Spyderco Stovepipe $420?????

I was wondering, because I jumped into Spyderco ready to buy a Military... no go. Police? No go. Civilian? Just sold out. I lucked out and got a Paramilitary2 in S45VN, which is a great worker, as well as a waved Matriarch 2, and at least the PM2 is pretty available for professionals to use, as well as the rescue tools which are great imo with the serrated blades except for the "tip", which is plain edge. But, I don't really know what I am talking about, truly, I know there are a lot of "original" models that are pretty unavailable and way too many speed runs. I imagine this isn't great for our professionals.

I was knocking around the idea of a Centofante 3 slicer.

It does suck if the direction they are going in is purely like this, with these weirdo cleaver knives every company is releasing and the flash batches. Out of curiosity, since you are an old school Spyderco buyer, what was the original steel used in the Police and things like that?
You can go here and see all the info, steel, release dates, and a lot more.

Getting mad at spyderco because they have a production schedule to follow that had a LOT of exclusives in it, along with covid slowing things down, and supply problems... And those exclusives were ordered 2 years out. They can't just say "hey we can't do them, we have to work on standard production knives..." because they are contractually obligated. They have stopped taking orders for exclusives for the foreseeable future because they want to catch up on standard knives though, so just be patient and they'll catch up.

They are also expanding, so once that gets up and running more knives should flow.

They make a ton of different knives in lots of price points... And Sal is an amazing human being. Sorry, but I dont understand the anger. Sure the stovepipe is not everyone's cup of tea, but it's hardly the only folder they're selling. Why get so bent out of shape about it? I'm sure they have something that will appeal to almost everyone. I don't even like the stovepipe... But I don't care if someone else does.

Whatever though.

I quit Spyderco when their basic Endura hit $100 price tag. I like some of their blades. But they are getting a bit too uppity and greedy.
(I still buy em used on occasion)

18:56; oh it's hideous, it will be in stock forever!

Thanks for posting. I actually kinda like the design myself and it’s much smaller than I thought it would be.

On to bigger topics, NO lockbar insert either on a $420 titanium knife????? Someone please help me out here, are they carberizing the lock bar bc he didn’t mention that. I don’t know what he meant by custom clip either, it just looks like a plain titanium clip? Once again, I LOVE Spyderco, I just think $420 is just unexplainable for what you’re getting and what you’re NOT getting for this specific model. $250 and I’m in all day. This thread took a hard right turn towards crap on Spyderco. I think they’re a great knife company that makes great knives in many if not all price ranges. What my original post was wanting to discuss was the $420 price tag for this specific model and if that made sense. I really don’t mind all the other general opinions, just not exactly how the thread started. No big deal though.

What’s your source on this?

I‘m not calling you out. I’m just curious (and hopeful).

Sal posted that either here or on their site. All the exclusives that are showing up are commitments that have been in the pipe a few years.

So clearly in a few years time everyone will be complaining there are no exclusives.

Yes, Sal himself said this. I believe it was on spydercos own forum, or the forum here. That's the really great thing about spyderco. You can actually talk to the man himself.

Not bashing Sal at all. Voted for him as the most influential knife maker. And i probably keep buying Spyderco knives but the catalogs are filled with knives i already have ( but in a new and improved super steel i will never use in any way or form to it's full potential) or knives that almost cost my montly rent.
Let me be a grumpy old man ( according to wife and kids) boomer they called me. But the actual knife is too expensive.

Getting mad at spyderco...

I don't think anybody is mad at Spyderco. At least not in this thread. What you are seeing is a bit of disappointment regarding the new releases we have been seeing for the past year or so. Also, some valid criticism of the pricing and design choices for the only entirely new model announced, the Stovepipe.

Trust me, not many people here have owned more different Spydercos than me or appreciate Sal like I do. That doesn't mean I won't comment if I don't care for the direction the company takes. I feel like the hyper focus on exclusives and variants of existing models has soured the experience for a lot of Spyderco customers that don't focus on collecting like myself. The focus on dealer exclusives is not a valid excuse, it's actually the reason I've become critical in the first place.

Understood. I still think people don't take into account that we have had a trying couple of years. Everyone was shut down for a bit, Spyderco I'm sure had people out, which reduced staff, which slowed production by no fault of their own. Being able to get the raw materials to be able to make the knives was a burden I'm sure. Also, being that exclusive orders are done so far in advance they couldn't have foreseen there was going to be a worldwide pandemic that would throw everything out of whack. Otherwise, we probably wouldn't be without standard models.

I'm just trying to get people to look at the bigger picture and see that circumstances were out of Spyderco's control. I understand there were a LOT of exclusives lately, which is why Sal and Co are putting a hold on new orders and working on standard models to get caught up. They're doing what they can to get stock back in dealers hands, which is why I think the disappointment is not warranted and why I urged patience. I'm sure Sal isn't any happier about it than we are.

Modeled after the cleaver in Gangs of New York of Bill the Butcher and named for his hat, but yeah, unfortunate coincidence
For that price it should come with a hat! Spyderco really do go long on the prices whenever they work with designers making anything that looks slightly different from their standard fare. It's just how they roll. People talk about the Butterfly tax when they buy Benchmade, but then walk straight into the Spyder's web for these collector market knives.

As I mentioned in the Spyderco Forum, the Stovepipe looks a lot better in the Shot Show video than in the pics they've posted of it on the company's website but it's still not something that I'd want to buy, not even at the OpFocus price of $300.

If it ends up a $1k knife down the road, oh well. I buy knives that I "like," not knives that I think will make me $.

Besides, I already have a few other knives in my collection that have also reached that level. So, I won't feel "bad" about it, if that happens.

LOL! ;)

I wanted to bring up a different point of view from yours and state some disagreements. But man. It's all good. I am too old and too tired of the last few years to debate. I see your side and I don't completely disagree or agree. But screw it. I just wish you and your family a happy 2022 and to stay safe.
I will just agree to disagree.
