Survive! knives

hey guy, any idea when natural micarta handles will be available for the GSO 4.1? I want one to match my GSO 10! And similarly, will there be a larger variety for GSO 10 handles??

Whew! That is one heck of a line up!

I had an identical camo 5.1 that I gave to my son for his birthday last November, else there would be one more in the picture. The one pictured is number 15, and the one I gave away is number 17, if my memory serves me.

Thanks JCW, when my son comes home to visit next, I'll have him bring his so I can update with a pic including #17. Don't you love family reunions?

When I discovered my Survive family would fit I commandeered it for a quick photo.

In addition to the steel being less expensive, I'm trying to get the price a bit lower by keeping the options simple and prebuilding them. This will save us time in the shop just building knives ahead of time and increase our efficiency. I'm still not sure how this will work out for the final price but I really wanted to give it a try. lol

Yep, we have all of the handle color options up on the handles page of the site.

Side note, does anyone know of a good way to get a nice black oxide on CPM-3V? I've heard ferric chloride might work? Looking for really black, etched into the surface. I'm not a chemist, so I'm wondering if anyone had some good suggestions, preferably from personal experience? lol
PCB etchant might work (found at Radio Shack) for a really dark finish.

I'm particularly excited to begin wearing one of these new CPM-20CV blades. I'm loving this steel.
How is it compared to M390? If I remember correctly, it's almost identical, isn't it?

Also, I have one of your first 4.1s in M390 before you thinned the edge on the later production runs. Mine will primarily be a deer hunting knife, but may also see camping use. Would it be beneficial to send it in to have you thin the edge to current dimensions, or would that not be possible?

Very nice

So far I've only got the GSO 5 in 3V . Can someone verify for me weather or not the handles of the 5 , 5.1 , 6 , 6.1 and 7/7 are all the exact same size ? Seems to me the handles where all the same and the blades as well , other than the length and choil .

Just received my GSO 4.1 last week! And WOW! Very impressed. Can't wait to get out and give it some good use!!! Did a few sheath mods too(belt loop and fire steel holder)! Wish my pictures were better, they don't do the knife justice sadly.

Thanks again for the fat wood Mike!

Unless there's a hole spacing difference (I haven't measured) the 5, 5.1, 6, and 7/7 share the same scales I believe. I can pull some and compare Tomorrow if you don't get a definitive answer before then, but I'm pretty sure that's right.

The blades are the same width (or very very close) as I use the same hole spacing on the sheaths.

I am very interested in the Survive GSO knives, my focus immediatly being on the 4.1 but I have a couple questions. I thought I had read awhile back that new hardware (bolts) were being made that would fit flush with the end of the "nut". Is this still in the works? Or maybe I made it up in my dreams... Also I do not like lanyards nor lanyard holes on most of my knives and was wondering if scales could be ordered without the pocket milled out for the hidden lanyard? The hidden lanyard hole is a nice feature making it unobtrusive whether you use a lanyard or not but the 4.1 would be a hunting knife for me and unneeded holes (for me) just collect blood and guts. :thumbdn:

I haven't heard of an option of not having a lanyard hole... it would be easy to fill with hot glue or a hardening putty of some sort if it really bugged you. Of course it would be pretty easy to wash out the lanyard hole when you wash the rest of the knife though too...;)

Guy currently has fasteners for the 4.1 that have the middle screw longer than the fore and aft screws to better fill the nut. I do recall the discussion surrounding this in the past, and they are on his website currently. Regarding the lanyard slot/milling, I have never read or heard anything regarding an option removing this feature. The lanyard slot is pretty much covered by the scales, so it really is not that noticeable if you chose to go lanyard-less. I do agree that it does create more of a cleaning issue when dressing game. It would be worth mentioning to Guy as I am sure that he is collecting ideas for future build options. Perhaps a Hunter line of GSOs.

Thanks Kiah . No need to pull the handles . I already thought the handles where all the same and just wanted to make sure I had that right .
Some companies make the handles different on every knife . I fine Guy's approach much better for everyone . For him , he can make the same handle and use it on several different knives . That HAS to help keep cost down . For buyers , you know that if the handle on your 5.1 feels great , that the 7/7 for example would feel the same . That makes for less "catch and release" because handles don't feel right to you . Win win

Hey there, the new bolts are variable length and the male now fills the barrels up to about 2 threads below the screwdriver slot. Each of the 3 screws and barrels are different lengths, to match the handle profile. The screws aren't flush, as that would render the screwdriver slot on the barrel useless. No plans for offering the handles without lanyard holes but I purposely designed it the way I did to make it unobtrusive, as you said, if you don't use a lanyard. Hope that helped. ;)

@Mike-The_Knife, as of right now all of those handles are the same between the GSO-5,5.1,6 and 7/7.
