The 2016 knives have landed!

Yes sir! That is GEC's current policy on sfo's, although on certain runs they allow dealers to change the covers or possibly some other minor change on quantities between 50 min. and 100 max. such as the recent 14's. No more special shields unfortunately, unless you are a large (volume wise) enough dealer to finance the 500. (Let's see... 500 knives @ $90 ea. = $45K, for example.) Kinda puts 'em outa reach for me Jack. :)

Certainly out of reach for me too Barry! I hadn't realised GEC had got that BIG. Maybe in future we'll have to take a different approach  There were a lot of suggestions made in the discussion threads using existing GEC patterns, which might have been less problematic. If we were to go back to basics, and just order a nice club knife, as some other knife clubs and forums do, I think there are certainly European cutlers who would give you a great deal for $30,000. Of course there's always someone who suggests we all just go out and buy the same colour Case Sodbuster or Vic Pioneer! :D

I'd be interested to know why Queen declined to get involved with the forum knife. From what I remember, they weren't interested last year either. Is there a reason given, or do they just say no thank you?

I have always wondered if Bill and Ken parted on good terms, and if Ken has a stake in GEC, stock/or investment wise. Bill did go into the history a bit, during the picnic.

I'm not a mod by any means but I think if this it continues is should be moved. There are 4 topics being discussed: First, the knife itself. Second, how we all are privileged that GEC will work to output a forum knife along with others who help make that happen. Third, would GEC be doing as well if it were not for this forum, those of us on here who buy multiples, get on the reserve, may actually keep GEC open and is GEC appreciative of that. The fourth is now the SFO order details.

Anyways

Fair point Brett :o

Is 500 really the minimum number of knives for a GEC Special Factory Order?

This will be my last word on the matter here, but it must be a new for 2016 rule.
They built 53 total knives for another forum last year, and in 2014 they built runs of 50, 25, 65, 354, 22, and 21 "club" knives for 6 different clubs in 2014 (guess who the 354 were for :)), and have been doing similar for years including our 173 pcs in 2013.
You can see their yearly total production by knife, including all SFO's on the GEC website.

And I think buying an existing pattern already "on the schedule" for that year to make it easier on everyone is a great idea.

I'd be pleased to get back on track and talk about the knife.

That is Charlies department, but I assume they had other projects of their own.

Some of you guys might not realize that Charlie and Barry are both in their late 20s. The forum knives have aged them a few years. ;) :p

Talking about a future knife seems sort of odd. We weren't even supposed to get this one. So perhaps we should just enjoy this knife for now. I do hope the tradition continues though.

You are right Jake, certainly something for another time, apologies for rambling on! :o

Exactly, I appreciate each one and the journey gettin' there. I also always expect the last one to be the last one and just enjoy it for what it is, a knife we came together as a community and had input on the final product. Like I said it's journey and the knife we get to hold in our hands is the diary of the journey. Thanks guys great job and Charlie I'll be talkin' to you soon. :)

I'd be pleased to get back on track and talk about the knife.

I'd be pleased also. Let's discuss the knives, please.

Whatever happens in the future, I'm happy to have the forum knives that I've purchased. My thanks to Barry and Charlie for their efforts to continue the Traditional tradition and to Kevin (Spark) for sanctioning it. My thanks to GEC for their continuing support of this community and their very fine dealers.

Here Here!!

I haven't chimed in with thank yous yet, but I do thank Charlie, Barry, and everyone else involved with making this happen. It does appear to be causing mixed feelings amongst some, but what doesn't anymore? Gratitude can go a long way in smoothing anything out. Thanks to everyone for their time, including label writers who haven't been mentioned. :) Barry on a side note, if you've already received money for a forum knife, would it be possible to send you the extra for one of Charlie's sfos, or would that need to be a separate transaction? (because your life isn't complicated enough already :D).
Thanks, and more thanks, Neal

Not to stir the pot, but I did have a "radical " idea, if there is a 2017 forum knife. What about a small ,pocketable fixed blade. It is, after all, "traditional folding and fixed blade knives" . Maybe a run of LT Wright Patriots, with nice covers. Let the comments and scolding begin. :D
Neal

Neal, not really a discussion for this thread, this is the 2016 knife thread :) If you wait long enough someone will start a 2017 knife thread and someone (in fact several of us :)) always bring it up. Let's follow Gary's suggestion and get back on track. :)

This is all an interesting read. But not enough pictures.
The "Drover" (Great name) has been in my pocket since it arrived in the post. It arrived with a great edge and gorgeous scales.
I can't get enough of this knife ! Thanks to Barry, CC, and GEC.

When someone gets a modified version of the forum knife, I'm interested to see how the punch compares to the unmodified version. I assume the modified punch is slightly thinned out to not rub the liner. I assume it's not a noticeable difference between the two, but I don't have either in hand to know for sure. I assume the modified version was an easy fix, but since GEC is still working on them it makes me wonder if the fix is more involved. I know GEC has been busy with the 15's. Thank you, I'm still waiting on mine... and don't plan to see it for at least another 3 weeks.

Well then, back to the second half of my thanks post-would it be possible to upgrade to Charlie's sfo, if an order has been placed but not filled yet? I'm not looking to create more work or headaches for you Barry, just honestly curious.
Thanks, Neal

I really like the lighter color, it looks like the Frankenstein monster's stitches, very cool. :)
