The $100 Traditional Knife Challenge

It's hard enough for me to go a week without dropping more than $100 on knives. 3 whole years? Perish the thought!

If such a calamity were to befall me, I think I'd do exactly what Jackknife said, and go with a Buck 301 and a Case peanut. That's all that I'd really NEED.

  • Victorinox Spartan Lite - $30 (2 blades, 4 screwdrivers, including in-line phillips, flashlight, can/bottle openers, corkscrew) This one, I'd carry if I thought I might need tools on a given day.
  • Victorinox Classic - $10. This one would live on my keychain.
  • Case Russlock - $35. This could skin animals, be a good pocket carry, and double as a tactical folder.
  • Buck Lancer - $25. For days when I don't need a lot of knife, i.e. everyday office-type days.

A hundred bucks even huh?

I suppose I'd go get a Vic classic, a yella CV peanut, a Number 7 or 8 Opinel, and a Ontario 12 inch machete. If there was some left, depending on local prices, I'd pick up a number 1 mora.

That combo should see me for a very long while, if need be.

Carl.

Old Hickory Butcher knife ( it's a very good traditonal belt knife for not a whole lot of cash )

Buck 301 ( for general EDC use )

Case Peanut (in yellow Delrin CV it's use would be for more uptight situations where a larger knife would be socially akward)

Case CV yellow Delrin Sodbuster JR. ( for work and utility )

Leatherman wave (50)
spyderco tenasious (35)
Mora(15)
then i have everything i need (kinda) and id be OK, but not great. Im just a youngin and the idea of loosing my knifes makes me sick to my stomach

I think I would go with the always dependable Condor Parang or Golok $30 without sheath + Victorinox Gunman $30 & a Schrade schf9 for $30 / $40. If I had enough left over I'd get a basic Mora.

:)

nice sod buster but what is the ??machete?? it looks amazing!!

I'm gonna give it another shot

Case yellow sod buster
Original Leatherman PST

I'd save the other 60.00 incase one of these two broke, or I needed a fixed blade, which I don't forsee happening.

Thank you! That is a standard Ontario Machete in 1095. It is one of a few project machetes I did when I was learning to use my belt grinder :)

I thinned the entire machete, carefully added a drop point, finished with cork belts, sharpened with leather and compounds. I made the handles out of scrap canvas micarta and attached them with Corby Bolts.

Its my favorite woods carry by far. :)

This is a great one, if I had to...I guess I could get away with just one fixed blade Queen 4185 in whatever handle was cheapest at the time ($45 or so) Kershaw Scallion for carrying everyday (another $40 or so) and a $10 Steel Warrior Trapper. With whatever is left I'd have to get some wet/dry sandpaper and a mousepad.

Walk into a pawn shop and get a slipjoint in there. Perhaps an old schrade or Victorinox. Then get a Becker bk11 or 14, whichever happens to be cheaper.
If I have to choose that slipjoint, well I do want to try a kabar dogs head. The coppersmith Barlow...

Ok, this looks fun. Let me give this a go!

Victorinox Cadet ALOX BLK.........................$24 & FREE Shipping (No Taxes)
Morakniv Classic No 2 Wood Handle..............$13.65 & FREE Shipping (No Taxes)
Estwing Sportsman's Hatchet......................$29.69 & FREE Shipping (No Taxes)
Bahco Laplander Folding Saw.......................$25.95 & FREE Shipping (No Taxes)
Shoptek 3-Piece Break-Off Utility Knife Set.... $3.95 & FREE Pickup (Taxes Included)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total= 97.24

I most likely would pick up 2 of the famous $1 knives from that major conglomerate store that is located everywhere. Just so I could have something as a absolute last resort. After
them two knives are added to the total it would make my grand total $99.36.

^^^^^^^^What he said! That's my kind of thinking. Alternatively, a Victorinox Cadet, a Victorinox Classic, and a lower $$ Spyderco, or Benchmade Mini-grip (used) for a good price.

EDC: Case Yeller Delrin Peanut!

Normally I would stop here because that is all the knife I need in my normal life, but with meteorites and all I might add a few more:

Fixed: Morakniv Mora of Sweden Classic 2 Utility Fixed
Multitool-ish: Victorinox Swiss Army Super Tinker
To play with: Kershaw 1830 Oso Sweet ;)

That should fit around $ 100.- if I look for some decent deals.
If there should be money left over I'd add some Opinels :D

This is the U.S. version btw. ... if I needed to do the same in Germany with € 100.- the list would look much different (knives are just way more expensive here, esp. those from US brands).

Wow, I didn't notice the age of this thread when I changed the title. I'll leave it alone because it looks like fun but...Traditional subforum = Traditional knives only please.

$100, hmmm I would not go traditional if I only have that much and can afford one solid knife. I would go with the spyderco Endura (one of my current beaters that works like a charm) or a BM Griptillian. Both are just reliable and very solid.
Saying that, there are always great deals on knives and if I could only have one for 3 years I would go a modern folder, but I did just score a GEC Viper for that price limit off of the exchange. There are always good deals on the forums.

Seriously? Traditional knives only in this forum. As detailed in the post right before yours?

...You get $100 to buy knives that will have to last you the next 3 years. After that, you'll be back on solid ground financially and will be able to buy more toy.... err, knives. ;) BTW kitchen knives don't count in this $100. I'm just talking about your EDC, gents knife, outdoors knife, etc.

Well, if that were truly my situation, I don't think I'd be concerned with buying a "gent's knife" or a slipjoint at all. I'd buy myself one good fixed blade.

Given $100 I would have to go with:
1.) GEC Bullnose - Would just say a case sodbuster jr but the little bit of added length and lanyard hole really do add $20 to the value of a soddy for me.
2.) Case texas jack- I really have grown to love the GEC #15 pattern for a smaller knife but the price is prohibitive and the Texas jack has done me well for a very long time.

Those two might be pushing the limits of the $100 but a little shopping around could get you there.
