Survive! knives

I'm hoping it's the last camp knife I will need to buy for many years.
At least, that's how I justified the price to myself :P

I realized that my fixed blade camp knives collection was in the same state my folding knives collection used to be in
that is to say, I had 2 or 3 large fixed blades, but they were all budget choppers like the Kershaw Camp 10, the Kershaw Outcast, and the CRKT Chance-in-Hell.
When I first got into knives, I just bought whatever caught my eye since I didn't know about steels or what I really wanted in a knife.
Since learning more, I've upgraded my folding / EDC knives collection quite a bit, so I figured I needed a really nice, upgraded camp knife too.

I will say, my only minor gripe is the micarta feels a little slick, so I'll for sure want to tie a lanyard on, and probably wear gloves when possible. Can anyone speak to the difference in handle materials? How's the texture on the G-10? More grippy?
Are there other handle options I should consider?

While we have all the "Survive" gang here I'd like the ask if anyone has used their CPM 3v knives enough to need sharpening and how did that go ? I only have my GSO 5 , but I only got it this winter so I haven't used it enough for it to need to be sharpened yet . How easy or hard is CPM 3v to sharpen ?

I'll let you know in the fall! :P
I plan on picking up a WSKTS-Ken Onion for all my large fixed blade sharpening needs.

Hi Mike-The-Knife,

I have the GSO-4.1 in 3V steel. Last week I hit a rock while I was batonning a big stick. It chipped slightly at the front and the middle.
I have a Edge Pro apex with the up to 3000 grit stones. I started with the 220 stone than worked slowly to the 3000 grit stone. Now the knife edge is like new. Scary sharp and gives it a mirror edge.
I took me 45 minutes and I found it easy to sharpen.
CPM-3V steel is really awsome. It holds an edge like forever and is really tough.

Here are a few pictures of the knife after sharpening.

I've had a first-run GSO-10 for two winters now. In some of the videos posted in my review thread you can see nicks from impacting barbed-wire fence and tree-spikes. I removed most of this damage with a simple Norton combination stone - coarse/fine. Just this spring, I was removing some blackberry canes along the path behind our house, let the blade reach the ground and heard the unmistakeable sound of steel on concrete - a buried slab of sidewalk that a previous land-owner laid on the hill to aid in traction (sand here is pretty loose). I'll post a video this week of the damage and repair to both the review thread and this one. Stay tuned...

Wow Ruudr , that's quite the sharpening job for sure . Nice work  and thanks for the info .

Chiral , I'll be looking forward to your video . Good to know about the Norton stones though , as I have a medium and a fine one .

What I really need to do is sharpen my sharpening skills lol . Some days I can work at a knife for 20 minutes and have it more dull than when I stared ! I hate when that happens :dejection:

The new SK series looks nice. I am interested in trying out S7.

Does anyone know if there are plans on releasing any larger knives in the SK series? I think a 7/7 in S7 would be awesome. Larger knives make sense to me with such a tough steel.

1st Friday Production Update

In Production:

GSO-3.5: Handles are finishing production and kydex is being pressed. Preorders will be delivering and regular ordering will be open soon.

Could anyone put a good estimate on "soon"? Like this weekend? Next week? Tomorrow? (crosses fingers)

Unfortunately, if history is any indicator, I would think soon still means several months. I sure hope it's sooner as it's finally warmer up around here and I want to try it out.:( Great knives but I think this will be the last time I order direct from them. My favorite, the GSO-6, was purchased from tkc and got to my door in three days. Awesome.

Honestly, you need to have patience when ordering and waiting on direct orders from SURVIVE! Knives. In my opinion, they're well worth the wait, just don't get bent out of shape when your order shipping/delivery date passes, once or four times.

If you can't wait patiently on an order, I would recommend watching TKC closely for the model you want to come in stock. Dale keeps the latest production info up on his SURVIVE! products page.

Jesus is that one heck of a polished edge!

I just got an email update about the 3.5 knives.

Josh at Survive! said that a realistic estimate was that they "would start shipping the end of the month to the beginning of next."

Major "fail" on my part, my sincere apologies. I set-up the camera to record a sharpening video with the GSO-10 on my Norton Crystolon (SiC) combination stone but ran out of space on the memory card pretty quick after beginning to grind. unfortunately, i didn't NOTICE this until AFTER finishing the edge, so I ended up with a minute or so of me chatting and a few minutes of grinding on the coarse side of the stone, and that is ALL, nothing worth editing/uploading

Anyway, a couple of things I'll share is that grinding significant damage (e.g flattening/chipping along >2" of edge to a thickness of ~0.010") back to ~15-dps on CPM-3V at 60 Rc by hand ... it takes a while to bring the bevels together, even using the coarse side of the stone, and ~45 minutes total for both sides of the stone (don't worry, i had not intentions of leaving that at normal speed if I had posted it). Keep in mind that i am not quick about the task, others may be able to do this faster. I could have shortened the time by simply using a more obtuse angle, but i like to keep the sweep that acute for catching the thin and 'bendy' foliage on a slice.

So again, my apologies. Also, sharpening a blade this large can be awkward - take your time keeping that angle steady on each pass. If you have a belt-grinder and fine enough belts, you might stick with that for major repair work to shorten the sharpening time, but for lesser issues or simply to keep the edge keen, SiC or diamond hones work just fine.

Again, my apologies for the fail. Maybe i can post some screen-grabs of the damage before I repaired it...

I wonder if it was Josh that also told a BF member that these would be shipping in January... I would love to believe that these will be shipping soon but the logical side of me just doesn't believe it.

No problem Chiral! Good to know that it worked out fine! Maybe have a picture of the end result?

"SURVIVE! make over"
What does that even mean?
A lot of you have been wondering what we meant in the 1st Friday update when we mentioned Factory 2nds that would be "better than ever" so here is more information:

bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb.jpg
This is a stack of GSO-4.1 blades that didn't pass SURVIVE! quality control standards because their spines are wavy.

We are finally getting caught up around here so Guy will have some spare time to fix these issues. He will be hand grinding all around the perimeter of the blades before they are retumbled. These GSO-4.1s won't show any laser marks around the spine.

Give it a rest willy

If you don't like my posts, feel free not to read and/or respond to them. This thread isn't just for super fan-boys of Survive! who think that they can do no wrong... My posts were in response to Wilson who was wondering when the GSO-3.5's would ship. All I said was that employees of Survive! have been wrong on basically all their projected ship dates and that if he expects to have his knife by the end of the month he might be disappointed.
