The $100 Traditional Knife Challenge

I'd buy a decent bottle of whiskey, a double edged razor blade, sit on the ashes and contemplate my life.

I'd want to get a GEC #48 Trapper, Vic Classic, and a Mora fixed blade. Should be just at $100 (76+, 10, 13). Realistically, probably just a Vic Pioneer and maybe the Mora if I was heading out of the city.

Edit: A Schrade 293 should be easy enough to find too at less than half the price of the GEC. That's another option.

Sorry, Kamagong. On the way home you were mugged by a wayward Sikh who took only your knives. Rough day, I know.

That mugger has great tastes. At least the knives went to someone who'll appreciate them, lol...

If I had to limit myself to these knives for the next three years, I'd get a Tidioute Scout for $59.87, a Mora for $11, and keep an eye out for a nice, used Spyderco Endura. Should do the job well enough, though not with the same dash that I'm used to.

This is a tough question.
Right now everything in me is telling me that I would get by with just my GEC Bull Nose, but deep down inside I would want a locker. I'm thinking a #73L, in fact I'll just stick with the one I have.

That leaves me with another $25 bucks, which is enough to snag a little yeller peanut I guess.

sodbuster jr. $20, byrd cara cara $25, rough rider peanut $ 10, carbon steel mora $15, 3 frost trappers $5 a piece at local knife shop, cheap walmart filet knife $5, winchester multi tool $10... $100 well spent !!!!

I would spend about $25 on a Case Sodbuster. About $25 on a Colt mini trapper. About $25 on a Marbles Camp cleaver/machete and buy as large a Norton combination India stone as I could find with the rest.

Note, none neither of the two listed are currently pocket favorites, but they would certainly be acceptable pocket knives in an austerity situation as described. I recently bought some 2nd tier pocket knives, getting four different knives for a total of $80.

I generally stay away from these kinds of hypothetical questions, or at least whine about them, but stuff does happen to folks that is completely beyond their control. I watched a video at church last night on the Japan Tsunami in one fairly small coastal town and the town was completely wiped out in the 9 min it took to watch the video. A lot of folks lost everything including their lives. No one escaped with more than what was in their hands and pockets. So, this is at least as plausible as some of the other scenarios we put forth. It warrants some thought.

In my choices above, I might be able to scrounge a sharpening stone for a couple bucks at the right place, or maybe a file and a ceramic coffee cup; I'd need the coffee cup for other duty anyway. This would let me buy a RR or Colt canoe, or a Case slim trapper in delrin with the other $20. Just thinking like a knife knut.

I was interested to note that my three choices are knives I seldom carry as well. Although I did just use my Mora to cut some hard rubber table runners. Man, can those things cut.

Hi mnblade -

Buck Ranger, Vic Waiter and a Case yellow delrin peanut.

That'd get me through the year nicely.

best

Hmmm, if it's all I would have for three years I'd go with a case yella peanut for edc, and a Leatherman Wave for everything else.

I'd haunt fleabay, and get myself some good deals on used knives in good condition.

Some of the deals I've gotten over the last three years:

Victorinox Classic keyring $3. + $4. shipping

Victorinox Huntsman (my favorite) $12. + $4. shipping (I've seen several go for under $15.)

Case #6265 two-blade hunter $29. + free shipping

U.S. Schrade LB7 with sheath $14. + $6. shipping (I bought a like-new one two years ago)

Buck 119 w/sheath $22. + $7. shipping

I think this comes to $1. over the limit, but I figure I can dig some nickels & pennies & dimes out the burnt cushions of my blown-up couch and make up the difference.

I'd get a GEC Calf Roper...and then with the leftover cash, find a used SAK Super Tinker....

Folder - Victorinox Huntsman or Wenger Evogrip S18.
Fixed - Mora Clipper or a Mora 510, both would be carbon steel.
Hatchet - Fiskars or a Wetterlings (if I found one for under $50).

$30 Buck 110, $10 Mora, and then splurge on a knife I've never had but always wanted - $60 Case SBJ Chestnut. When your house explodes, you gotta enjoy the little things in life.

I dunno. I carried a Buck 303 everyday for about 10 years back in the 70's and 80's and never felt like I didn't have enough blade. I guess a Buck 303 would do, but I might splurge and buy a 301 instead.

Edited to add: Might buy a Vic Classic, as well. I like having the toothpick handy.
