Tell me why I should or should not get a military.

I wish I had a little bit of history to reinforce my opinion. I've wanted a Military for so long, but I got my first a month ago. The only thing to share is I was so overwhelmed I bought my second two weeks later.

I'm going to try and pick up the black/black version in the next few days. Need to just transfer funds. You guys have more than swayed me in the military direction. I desperately need one now.

I made my own black one using the DLC blade and M390 handles, but couldn't find a black pivot.

To me, tip up is not a big deal. I did not buy the mili for a long time because of it. I finally had read something that Sal said about it and it convinced me to try it. The knife deploys so fast in the tip down position, tip up would slow that down. I even tried tip down on a para2 and think it works just as well. Every knife has its own flare an ergonomics that make one way or the other work better. Also personal preference plays a big role.

I would certainly like to see standoffs and a bigger lanyard hole but these could just be rolled out as an update say next year. Does not really make it a Military 2. Now a compression locked version would certainly call for a Military 2 renaming :)

Not obvious! Tip up goes against everything Spyderco was originally founded from, clipit draw.

I hear where you're coming from and I dont have any real problem with tip down only but some people are dead set on tip up. If six extra little holes helps Spyderco sell more of a great design like the military then why not?

you're probably right. i would still like to see the update, though. i trust sal's judgment, but i would at least like to see a larger lanyard hole.

i think the reasoning behind the backspacer is probably to prevent dirt and debris from entering the spine area of the knife, which could ding the blade's edge. if the reasoning is something like this, keeping a backspacer is fine. however, i just can't think of any logical reason for not making the lanyard hole larger to fit 550 paracord, especially on a knife called the "military".

Completely agree on the 550 lanyard hole

While it wouldn't bother me to see more holes on the handles the biggest downfall of them upgrading to tip up is the added weight of bigger liners. Then again, its just another choice among such a great catalog of knives. They would sell more of them and should certainly explore it. Even if its a sprint or limited run.

I dont have a lanyard/fob on my Militaries because they're carried tip-down. I can't think of anything else to improve on it though, except maybe added jimping in some areas, and larger torx screws. I replaced all of mine with T8/T9 body screws.

The Military first shrinks, then it multiplies !

One day I'll get a full Ti one...

One more part of the equation, your checking account shrinks. I only have my CRUWEAR though. I played with a black on black version during a pass around and decided it wasn't too big and waited for the next special version to come out. I will wait for the next special version or try and find a fluted Ti for a decent price. I probably won't get the regular Ti one though. I am liking 10V a lot, or maybe a midnight blue G10 S110V.
