"Thats illegal!!!"

I must give props where due, I often take the route less noticed but not always. Props Joe:thumbsup:

Shiny remember I’m old :)

Meaning at 49 and wearing suits etc a lot at work no one is looking to hassle me

When it comes to carrying around my family in this crazy world we live in that is when it’s the most important to me

Imagine being in a facility surrounded by women and children and a wacko walks in with a gun

Imagine than wishing for your kit that is home on the dresser

I know you get my point

Thx for the kind words

I completely get it, you're preaching to the choir my friend. I'm not old and have some tattoos so right off the bat I draw more attention than I care for now a days.

Family is the most important thing and the ability to keep them safe is inalienable. You don't know me well but our mindsets aren't far apart at all. You're doing it right Joe.

I have two sons and a wife, I know what my priorities are and will do everything within my power to make sure they are safe.

Chris

You aren't that old Joe, quit feigning old age :p. I would never have guessed you had ink!

So much of peoples reactions are based on appearances and the way you carry yourself. Which I think you've mastered. I share your sentiment regarding the longevity of our families, blessings and good fortune to yours as well.

i get this a lot '' that's illegal'' comments.

for some reason there's a myth around here that a pocketknife can not be bigger than the palm of your hand.
so very often when people ask about my knife and i hand it too them they lay it on their hand and say ''oh yea that's illegal''

i honestly don't know where this myth came from, maybe another Dutch guy here may know it.

oh and for some reason stupid people seem to think i carry knives purely to stab people... which is just.. idek what to say to that...
why would i want to stab people???!

Such an irksome myth. I've had several police officer friends say that was the law, and it just plainly isn't, which is very upsetting. My girlfriend's brother is in the Navy and insists that's their rule, which I'm not sure of but I sure hope not cause then I could have a knife with a blade 2" longer than he could, but I got him a GEC #15 Navy Knife which is about the most PC a knife can be.

As far as any Army Navy regs on knife blade length limits, the real answer is -

First, knife blade length limits are set by each base.

Back in 2012, the Base Regs for San Diego Naval Station had a 2-1/2" max on knife blades, folding or fixed (F/F).

Also in 2012, Fort Stewart, GA, had a 3" limit. They also prohibited machetes with sharpened blades. How anyone ever clears rush there I don't know.

Fort Gordon, IA regulations, as of 2006, had a 3" limit (F/F) but commanders could authorize longer blades.

Japan instituted a 2.2" limit on knife blades back in 2009. US Navy and Air Force bases posted that the law did NOT apply WHILE ON BASE, and strongly advised against carry any knife off base.

When I was on active duty, the ships I was on let you carry what ever was sold in the Ship's Store. THe largest knives usually found in the stores were Buck 110s and Schrade LB7s, both of which have 3-3/4" blades.

The Navy Occupational Safety and Health (NAVOSH) OpNavInst 5100.19D simply indicates that knives of the appropriate type should be used for tasks, especially for personnel engaged in Underway Replenishment should carry knives appropriate for routine and emergency operations. Really vague there.

No military regulation and no law is going to based on something as variable and esoteric as "palm sized". Who's palm? Tom Thumb or Shaquile O'Neil?

Im giving a speech Wednesday over custom knives and Im going to try and explain why some people would pay 75-$90 for one my customs... Hopefully wont be too difficult once they see all the work that goes into them haha

Other Dutch guy here. This was something they told me back when I was a young boyscout, but it was always meant as a rule of thumb and just because they didn't want little kids to have huge knives. A lot of people take it literally.

Our laws about weapons are a huge clusterf***. And that's just the national law, local government may have added to it. In practice, the cop that stops and checks you decides what is illegal and what isn't. They tend to look at context a lot (are you in the woods wearing your scout uniform or are near a club in the big city?)

On a sidenote, I had a huge laugh at my previous employer. It was a port facility that receives international vessels. They have to live up to the ISPS code for port security. So my boss went to one of those mandatory events/courses and some guy there told him to distribute a pamflet. Which he then delegated to me. The pamflet told us employees we shouldn't take any illegal weapons to work, such as rapiers, crossbows and (I kid you not) rocketlaunchers. It even had a picture of an RPG-7 on it. Needless to say, we were all pretty bummed we couldn't take our rocketlaunchers to work anymore.

What bothers me is the number of law enforcement officers that don't know state or local knife or gun laws. The laws that are written in such a way, that they are left up to interpretation or intent, are also a problem.
Agreed. I have found that many of the LEOs in my area are not up to snuff on our knife laws. Other officers that I have spoken with have said they take the actions of the individual into consideration more than the size or type of knife being carried.

Hi all, first off I am 63 yrs. old, live in Ontario Canada, and just recently started to collect old folding knives and fixed blades which I am really fond of. I grew up in southern Ontario and remember quite well the kind of kids who carried switchblades, flick blades and/or automatics. Those kids were called "Hoods" and they terrorized our city and lots of others as well. This was during the 60s and 70s, and these idiots did not care a rats ass about taking out their knives and scaring the crap out of people. Schools, public and secondary, pool halls, street corners downtown, flick, flick, flick, flick, I am sure you get the scenario now about what I mean, even my older brother had a switchblade.....not much wonder I didn't like knives. well...that was a long time ago and no doubt most of those ......"hoods" grew up or went to jail but I got over my dislike of knives and now have about 20 folding knives and 30 fixed bladed knives. I carry a 3 inch folding Winchester pocket knife on my person at all time and when I go fishing and camping I always have a hunting or small bowie on my belt. If someone needs a sharp tool, I always have one at the ready. Your friend Trevor Calhoun.

All the landscapers use machetes here in Southern California. Open carry of fixed blades is legal in CA. Watch out for the sneaky fellow concealing his 24” machete in a leg sheath inside his trousers. He’s easy to spot by his peculiar gait.

Then there's the Salvadorean Army Knife...

75-90 for a custom. Are you even breaking even?

Still surprised by how many people still think a knife is illegal because its longer than the palm of their hand.

I swear to god this appeared on an episode of some show everybody watches for sure. Seems like every cop everywhere in the world believes this. They all think a knife longer than their palm is wide means “I get to keep your knife.”

They believe this all over the world, arleast in North America. I am curious, where did this idea come from. What is the source of this myth and how did it spread.

B buffalo01 I would talk about why people would pay closer to $200+ for a custom as while you may be doing more as a hobby and learning. I think talking to highlight value it might be better to draw on higher end knives and you can mention your product and prices and how you differ from the higher cost products.
