Bad Survive! Deserves A Permanent Post In The Hall Of Shame

Do you think he was being honest?

Well he did say he was on a coffee break.... He just didn't explicitly state the "working hard" also means coffee break, any grind he mentioned also comes back to coffee as well, etc.

Guy would disappear throughout the day.
That stands out- Maybe that's why they couldn't deliver knives from the very beginning. They were always "Waiting for Guy to sharpen them". The 1 thing Guy never seemed to do was just sit down and make knives.

$500-600k worth of unfinished knives in stacks.
These are probably the pre-orders that had no financial incentive to finish. $3500 x $150 is right in the middle. There's no motivation to do work you won't be paid for since you already spent the money.

That's one of the things that just doesn't make sense. Why buy all that material and do all that work and then stop? As others have said, he should have dropped his standards a bit and just hired people to finish the knives.

But it sounds like he had a lot of mental issues and other issues he couldn't deal with.

I don't buy the "high standards". His knives are cnc machined. Some hand "finishing" takes place and assembly. Look at any good fixed blade that's cnc machined, it's similar quality, some better. With a decent machine you can easily keep a thou tolerance and even tighter with a good machine. That means perfectly aligned handles, repeatability, and more. He keeps telling everyone of these super high standards, and people regurgitate it. Guy was a glorified assembler who took long walks, his "standards" were a "commendable" out/excuse for his lack of actually making knives.

"I like long walks on the beach, extended coffee breaks,
and people that send me money accepting nothing in return..."

Can’t wait to get my TFK T9 tomorrow! Y’all should check them out! Tanev Family Knives, another amazing BF maker!!!

This tracks. I clearly recall Ellie making this statement multiple times when they were politely pressed back when their sub was active on when they'd be receiving their knives. Ellie used it a lot "Not to worry, those knives are just awaiting sharpening and will be shipped out any day now!" Six months would go by and the same people would come back asking if those knives were ready yet and when they could expect to receive them. After that, Ellie would allow the sub's hardcore supporters to do her obfuscation for her as they rushed to Guy/Ellie's defense. It was the perfect cover.

Architect Knives comes to mind with your post. Blades sent with scales to be put on, and folks seem thrilled with the quality of the different model.

The knives I have bought from several makers here are so excellent I cannot find one tiny flaw, and they turn out products at very fair prices and their integrity is unquestionable. They are a pleasure to do business with.

As far as ‘standards’ I say Guy used it as an excuse only. There are some phenomenal makers here. I can’t imagine having higher standards than CPK, yet Nathan lets folks know what is going on with testing, production, delivers the goods, AND he is a man of his word.

Every time I see posts from people like Busse and Sal Glesser it makes me think even less of anyone associated with Guy. If these busy folks can be accessible to ‘other-than-influencers’, it is despicable how he lied continuously and never responded to order status inquiries.

Rant over.

Transparency, honesty and integrity never go out of style.
(And they offer refunds to those who request them if they can't meet their stated deadlines.)

Hard agree.

Also, let's get this clear folks. Shiny, myself, and plenty of the detractors in this thread owned and used S?K knives. We know what they look like, and what they can do, what they were and what they weren't. I just want to make sure that's understood so folks don't try to come at any of us with "Well, have you ever uSEd ONe??!?!?!" Yeah, we did. I had multiple GSO4.5s, and they were outshone by my CPK FK2 in every single respect, so let's not get that twisted.

Secondly, I think that Guy and Ellie started leaning hard on this idea that Guy was a super perfectionist so that his products would have more "shine" and give them a bunch of extra leeway they didn't actually deserve by fans who thought they were paying a pittance for some super perfect best-on-the-market knife. They know that people who think they're making out, getting a super great deal are more inclined to sit quiet and not start asking questions. "Oh snap, this guy's a huge perfectionist, that must mean his knives are perfect and are thus totally worth an extra year's wait!" No. They never were. They were decent machine made knives. Nothing more, nothing less.

And reveals publicly if things go awry, whether with materials, machines, testing or schedules...and offers refunds if they are unable to meet their deadlines.

Transparency, integrity and honesty never go out of style.
Accurate.

100%. Good post. I haven't tried architect knives but I've heard good things as well.

I think the supposed backpacking trip will be Guy hauling butt with however much cash he can get any way he can get it. No wife and gave his dog away.
There's another reason recently divorced men give stuff away..because they soon won't be alive to need it. I hope it doesn't come to that.
Jeez. Simp’s getting dark,

Honestly, hearing that Guy was constantly "walking away" at various periods of the day, it would lend credibility to a possible substance abuse problem, which in turn might explain that hilarious screw-up on that knife. 🤣 🤣

10 bucks says he was googling countries in Asia with no extradition while he was "walking for hours" 😂

He might actually be on something and that's what he blew the million bucks on.

I tend to trust makers’ opinions when it comes to S!K, and if they say he made good ones, I believe it. If they say he botched the whole thing because, just like his post heat treat Magnacut tolerances, he never left enough margin, I’d believe that, too.

The fact of the matter is, making quality anything only matters if you’re able to actually produce that thing.

Survive! Knives were good, but not not head and shoulders over their competition. Those haas machines in the background of his videos are on the low end of cnc machines. They aren't as accurate or rigid as better machines. What's that mean? It means their knives were middle of the road. Having had their knives and fixed blades from cpk, busse, winkler, big Chris, benchmade, volunteer, Miller bro blades, spartan blades, spyderco, crkt, swamp rat, Gerber, cold steel, ka bar, and who knows how many more.. hell I left off the customs i have a good pool of knives to judge from. I mean I am a cnc programmer and a machinist, I think I can formulate my own accurate opinion from over a decade of experience.

*More than decade of actual experience going through the plethora of makers and manufacturers out there.

** still untold more to try 😂
