Little CRK Mods--Less is More

Most all my CRKs are larges--3/21s, Starbenza 25, Startac, Inkosi--and most have minor mods, some unseen, and most by achieved by elimination. The most basic involves tweaking the action to make opening and closing freer as I like to be able to flick my knives open which is considered sinful by some Reeve purists. On my 21s, I start by disassembling, cleaning, then fine sanding the PB washers down minimally (.001-2ish), polishing, and replacing the grease with NanoOil--also frowned upon in certain sections. :( The action still feels hydraulic when opening and closing slowly, but the blades flick out easily and free-drop with the lockbar held open.

I bought this user StarTac replete with blade scratches as a user for my son. The seller had ScotchBrited the handle slabs and I kinda like the look of it. Seller's pics here as I never got any of my own.

Edited out the double pic and replaced with the other side.

I like my lanyards long, loose, and floppy so it's out with the stock pins with their tiny holes and the cord gets tied up through the vacated openings in the slabs.

I originally tied up my Startac the same way, but followed the lead of member N Norvox in his BF thread and replaced the lanyard pin with an additional standoff and screws, tying the lanyard around that. CRK now sells the necessary hardware as a "kit", but for me that will always be the Norvox Mod.

I have been using the Spyderco Waterway for a few weeks now and find it to be a truly outstanding knife in design, functionality and materials science. Using my well traveled H1 Atlantic Salt as a benchmark for corrosion resistance; I have had this knife in everything from acidic foods blood, salty grease, vinegar, as well as spending days carried in saltwater and humid environments. After all of this, there are absolutely zero signs of corrosion. It takes and keeps a really fine edge easily and is one of the most elegant "slicers" in my collection. I find myself using it the kitchen as much as out in the world because it is a pleasure to use and give you *that* feeling when you connect with a blade and just appreciate it exceptionality in your uses. I am sure most of ya'll understand exactly what I mean! Kudos to @Sal Glesser and @Surfingringo for an truly stellar knife.

The only thing I have found that I would prefer on this knife is visibility. I have found myself using, moving, spending a lot of time trying to locate the knife, as is a common case with other black or understated knives in my collection. This is also true across the many locations this knife has inhabited, it blends in. I decide to do a mod to help with that. Basically, using no real talent to speak of; I stole some high end fingernail polish from my lady (also got busted doing it), painted the inner part of the checkering, let it dry, used a sharpie oil paint pen in orange, died it with hair dryer, then sanded the surface of the checkering to expose the black ridges. I also added a piece of glow-in-the-dark paracord I had laying around, and used the paint pen on the lip of the sheath since it makes locating the inlet when sheathing much easier in low light conditions. It will take some use to see if this finish will be durable at all, but so far so good.

Cheers,
~D

I'm glad that someone remember about the Norvox mod and I'm really pleased that other users are using my idea :)

I've been eyeing the hinderer and traveler but I'm hesitant to pull the trigger. Hinderer slippy handle isn't neutral enough to me as I don't really like handles that guide me so much (I can't quite explain and have never had a hands on with any hinderer series) it looks great though. The traveler is likely in my future once I read more reviews. I've been trying to mod a manly knives comrade as they're wasp model is a personal favorite. As for the Benchmade and at I've tried the proper but the sabre grind just isn't for me, and the at just not my style at all.
