Understood. I still think people don't take into account that we have had a trying couple of years. Everyone was shut down for a bit, Spyderco I'm sure had people out, which reduced staff, which slowed production by no fault of their own. Being able to get the raw materials to be able to make the knives was a burden I'm sure. Also, being that exclusive orders are done so far in advance they couldn't have foreseen there was going to be a worldwide pandemic that would throw everything out of whack. Otherwise, we probably wouldn't be without standard models.

I'm just trying to get people to look at the bigger picture and see that circumstances were out of Spyderco's control. I understand there were a LOT of exclusives lately, which is why Sal and Co are putting a hold on new orders and working on standard models to get caught up. They're doing what they can to get stock back in dealers hands, which is why I think the disappointment is not warranted and why I urged patience. I'm sure Sal isn't any happier about it than we are.
I don't disagree with most of what you are saying here. I still maintain that Spyderco dug their own hole, albeit unintentionally by committing to all of these exclusives. Many popular companies do not seem to be experiencing the same issues. The dealer exclusives angle just wasn't the best business choice, at least to me.

Regardless, I am not abandoning Spyderco. I do really like the Stretch XL, and if they offer it in K390 or even SPY37, I'll buy one.

Totally off subject but just had to add my favorite El Arroyo sign. It occasionally applies to one or two forum members….

And now, back to the thread.

Maybe the custom collaborations carry a hefty price due to the fact they have to pay royalties to the designer. Iirc the designers sometimes "earns" the right to use a Spyderco hole on their customs. I know we are grumpy frustrated men. Those old Italian farmers who drove Lamborghini tractors where bitter as well when the factory decided to build sportcars as well.

At this rate we will see $1000+ MSRP Spyderco knives in three to four years.

I think allegedly scarce production capacity would be better used making new batches of Sage 2.

"It's too expensive!"

Thankfully, there are always other knives out there for whatever your budget is. I mean, that's life, right? What you want, and what you're willing to pay, aren't always going to meet, and it's not the company's problem if you can't afford it, or don't see the value in the price they're charging. I remember when they brought out the Paysan. I held one at BLADE and wondered what all the fuss was about, and man, I sure wasn't paying what the dealers were asking for one.... however, fast forward to today where they routinely sell for more than they cost new on secondary because they've been discontinued, to my understanding. Guess they were worth that price, after all. Now, I don't know anything about this Stovepipe, and I'm not the target market, but these will probably sell at their asking price. Plenty of Spyderco collectors out there. Not to worry, they still make cheap knives to meet lesser budgets. 🤷‍♂️

It's possible. But if Spyderco is selling $1,000 knives, my guess is that bread will be $6-$10 a loaf, and gas will be $8-$12/gallon, and it will be more a function of inflation than profits or exotic materials/designs.

Not for me, I do not like pocket cleavers to begin with.
That does seem like a steep price. At least it is something different !
I believe a 100$ price drop would be a good idea.
