Spyderco vs Benhcmade

The Sharpmaker comes with an instructional pamphlet and a video. It's pretty easy to use if you follow the instructions carefully. Besides, using it will literally give you a feel for what sharpening is.

When you're ready to try sharpening free-hand, just turn the Sharpmaker base over, lay two rods in the grooves provided, and use the system as a benchstone -- no need to buy any further equipment.

You can also sharpen scissors and nailclippers and potato peelers with it.

It is one of the few systems that handles serrated and recurved blades as easily as straight-edged.

Always better to build someone up than tear them down. I'm so happy to be here and be able to learn new stuff.

The Calypso Jr. is a great cutter and the Sharpmaker is an easy and effective way to keep it that way. In the video, Sal even shows how to remove the burr raised during sharpening ;)

I hear ya vinny! Unfortunately the sharpmaker only comes with the tape but the instruction pamphlet is pretty thorough and the sharpening concept is quite intuitive. Just go slow until you get the technique down, then you can speed things up and make better time. The people here are a GREAT resource if you have any questions about it. Use them and respect them and you'll learn a huge amount (I know I have).
 
regarding vinny77 and his Spyderco with it's mysterious burr...

here is what vinny recommends to a fellow forumite on the Ipod forums: "[font=Verdana,Arial,Helvetica]well best buy doesent ahve them yet and the anser is still no. Your ipod is a 40gb 3g so it is more than $300 so you have the Best buy PSP which is a service plan and not the PRP which is a replacement. Best buy will take your ipod in and look at it for about 20 days, If they connot fix a Problem with ur Pod then you will get whatever is the equal value. Sicce I think your ipod was $500 when you got it you will be able to get the $500 photo ipod becosue then if they agve you a 40gb 4g you would have lost $100. There is a chance the Best buy will have some 3G 40gb in stock in the back so watch out for this. You need to have a unresolvable problem for them to give you a new one. My suggestion is Open the iPod carefully so it is not detectable and unplug or break somthing that is unoticable. You have a good chance in getting by with this"

if you guys really want to waste your time on vinny77 here, i guess that's up to you. i'm not trying to stir the pot, but i don't like to see BFC members waste their time on someone who is obviously trolling. he's been banned from 3 forums that i can see and seems to drive everyone nuts wherever he goes. his Spyderco issue seemed fishy AT BEST, and after what i've read elsewhere, i'm of the firm belief that he damaged his knife on his own.

IMO, our time could be better spent. moderators, if my post is out of line, i will edit it.

Hi All-

Vinny, both companies make excellent knives within their respective pricepoints. I currently own examples of each...not to mention Busse and Microtech. Both brands will require periodic maintenance to ensure they perform at their best. This includes sharpening, cleaning, polishing, and lubrication.

As an aside, it would be a big help to your fellow forumites if you composed your messages in MS Word and then pasted to the thread after a spelling and grammar check. Improved clarity would allow us to give you superior guidance with regard to your future knife purchases.

There are BM fans and Spyderco fans here. Usually, BM fans agree that Spyderco makes some good knives, while Spyderco fans also admit that BM makes great knives. :) I think this sais a lot about the above mentioned products.

Strenght wise, I haven't put any of my folders through the real stress tests the hardcore members do. My Endura, Delica and Native III were much sturdier than my Griptilian, which I have since gotten rid of, for the work I did

Sharpness out of the box, of all of the new Spydercos I have bought, the only problem I had with sharpness was my Meerkat, I bought the Griptilian used, and it was still razor sharp.

Lasting factor hasn't really come into play yet

I really like the design of the Spydercos like the Endura and Delica, they look really neat, the Native III's look serves it's purpose.

I'm getting ready to send my used Delica back to Spyderco for warranty service, I'll post what happens with that.

Overall, I don't have my Griptilian anymore, but I have about 12 Spydercos! You decide! :D

He called you jackass because you are acting like one, then you call him a "gook" because he's asian... Childish, grow up man. It's a lot of fun around here when you act your age, you could learn so much from the nice people around here. I know I have and I would hate to lose that.

Nobody wants to ban anybody. That is not what we are about. We would rather not have to ban anyone.

Hint - there are types of behavior that we do not tolerate and we are giving you another chance. That is a very strong hint.
