Steel Junky's - need opinions

Hi Mathew,

There will be some type of "sign-up". We would like them all spoken for before they're finished.

Whether or not this sign-up guaranteed a piece of each run is still in question, opinions?

We'll start hunting steel next week. I imagine 60 - 90 days to move the run through processing.

My name will be on the sign up sheet. Whether I would want one knife or one of each depends mostly on the design settled on. No matter, I'll be wanting the first blade at least, 52100 or m4 just sound to good to pass up!

What kind of price point are you looking at, on average? That could make a difference for me as well.

Thanks for doing this, Mr. Glesser.

Thanks for answering my questions Sal !

I was just thinking that if we all bought the first one and the idea really took off. I think it would be unfair for us to have to miss out on the 2nd or 3rd in the series . Just because people caught onto the idea late or decided that they would stock up so to speak just for the investment value . Basically just valuing customer loyaltyi guess you would call it .

I know i`d hate to miss out on one because Joe Bloggs in US decided to buy 15 of Number 2 cause he thought that he`d make a quid down the line .

Just my opinion and i`d appreciate any feedback or opinions .

Cheers Mate !

Sal:

For us who live abroad; would it be possible to reserve via a US dealer or have the knife sent to a US dealer from SFO?

UPS to Norway would make this a very expensive knife for me compared to other Spydercos;)

Sverre

PS! Thanks for the H1 fixed blades, going to get some for myself and some for sailing and diving friends:D

I'd certainly like to see some sort of subscription option, just because it's not always possible to haunt the boards watching for a sign up and I hate the idea of missing one if they get really popular. I'd guess that increasing the run size at a late date might be difficult with some of the long lead time steels. If folks want to stock up, maybe they could buy multiple subscriptions. I'd be willing to put a CC# on file at Spyderco and just have one of each sent as they're ready, for example.

I know that some opt-out marketing schemes have gotten a bad name, but a sticky sign-up with an opt-out would also be easy for me.

I pretty much agree with what gaj wrote - a subscription commitment with a cc on file. That subscription would commit Spyderco to provide one issue of these project knives to me, as they are announced. Without exception.

What I don't want to happen:
I don't want to miss an issued knife because someone else ordered 20 each.

If they are really priced low enough and come as plain knife blanks and unmarked will they really become a collectable? I’d hope they wouldn’t and would remain a user grade knife. Regardless I’m going to use mine as a beater.

I'd be in for any one with a hardness 62+. Most all of the stuff on the market is high 50s to 60-61 already.

+1 for the subscription idea....I would hate to get one or two and be out of luck on the others. Maybe a subscription with an opt out as was previously stated.

Honestly, I would like to see these done in 440C, VG10, and N690. It seems that N690 is often compared to VG10, but I also see it compared to 440C on the regular basis. VG10 is my favorite stainless, and 440C seems to be having a major resurgence as of late. I've personally never had a problem with 440C. I think it is a great steel that has developed kind of an 'average' reputation due to so many crap-knife companies using it (and I'm sure low quality steel and tempering has a lot to do with that). I've never used N690, but I've heard nothing but good things about it. I think it would be very cool to see these steels compared on a level playing field, and we all know that Spyderco doesn't cut corners on stuff.

Where do I subscribe? What sort of target price are we looking at? $~20 to $~40 at my door makes this a definite yes! I would be interested in multiples of some blade steels.

Prototype came out good. I'll try to post pics in the next few days.

Time to choose and order steel.

Sal - any chance you could have someone take a picture?

...Or could you put it in the display case at the SFO? I'm sure one of us Colorado people would be willing to take the picture for you. ;)

Sal you could always just send it to me and I'd take a pic for you. Heck I'd even scan it also. :)

Here are the pics...

These are blanks. If you guys want to mod the profiles and or handles that is just what you should do. That is kind of what these are being made for.
