Steel Junky's - need opinions

Are you thinking it will come with sheath optional? This would make sense to keep cost down, and some folks might only want one sheath. Though an inexpensive sheath makes storage easier.

We're not planning a sheath. Sheaths would be arranged with aftermarket makers. The makers listed are skilled. We'll ship the blades in cardboard.

All the knives will be the same so once each makers designs a sheath, it will work for any of the steel mules.

True, but you're a practical kind of guy - therefore, it's implied. At least, in my simplistic world.... :D

I agree, no tactical, practical or not...

This is definitely something I'd be interested in! From the sound of of it, the blade shape would be similar to the SWICK. As some of you may remember, I loved that knife (and still do), and put through the paces.

Wow, how id I miss this thread!

You have my full support!

I guess you may try to keep it simple because of coast issue.

I think modular design with simplified sceletonized blade and optional scales being separated and separately sold may be good idea. I saw BM now selling optional scales for Rukus. For this project it will be excellent.

Blade can be just rectangular with straight edge if this make grinding simplier and without too much finish - japanese practice this and it works.

However if you just will produce Military blades only as it is today, with different steel or finnish I'll be most happy to exchang. As well as scales - look - BM start selling scales for Rukus.

Thanks, Vassili.

Sal,
Thanks for turning me on to this thread! I was the guy giving you a hard time on Friday about my new ATR not having your mark on it. Although I'm not a steel junky yet, this project may well be the crossover drug that puts me there. I'm actually more interested in trying my hand at making scales right now.

Thanks again,

Ian

sounds like a great idea. Id definatly be interested. Im interested in any of the exotic steells=)

I just found this thread, and I think that this is an excellent idea. Count me in. I would like to see cpm M4 first, then 3V, then 52100. Either of the blade shapes mentioned would be more than fine by me. I hope that the handle shape on the mules would fit a fairly broad size spectrum (I love all my Spydercos, but some of them are just too small for my mitts) something on the order of the full size manix handle. I would have to see the final price of course, but I am pretty sure that I would be in for a minimum of one of each steel. Maybe this could be put together as a subscription "knife of the quarter" club or some such. I could care less if it came sharpened or not...I can see both sides of that argument. Optimal edge bevels for each steel would probably be different so most of us "steel nuts" will probably be changing whatever edge bevel comes on the knives anyway. Yet another great idea from a great company.

Prototype came out good. I'll try to post pics in the next few days.

Time to choose and order steel.

My current leaning is 52100. I was leaning towards M4, but CPM-M4 has some real grinding problems and some critical heat treats. My thinking is to use sometjhing really basic to test the program without adding "glitch" producing problems.

I was thinking a basic heat treat to an optimum hardness.

When I do an M4 run, I'd like to solicit Gayle Bradley and Warren Osbourne for their tricks. They know M4.

Then we could do a 52100 run with a mar quench. Ed Schempp has lined up a heat treater with the equipment and skill to do a good mar quench on 52100. Bob Kramer. Another Junky's junky, and excellent knife maker.

If this works out, it could be fun and there are quite a few steels to play with.

Cliff, if this model would work for your testing, how many pieces would I have to set aside and anneal, or what specific hardnesses would you need?

thoughts?

I can't wait....52100 will be a good one any way you slice it....Hope to see pricing and a sign up sheet soon.

This should be fun. Very hard 52100 sounds like a very good choice to start with.

I'm not sure the good points on marquenched 52100 will show up on a lil leafy mule blade (as opposed to a Schempp camp knife), but near fully hardened 52100 sounds like lots of fun.

The other thought is could Spyderco get a contract with Warren Osborne? I love his designs, but would rather buy them from Spyderco instead of that other place like I used to.
