Swamp Rat INFIDU

pjandyho, hi bud good to see you here! Congrats on the infidu. I have an INFI RMD from a previous ganza, and you're correct, the INFI version is a bit thinner than a standard RMD by about .015" to .020."

You can absolutely get SR-101 screaming sharp, it might take some reprofiling as you know, the original edge is very thick. But once you get it where you want it, it's easy to maintain and bites deep.

You know I'm a GSO fan, too, but like Chiral, the 5.1 has not yet unthroned the RMD as my favorite blade in that size. When Guy sends out the new versions with the recontoured handles, it's going to get very interesting!

Here's a pic of a custom shop of mine that I like very well. Standard RMD with FFG grind and drop point.

...I should not have wandered over here. The RMD seems to pop up a lot, and I keep going back and forth about trying one and always tell myself I don't like the clip point enough...and then i come here...and find out there has been a FFG DP RMD all this time!? Also a big fan of the Swat version... All the pictures shared thus far are great! seems like a lot of hapy owners!

Except it won't be easy scoring an RMD with a FFG and DP grind. It's almost like the Grail knife.

Welcome to the Dark Side redwood :D

It does pop up. I have an infimandu I really like and I still keep eyeballing ratmandus. I'm even tempted to order one.

Thanks guys, there seem to be timeless designs, inseparable from the name associated with them, and whenever busse/swamprat come up this is one of them. It also fits that size requirement of the fabled do-all knife as well. I'll keep my eyes peeled for the right thing... that drop point looks like a half/heigh ash-1... love it...

I love it too. Wish I can get my hands on one. Wish it is in INFI too.

When the custom shop reopens, it would be worth an email to trissy at swamprat or lexi at busse to check on the availability of an infi rmd with those specifications.

An ffg drop point infi rmd with hand-shaped scales and solid pins? Yes please!! It won't be cheap, but oh so nice.

That will be so cool! I wonder when they will reopen their book for custom orders? Anyhow, I will keep my eyes peeled for the time they reopen.

I'm a huge fan of the RMD design!

Also, I would like to chime in on the difference in thickness between the Ratmandu and Infidu mentioned earlier...

I have two Ratmandus and one Infidu. The Ratmandus are from a few years apart in production. The earlier one feels more squarely cut (spine etc meets At a sharp 90 degree angle) and is .18 in thickness. The second one feels noticeably smoother around the spine and choil (the choil thickness is also markedly thinner) but the spine is actually thicker at .19. The Infidu feels more like the early RMD and is the thinnest of them all, at .17 in thickness.

I love them all, but the Infidu is pretty sweet!!

Thanks for the input on the spine thickness. So theoretically the Infidu should be a better slicer due to the thinner spine but does it translate to actual reality in use? I saw a video review of someone commenting you can never get an RMD to slice paper and that has stuck in my head since then. I find it hard to believe but then I have nothing to verify.

I can get even my Rodent 6 to slice paper, and even shave. Just takes patience. But I do prefer blades to have a maximum thickness of about 0.2, unless they're over 8" blade length.

This I believe. It is just a matter of sharpening the blade up and probably reprofiling the edge angle if need be.

pjandyho- My first RMD came (used) with a convex mirror edge. It was outstandingly sharp, even if you discount the "thickness" of the knifes design. It shaved paper like nobodys business. One of the sharpest knives I've ever handled. The other two will cut paper just fine, but with factory edges, the cuts aren't as effortless.

All in all, the RMD is a great jack of all trades kind of knife.

Just as I had thought. You have to get away from those factory edges to see some slicing power. It's a shame that Swamp Rat and Busse didn't bother to make their knives sharp as it should. Thanks for your confirmation.

My INFIdu can slice paper in its sleep. It currently can split one hair fiber into multiple fibers --- but then again --- I take my knives to the next level

Cool! Mine is almost polished now. Just that my finest diamond hone is still too coarse. I did use a ceramic to smoothen it out but the surface is still not consistent throughout, and those smoothened areas were shining after stropping.
