The Lawman bit deeper in the 2x4 and log than the other 2 so I was stressing the blade more when prying.

So what ever you were thinking it really was the opposite. ;)

Dammit,Ankerson :D!Someone please tell me quick my beloved Manix 2 is as much of a hard use folder as my new CS Lawman or I'll fall into a depression :grumpy: ))
I know that the Lawman is no Flawman :p....but come on the bb-lock looks so promising, how can it fail so easily.Must have been the loose pivot .

It really is a good knife.

Just don't pry with it and you will be good to go.

I also think putting some loc-tight on the screws might help it a lot.

Sure. And if you find yourself in a situation where you have to take your folder, spine whack it, and baton through a couple of 2x4's then you have seriously screwed up. :)

Your definition of hard use is different then mine (and the majority of people). If your definition of "hard use" involves repeated spine whacks and batoning then you shouldn't be using a folding knife.

Folders are pre-broken fixed blades. They are not designed to handle the same stresses. I thought this would have been clear by now. I'm not specifically singling out the Manix (as I believe something might have been wrong with it to begin with, it wasn't even really abused), I'm pointing out folders in general.

But if my folder can take it, then I wouldn't have a problem, would I?

Not at all. But if my folder can take repeated spine whacks and battoning then I am doubly sure it can handle what I plan to use it for.

It is quite clear but I know that we are getting closer to that ideal time when state of the art can make a folder as strong as a fixed blade. And if there were not people like me who are the market for "hard use" knives, then there would be no knives marketed as such and no technological advancements like the tri-ad.

Folders can't take it. By design they are already broken. I don't know why you fail to understand that.

Let me repeat:
Folders can't take it. By design they are already broken. I don't know why you fail to understand that.

Oh, one more time!
Folders can't take it. By design they are already broken. I don't know why you fail to understand that.

Folders are not fixed blades. Why would you ever believe they they could be made as strong as one? Show me a folder that can take a 90* bend. Come on, do it. :)

At present folders can't be as strong as fixed blades, but are you clairvoyant that you can foresee what the future will bring? Can't you understand that when I say future, I don't mean the present time? And besides what is it to you that I have faith in the ingenuity of people to come up with new and better solutions? Why does it hurt you so bad that i want a strong and robust folder?

What are you talking about future? We're talking about the here and now.

Besides as I have already stated multiple times: Folders are pre-broken fixed blades. Are you so naive as to believe that you can make it as strong as what it once was?

Ok let me put it this way.

I want a folder as strong as the CS AL proved to be. This is present, now, this point in time.

Ok, now my dreams and hopes(including world peace of course)

Developments in technology that will exceed the strength of the tri-ad.

Jim, I was wondering before you did you're test, did you make sure that all parts were sufficently tight and has not horizontal blade play. In your test of the Manix 2, I was bothered that you did not stop to tighten the blade pivot or other fasteners, that might of needed tightening. For the amount of horizontal blade was alarming.

For a person who has taken their Manix 2 apart, for what I can remember the G-10 scale are what keeps the BB cage lined up and centered between the steel liners.Chances are the blade was not perfectly centered but askewed a bit and instead of transfering forces to the BB,they were partially directed to the vulnerable plastic cage. Then there's the issue of the acrylic looking rod for the coil spring that goes through the BB cage which could push the lock to either side of the blade tang.

Here are my other concerns with the Manix 2
-thinly walled torx screw heads (manage to break a blade pivot screw by trying to tighten the blade to where it would not move, extremely easily.)
-how all the screws having such a coarse tread instead of fine

What do you mean "comprende?" You have now (finally) stated what you really want. Not what you inferred earlier which was a fixed blade that folds. :)

They are tested as they come in the box.

I didn't tighten any screws on any of the knives before testing.

This was what I said earlier. Maybe you just didn't understand.

Come on, you can read the conversation just as well as I can. :)

Or at least I hope so. You said you want to be able to grossly abuse your folders. That's fine. You're can want whatever. I said that you don't understand what folders are for. I stand by that statement.

You called the video test gross abuse. The lawman survived it. Singularity said he wants his folders to survive what you call gross abuse. I'm not sure why so many posts were spent on this.

If you use a folding knife with a lock, and you don't want it to be made a best it can not to fold on you, maybe you should rethink things.

Some people don't even need a locking blade.
Others want top quality locks.
Others except mediocrity.

Your beloved Spyderco failed a hard use test. Get over it.
