The $100 Traditional Knife Challenge

Hmmm.... like Ed J, I usually stay away from these but in light recent readings of folks that have lost everything due to flooding in rural settings, this thread seems constructive. (Not the usual thread to prep for the zombie attacks, etc.)

For honest to Pete utility, and not for using pleasure I would have to go with what I know. I would take a Buck Large Stockman in the pocket ($30), and for camping, cleanup, hunting, and other heavier chores I would take a Buck 119 ($55). Those two would do 99% of what I need.

With the last $15 I would get either get a SA Tinker, or a Mora.

Robert

I would need a Vic rambler for the keys, a alox Vic electrician, a medium Case CV stockman to be my in pocket EDC with bone handles and a Mora 2000 for the hunting and fishing and a mora 511 for my carpentars throusers. Mabye I would need 120 $ for it or mabye I can do it within the 100.

Bosse

Edit. I also need a fellkniven DC4. First I need one knife then the stone and after that the other knives.

I gotta say, this is a good thread. I answered last night, then went to bed and found myself laying there, staring at the ceiling, and pondering the other possible combinations. Assuming that I would have access to actual handtools, I might choose the following.

Victorinox alox soldier - hands down best bang for the buck knife I've ever owned

Spyderco delica - regular grind, not ffg

Leatherman Micra - for my keyring

before I answer the OP, I'd like to answer Kevin about his last pic....when you will come over here, you will really know what this is all about:

Ok, back to knives. Without even spending 100 usd, I would get:
- a stainless Opinel #6 and a #7
- a Vic Classic
- a Mora Companion
- a Vic Soldier
...and the pizza, of course!

I don't know if machetes are considered traditional knives here, but a couple of years ago I bought two Cold Steel machetes, one a Kukri and I forget the name on the other but it was a 15" with a large handle. Both of them are really great machetes for the money. Don't underestimate the value of a machete around the house (if you are in a rural situation anyway). That's why I picked up the Marbles Cleaver/Machete in my list; sort of a dual purpose blade.

I'd probably pick up a sak soldier or SI and keep the cash for food and such till my life was back in order

A Cabela's Alaskan Guide Buck 110 in S30V, or a GEC #73 single-blade with lock as I still like a large knife for EDC, and then probably an A. G. Russell 3.0 Titanium lockback.

My turn, I guess. Using prices on that big auction site for new items, I came up with this complement ...

EDC: Case yellow CV peanut - $25
Woods/picnics/trips: Victorinox Rucksack with corkscrew insert screwdriver - $40
Keychain: Victorinox Rambler - $20
All-purpose: Opinel no. 8 - $15

In actuality, I'd probably bid low on used versions and end up spending less (I could then spend the difference on more beer).

A Case Peanut and an Alox SAK. My favorite is the Pioneer Settler. I call it my Swiss White Owl.
With the money left over, I'd buy a Classic for my keys. And maybe an Opinel. I'm sure I could get all four knives for under a hundred.

Pizza Pizza :)

Mark,

If your question only pertains to traditionals, my choince would be one of A.G.Russell's curved regular jacks. If it is not constrained to traditionals, I would probably go with a Spyderco Chaparral.

SAK Classic $12
SAK Huntsman $25
Opinel #6 $10
Mora #2 $10
Buck Stockman 371 $20
Kabar Little Finn $25

OR

Queen Medium #9 Stockman $56
Queen Hunter Fixed $45

Three years?? That's a long haul....

Made me think though and I've decided on two knives I own but don't always use that much. They would be very good for this survival in knife wilderness though.

CASE Large Stockman Amber Bone cv a bit big for the pocket but I feel you need a bigger folder in this emergency, 3 very useful blades and easy to sharpen.

Marttiini Condor. A stainless puukko with rubberised handle, superb grip in all weathers, very safe sheath too. Easy to maintain and sharpen. Might just get in a stainless Opinel for personal food prep ,for the money too.

All goes to show with meteor showers, you need to BURY a cache of knives too:D:D

Since I couldn't easily replace my Queen Classic Cattleknife one of these....
