Survive! knives

Hmm, Good idea, I wonder how long it would take for shirt to be made? I'm sure people wouldn't mind waiting an extra week or two for the knife if they are getting a free shirt... yeah right! But seriously, the wait won't be much longer and we definitely will not delay in getting those out. The handles didn't come in today but Guy will be sharpening the blades as soon as he is caught up with orders so when they get here it will just be a matter of build and pack.

In the meantime, some of you may want to check out the GSO page. We have a VERY limited amount of materials from the last batch of GSO-5.1s and once those are gone it will be a few weeks until they are available again. I know you guys got screwed a bit on updates in the past so I figured I'd give you all a head start on this one.

Have the 3.5 handles arrived yet? Any new news to share about delivery times? Thanks.

Our handle supplier had a few extra GSO-5.1 handles on the shelf so there are a very limited number of GSO-5.1s available right now. If you like the color green head over and pick one up. There will be A LOT more GSO-5.1s available, with more options, in a few weeks.

We just got the handles in a couple hours ago, no premium handles yet though. But, there is a small issue with one of the fastener tolerances, solid works theory vs machining reality strikes again. As soon as those are done they will be overnighted to us so hopefully we will get them on Friday and I will be spending my weekend building preorders. It is possible that the fasteners won't be here until Monday but either way they will start shipping next week.

got my survive SK-4 a few days ago with black Cerakote.. pretty sick! here are the details:

not sure if you can really tell from the pic but the spine is ground flat on these and throws sparks off a ferro rod no problem!

compared to GSO4.1

trying to show the difference in weight/balance.. i dont have a scale sorry. i can barely tell in hand the balance and weight difference and was surprised how similar they feel.

I'm thinking its time for a Survive! Sub- forum. Guy, are you listening?? This thread alone has gone on for 19 pages. I for one would be here everyday!!! Lets make this happen Survive! Fans. :)

Le sigh....a new brand I need to try out. Would really love to get more experience with 3v and give one of these options a whirl. They look great!

I think it would be cool if we could get a GSO 4.1/EDC 4/S4 edge retention test or rope cutting test together. I would love to see 3v vs Elmax vs M390 vs S90v vs 20cv vs S7.

Rope cutting, like most cutting, depends first upon edge-geometry and finish - thin (<0.030", 15-dps) & coarse (e.g. 400 grit) wins over thick (>0.030") and fine (e.g. 800 grit).

After that, carbide volume takes over as wear-resistance (impact toughness is not really a concern here). Of those, S90V has the most and mostly vanadium carbides, 20CV & M390 are the same composition and second highest, Elmax is just below but all are >10% carbide. CPM-3V has high vanadium but half the Carbon to bring its carbide volume down to ~5%, and S7 is well below that. For rope-cutting, Jim's thread provides a pretty good guideline of what to expect: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...based-on-Edge-Retention-cutting-5-8-quot-rope

Keep in mind that a thinned, coarse-grit S7 blade may outlast a thicker, finer 20CV blade despite the carbide disparity. Also keep in mind that the S7 blade will be easier (less time) to sharpen and is really designed for high toughness vs high wear, CPM-3v is right between. If you do a lot of abrasive cutting or spend a lot of time in corrosive environments, I'd grab one of the stainless blades. Otherwise *shrug*

... does anyone know if a maxpedition single pouch can loop around the slots of the gso 5.1 sheath?

I don't have the pouch, it certainly looks like it might work, but there is an easier way to mount it, same as I do for my leatherman or tape-measure, etc. on any Survive! Kiahdex sheath - use the belt-clip sideways on the front:

Anyone know of any updates on the Necker II? I have been patiently waiting on these since January!

I got tired of waiting so I picked up a BRK Bravo Necker 2, and while I do like it, I'm still gonna get a S!K Necker 2 when they are out.

Since these knives are so hard to get, what is the next best knife?

You'd have to do your own research on that, but a lot of people will point you in the direction of either Bark River Knives, or something from one of Busse's lesser lines (SwampRat, ScrapYard), or you'll hear people suggest ESEE a lot.
