Steel Junky's - need opinions

I thought Sal said he wanted to use steel from a company he already uses here in the states, not necessarily a steel he is currently useing. O7 is a great choice I hadn't thought of. I do think M4 is also a very good choice for the first one with it starting to become more popular. Maybe also that chipper steel A7?, I think that is what it is.

Chipper steel is A8 mod. O7 is fairly difficult to get, but a similar alloy 1.2519 could be purchased from some German steel companies. CPM-M4 probably wouldn't be real difficult to get.

I'd be interested!

Sal, have you got a "sign up sheet" or some such so you can gauge response?

I don't know how I missed this. I check in here multiple times a day and check new posts often. Glad someone finally told me about it. I'm guilty of only reading the first page though so hopefully I understand from what you said in that starter post Sal.

If I understand the first post correctly I'm in for some of the action for sure. Would love a few Wharny ZDP and other premium blades in 3". 4" as a second but that will work too. Gee I wonder what would happen if some of them that made it my way 'accidentally' got cut in half and turned into lockback and frame lock folders? :D

I imagine these would be very popular. Premium steels that the user can embellish himself after buying them for a great price. Whats not to love about that?

love the idea. no handle no sheath low price great. wharncliff"s a great pattern for a mule. I use it a lot for everything from wood carving to tomato slicing. keep me posted. I'm in.

Only thing you missed is that Sal said that he'd like to have a steel that can be done in Golden, first.

Think the idea is to offer the same blade in lots of steels. Not just the premium ones... Though I think everyone is in agreement that the first one(s) should be a newer, exotic steel.

Sal,

If I understand your initial posts, you wanted a testing group of 500 (or make and sell 500 each batch).

If you don't get that many responses will you go ahead with a smaller group (please)?

Thanks,
Sean

Personally, I'd like to try out M4...

There's a bunch of people itching to try this one. I'm one patiently ( bring it up at every opportunity) waiting for it.

We all know nothings perfect. I still want to try it.

20CV gains in popularity. SOG announced their "Team leader" fixed blade coming out in a few months. I'd love to try it head to head with S30V and BG42.

I would love to see a F series carbon- tungsten steel ( Like Super blue). In some ways the ultimate blade steel. Rare as hens teeth here. Maybe another time.

There are plenty of options. Heck, even just using crucibles catalog could take a long time. They've got some tuff stuff. Imagine 10V and 15V wharncliffs affordable.

People's expectations of production companies would change immensely. BG42 is always welcome, and I'd like to try S1V. Pretty simple for a cruicible powder steel. I've already got a CPM 154CM and am underwhelmed.

Lets try Vascowear and mighty T1. That'll sell some diamond sharpeners eh? Joe

Though I am interested, I would prefer not to have them all at the same hardness. Different steels will naturally have different ideal working hardnesses, and it seems pointless to try testing what the steel can do when you know it was not heat treated to its best potential.
Yes, they should be heat treated according to the steel, for optimal toughness. If you make them the same rc, even with individualized ht for a batch, some will be at an disadvatange, and we would want every steel to be at it's best to truly compare. Wear resistance and edge holding aren't all about hardness either.

So these would be directly bought for Spyderco? If overseas shipping is not a problem, I'd be very happy to buy 1-2 of each.

The first run would be to see what complications arise and how many are interested. I would like to use a steel that we can get and make it in Golden so we can have more control.

A wharnie seems to have preference and about 3.5" blade (89mm) seems like it would work. After we make the first run, we can discuss and re-evaluate. We might find that the "testers (Cliff, GunMike, Thom, etc) would like some changes.

We'll sharpen at about 30 degrees, but I imagine many will change that (and share thoughts and experiences).

I'm thinking one net price to anyone. Probably some type of a limit on quantity to one person. Probably through the Factory Outlet. Shipping is on you, overseas will cost more to ship.

We'll post who has offered to make sheaths and handles. I'm sure Mike Sastre and Scott Gere will offer. Any others?

Collector club members will be offered the piece, but I don't know if we'll be putting their number on each piece.

First run will be 500 pcs with an extra hundred for collectors. (total 600).

I'd like to whittle down a steel for the first run. Crucible will "play", I'm pretty sure I can get steel from Timken, Sanvik met with us at SHOT, and Ed Severson (good man) contacted me from Bohler Uddeholm and offered as well. It looks like there are many options.

There are many steels to "play" with and we have a long time to try them all, assuming interest is there. Even a variety of damascus steels could be possible.

Concensus on a first steel, or at least down to 3 would be helpful.

Stainless or Carbon?

Hi Larrin,

I think we can get it all, minimum quantities would be the only issue.

Sean, that depends on the quantities steel foundries will sell to me.

Here is my 3 suggestions, M4, A8 M, and/or 3V. Sal any steels you want to narrow it down too?

Sal - do you have a prototype (regardless of the steel) in the works? Any chance of seeing any pics, please?

I think it is very interesting to see all the suggestions for a carbin/tool steel. If a stainless was one to choose from with all the hype around very hard Sanvik's 13c I'd leen towards that. With my looking at this thread M4 and 52100 seem to be the most popular.

yeah, M4 and 52100 would be my first choices, and 13C26 if it's going to be brought to Golden for machining.

13C26 at 64.5 RC as mentioned in the thread in the general blade discussion forum right now is going right to the top of my list right now, but M4 or 3V are piquing my interest quite a bit, also.

Mike
