Survivors: other knives you like

My A2 from Bark River and O1 from Battle Horse are very good steels. Used for wood and game and food prep. My s35 from Fiddleback is also excellent. In normal use, I can detect almost no difference in wear.

A2 and O1 strop up very easy. The Duke is excellent.

I had an A2 gunny from BRKT for several years, and can attest that good A2 is a great steel in terms of the edge it'll take and ease of maintenance.

That said, I'm really appreciating the extra edge retention and corrosion resistance of 3V, not to mention the knowledge that it's doubly tough as compared to A2, so it's definitely taken the lead in my preferences. I definitely won't sneeze at a well-priced knife in A2, but at the price the fiddlebacks command, I'd want to see my preferred steel (or something with comparable properties) before dropping the coin on one, personally.

I just picked up the first spyderco I have ever had. It's the techno. For the most part I am not a fan of spyderco's because the hole in the blade makes for a tall, pronounced 'hump' on the spine. The techno is much more subdued along those lines. This little knife is a tank, stout as heck, and I've gotten a seriously sharp edge on it. Very nice little bulldog of a pocket knife.

LionSteel M5 and Knife Research Legion SC are looking really good to me right now. Both have Sleipner steel, which seems to be like the love child of A2 and D2 on steroids. Anyone own either of these? Your thoughts?

I replied in another thread, but will put up here, Knife Research is gone, so any KR knife may not carry a warranty, be aware. But all of Molletta's designs will likely be produced by Lion Steel, if they aren't in production already, and I doubt that company is going anywhere. That typed, I've not owned either knife, but have been attracted to them more than once. Now that I have a 4.7, the M5 doesn't interest me as much ;) Love that rounded spine though...

I was so excited to order the m5 and when I got it I was ready to use it .... so I did and was underwhelmed. Lionsteel had been in my sights for some time because of the blade shape ,steel used and their reputation. I hate to say it but the handle was uncomfortable after a while mostly because of the protruding tang even though rounded created hot spots 😑also the sleipner did not hold up as long as I thought it would it sharpened up fairly quickly but that didn't really help me where I was . Now the last thing that bugged me (other than the protruding am sometimes uncomfortable ricasso) was the handle. I have the m4 in black g10 and have no grip same as my m5 which was in olive wood . Hate to be a downer I just thought I'd share this

A2 is a much better steel imho

I'm glad some of us found this thread :D

Lion Steel is an interesting company to me as well. I'll be interested in hearing more from those who get one of their knives.

sfrigon, sorry to hear you didn't love your Lion Steels!

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, you are not alone in your opinion of sleipner and the M5. The more I read, the less enthusiastic I become. :(

LOL! Great minds think alike. I was actually looking at that one (and the M3), and think that it might be a better choice for me too.

I can't believe no one ever mentions Trc knives !? I have the apocalypse and the k1s and another on the way it's definitely my Second favorite company behind survive and I'm shocked that I don't see them anywhere on bf

I had never even heard of them before. Thanks for the heads up. They look very interesting and cool. I need more knives like I need another hole in my head, but I do have room in my knife storage cabinet. The two you mentioned are exactly the size I am looking for (replacement for 4.1 and 6).

Since you appear such a wealth of knowledge, do you have any other brands to suggest?

FWIW, I'm having very good luck with sleipner, on my gollik, which is a 6" long 1/4" thick drop-point. Full flat grind down to sub-0.02" behind the edge. Bit thinner than my 4.7 or Carothers FK.

Anyways, I've wailed on that thing a bit, including chopping through some small hardened nails, w. no edge damage, and it seems plenty tough to me. Stood up fine to moderate batonning too, and carving. Definitely seems to hold an edge better than the A2 on my old Gunny did (which was no slump at all).

It's still pretty new to me, and the rainy season here hit right after it arrived, so it hasn't been out camping much, but I don't have any worries about pressing it into use as an all-around camp knife.

Look them up they are out of Lithuania and their knives are on lamnia . com

Still haven't heard of them. I went to that site, and listing knives by country, Lithuania isn't even listed.

Alright, Google found them. Luckily, Google can actually search on 3 letters...
