Stubby folders

Precisely. :p

Where I volunteer, I need something that wont break on me and still look cute.

Probably not what you're looking for, but CRKT makes a folding stubby Razel knife:
Specifications:
Overall Length: 5.25"
Blade Length: 2"
Cutting Edge: 2" main, 0.923" tip
Blade Thickness: 0.13"
Blade Steel: 8Cr13MoV, HRC 58-59
Grind: Chisel
Closed Length: 3.25"
Weight: 4.4 oz.

I have one. I like it, but it's a bit thick between the scales. More of a woodworker's tool, really. And the blade is a little light by your standards.

The Boker Pipsqueak arrived today and it's a winner (second from the top in the Stubby Family Pictures below). Tough choosing between all four now. The Boker Albatros gives you a lot of value for price. I'll keep rotating them out of the change pocket on my jeans where they fit perfectly. If I had I choose one it'll probably be the Pipsqueak. Great ergonomics, sharp cutter and smallest package. Techno is a close second due to lightweight and most compact.

Open they're all about 6 inches except for the Benchmade at 7 inches. Closed 3.5-4".

Excellent thread. My parents live in LA County so I should probably look at getting something along these lines for my trips home, which are admittedly twice a year tops, but being prepared sometimes means buying extra knives. :D

H&K Conspiracy Folder seems to fits the stubby description:

Overall Length: 7.55"
Blade Length: 3.60"
Blade Thickness: 0.18"
Blade Steel: 9CR13
Handle Material: Titanium/G10
Weight: 6.35 oz.

Not as great a blade steel, but significantly cheaper, cost around $65.

The Spyderco Chubby certainly fits the bill but it could be a while before we see it.

The Chubby prototype, designed by Michael Burch, was one of my personal favorites from this year’s meet. Apparently, Michael Burch has been making this design for some time and it’s been refined over the years. The dual beveled blade allows for very easy penetration.

This knife reminded me a bit of the Spyderco Poliwog, which I’ve carried for a few years as an EDC. The Chubby is much more beefy and fills the hand even better. The titanium handle and integral lock make for a relatively lightweight folder. I think the all steel Poliwog was heavier. The knife handled very well. I think the circular inserts are carbon fiber. I’m usually not a fan of custom makers’ clip designs, versus Spyderco designed clips, but this clip turned out well. It wasn’t too sharp and didn’t pinch the hand in my grips. After I was done taking these photos, I made a mental note to put the Chubby on my wishlist.

The approximate specifications of the Chubby prototype are:
Overall Length: 15,1 cm / 5.94 inches
Edge Length: 5,7cm / 2.24 inches
Blade Length: 5,7 cm / 2.24 inches
Blade Thickness: 0,4 cm / 0.16 inches

Another one that I got last year is the little Curtiss F3 Compact with smooth IKBS flipper action, blade of N690 that's 2.3" long and 0.16" thick.

Blade is too long. Remember, as stated in post #1, it's a blade length of under 3" (75mm) and blade thickness of 0.156" (4mm) or better.

The two latest stubby folders added:

  • DPx HEAT/F 3D Titanium, Titanium FrameLock and a 2.375" blade of Niolox that's 0.18" thick
  • Spyderco Chubby with CF insert Titanium, Titanium FrameLock and a 2.33" blade of S30V that's 0.172" thick.

Just received a DPX HEAT Elmax on the weekend. I like it so much I just ordered the DPX HEAT olive Drab as well.

The Chubby looks really nice. I might have to wait for one to come up as-new. Either that or sell some nice ones...
RamZar, you show some very nice folders. I have several of these; my Techno probably is the winner in my eyes, as I refuse to carry heavy ones...they just make me walk lop-sided.
Nice Pics from you, as usual.
I do reco that you talk to Jim Allen, an amazing gentleman and a fine craftsman. I've had four of his Beasts, IIRC, in 154cm, CPM154, and two in M390. Jim is one of the nicest folks I've met on this forum. He returns emails immediately, and can bump you to the head of the list if the need is there...in his eyes. He's a natural wonder is many ways...you need to talk to him sometime and get "the rest of the story." I really like the guy. Have given the latest of his new Beasts to one of my grandsons, so that means something to me.
