masa, where can I get hold of a 681? Usually my source for SRM, Enlan, Navy etc. is Exduct but I don't think they have them for sale...

This is some serious sharpening. Very nicely done. How did you manage to do it? Looks very thin, can the steel support the thinness without chipping?

Hi, I got in from china. It should not be hard to get but I am not sure where you can.

Masa,

Thank you!

It took about 2 weeks or so because I only did that in spare time (after work, weekend), on 320, 400, 1000 grit stones, plus 1000 grit sandpaper and metal polish on non corrugated cardboard. Based on approx eyesight, 20-30 inclusive, so it's thin. Initially I only thinned down the bevel, but it turned out not symmetrical. Either the blade grind from factory or my hand cannot create the same angle for left & right side To hide that, I decided to fully convex it, following Murray Carter method. Found out the FFG is not really flat!

The edge holds up well for my daily use: pizza on the box, some bread on proper cutting board, instant coffee package, paper. So far, to keep it sharp I strop it daily on the same cardboard.

I haven't tried any wood carving, during which the lateral stress might chip the blade. The chip there is the result of dropping the knife on ceramic tile (textured, not smooth). From this incident, I think the edge will not chip on wood easily, the damage from dropping is not as bad as I expected.

Will test some bamboo or light pine chopstick and report back ...

Techno, are you looking for a 681 or a 631? Exduct has the 631 that's pictured above. Chris, that is one heck of an edge, im taking that as a challenge.

CtA,

Thank you! I'm flattered, but it's nothing compared to what some others can do here ... Like Obsessed with Edge, Heavy Handed, Unit, UnknownVT, Fulloflead, Lagrangian, to name few that have shared their knowledge around here. Those are the masters!

I think your used EL01 edge is about the same :D

Chris, your pics inspired me to dig up some 1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper, that along with my strop got me to this:

Ive spent so much time with this on my stones its starting to get lighter... and shorter.
Have you considered any scale mods? i am thinking about trying some liners, something thin enough that I can use the original screws.

CtA,

It looks great! With the right lighting and angle, the Navy still has scratches from sharpening visible too, lol! :D
It also gets lighter but only a bit shorter :)
Thanks for compliment, but am still learning, not like masters here (too many to mention) that have shared their knowlege and tips!
I have been thinking about scale mods, but having limited time & tools, not in near future ..
Let's just strive to do better ...;)

Vortex,

Is the sandpaper 240 grit? To roughen it up?

Masa,

Tested the edge on disposable chopstick (light wood), it degraded very fast. Some rolling & a bit of chipping could be seen with naked eyes under good lighting. So I took it to 1000 grit sandpaper, made few passes at 40 degree inclusive & some stropping, it came out still sharp enough to push cut newspaper but strong enough for the chopstick.

I guess only Ankerson's Endura 4 ZDP189 can have 20 degree inclusive and still holds up well for EDC ;)

The el04 micarta is one of my favorites. A pity I cannot see blogs. I now know how the spring is like. I didn't dare to open it in case it flies out and I cannot fix it.

Chris, thanks for the test. I hope its the light wooden chopsticks you tested on and not the harder bamboo variety.

I was thinking of replacing the blade of the knife to a steel from a saw blade or file but this would require patience and skill especially on a folder.

Yes it is. The micarta scales of the EL04 have small machined grooves but the surface of them is shiny. After rubbing them with sandpaper they got a pleasent mat look.

Removing the omega springs is quite easy and simple, but I can't figure out how to remove the knobs from the axle.

Vortex,

Saw the one posted on EDC thread, was that before or after sandpaper treatment?

Masa,

It's the soft wood chopstick. The micro is about 30-35 inclusive, and that's good enough for my use now. The edge will flex a bit when used on wood, but no chip. I think at 40 it will do great, but am too lazy to do right now. My daily use rarely need that ;)

The photo was taken after the treatment.

Right! :)
You can hardly see any difference based on the pics but trust me it feels much better in the hand.

Chris,
How did you remove the thumbstuds of your EL02? Did you use pliers to unscrew them?

Yes, I used pliers. It's hard and damaged a bit of the studs. Since then I use only hands and have to tighten them from time to time, but it's easy when touch up is needed.

Looking at the height, the studs in place when sharpening will result in around 30-35 inclusive, which means my angle must be shallower than that ;)
