The 2016 knives have landed!

This is a very dangerous practice. You risk permanent damage to the spring that will not be covered under GEC factory warranty. This practice is simply abuse.

Yes, GEC slipped up letting some of these through; they should not have shipped to me. I do not check the knives for fit or function as this is the factory's job at QC. If I checked each knife I would be accused of "cherry picking", not to mention the time involved in opening, checking function and F&F, and all the other issues that some of you have found. Then, after checking, I would need to re-oil and re-package each of the 350 knives. All this for very little to no profit? Give me a break.

Thank you Blee! There has been a lot of complaining to me, and it is mis-placed. Please, please wait for instruction on how we will handle the sticky punch problem. It will likely involve returning the problem knives to the factory for warranty work. If you bend or break the spring, that is not covered under warranty, nor is any other abuse of the knife.

Have a little patience people, please. :(

I don't have a dog in the fight because I did not purchase this knife (yet at least...). And it is a shame if you are receiving angry messages or emails over something out of your hands.

I will say that it seems like everyone is being VERY civil on this issue on this thread. I don't recall anyone blaming you or Charlie for the issues, but occasionally voicing their displeasure at GEC for allowing the knives with issues to get through QC. I personally appreciate the comments on how different guys "fixed" their issues though because IF I do end up getting one of these, it is good to see stories of how the problems were corrected without sending the knife back to GEC and playing the waiting game.

Patience is definitely a virtue, but I would hope that most Knuts out there would try flushing joints and all that before they send theirs in for warranty work. If this solves most of the issues, then it will limit the load on the factory and possibly stop anyone from contacting you and Charlie about the issues. I've found that slipjoints without halfstops from GEC tend to need more cleaning than those with them because of the constant pressure on the spring and hopefully that will cure the majority of the reported issues.

My lowly opinion:

GEC is to knives what BMW is to cars... If I were looking to buy a brand new BMW and it had obvious and serious defects, I wouldn't buy that car.
To the hills with 'warranty work' on a knife that hasn't even seen the sun yet. Ill be returning mine.

With that said, I truly appreciate Barry and Charlie for doing this work every year. I will continue to support this forum and each years knife. Its not your fault the factory let the lemons slip through.
Thanks guys!

Right, Barry isnt hammering these things together in the GEC factory. They put a lot of work into setting this all up for us. We should be thankful that they are willing to go through the trouble every year. Also my horse hasnt arrived just yet :) one horse is due today tho :D

My 2 cents on this...

There's been several posts about what to do if you have a problem. GEC was closed last week and it was posted that the scheduled closing has created a slight delay in coming up with a resolution. Once a resolution is found Charlie and Barry said they would let us know what to do.

If it were me (I'm still waiting my forum knife) and I had a problem that I couldn't take care of myself I would toss it back in the tube and wait to hear what Charlie and Barry instruct us to do.

GEC has superior customer service. I sent a knife with an issue to them last year and I got it back in a week. I believe that was unusually quick turn around time, but my point is it's very unlikely that GEC, Charlie, or Barry are going to leave you with a lemon so just wait a bit to see what the plan is.

You can spend hours fiddling with the knife trying to fix it, or just chill out a bit and wait for the solution to be posted. It's likely it will just end up taking a 15 minute trip to the post office shipping it to GEC and they will fix it and get it right back to you in perfect working order.

I don't mean to offend anyone or down play the frustration of those with problems - I've been there... some of the GEC knives I've had the most problems with are now my favorites. Anyway, those are my thoughts in an effort to help those having problems.

I waiting patiently with you brother. Mine should be here in the next couple hours [emoji106][emoji106]

Beautiful kin' examples everyone, it'll be awhile till I get mine so I'll live vicariously through all your pics. Keep 'em comin' since I started the history of the BFC Traditional Forum's annual knife thread. It's been awhile since I worked on it but as soon as the doc allows me to start usin' my right arm again I can start workin' on it again. Click the link to see what I'm tryin' to do. :)

A soon as I can get my 2016 edition I can take more pics to add to the collection here. Please post as many pics as you can, my hope is to make the thread the only member contributed historical accounting of the longest running annual BFC knife, 11 years and counting. Great job to those involved and great pics everyone, can't wait till I can get mine. :)

right, the SFO should be getting here today, my bladeforums was part of the later preorder, so whenever he gets the rest, that horse will get here

I wish I had ordered one of the SFOs in addition to the 2016 forum knife. Mine is going to be getting lots of pocket time, and the work that went into its birth is much appreciated:) Thanks again to Barry and Charlie!

It's finally here! Blade is smooth. Punch works great. No major issues at all. The punch rubs slightly on the shoulder but it doesn't affect the opening or closing. I'm really stoked for this pattern. Thank you to everyone involved. It's not easy to put in all this work without any benefit. It went right in my pocket. So again, thank you and I really hope we have a knife for next year.

Mine came in on Friday, and this is the first I've had to respond. In all, I'm perfectly satisfied with mine.

The pull on the spear is about a 6.5, which is right where I like it. I need to mention that this was the sharpest GEC knife, Out-of-the-box, that I've yet experienced, as well. That spear needed no additional attention from me, to satisfy my edge requirements.

The punch is about a 7.5 pull, which is to be expected with so little leverage on the short distance to the pivot. The point on the punch is amazingly pointy! I can't remember ever finding such a fine point on a knife blade, ever, though the 2012 knife's wharncliff was close.

Love the color and jigging pattern.

Sorry to hear about the common issues (Really, how common are they, though?). Glad mine didn't have any, but I'm confident all problems will be resolved to everyone's satisfaction.

Positive or negative comments should be allowed here as long as it is done respectfully. I should be able to voice my concerns or opinions on the knife that isn't functioning properly, but that doesn't seem to be the case (give me a break) I was simply stating the status of my knife and I found out that it wasn't a fluke. I haven't sent any PM's or e-mails bashing anyone. This will be my last post so here, and I will voice my concerns directly with GEC.
Best Regards,
Jeff

I love the knife but its very frustrating because nothing works I flushed with wd-40, warm water and soap, and oil bath but still locked up. I left the punch 3/4 of the way open for 48 hrs, still nothing. I will be sending this to gec for repairs, does anyone know the correct procedures for doing this. I got the knife to support BF and its a great pattern but this should have been checked out before leaving the factory.

As has been stated before, please be patient for a little longer so that Charlie and Bill can have a conversation as to how to handle the issue. Thank you.

"patience" is a lazy persons word Barry-...
and if anyone knows that It's me.:D:p I'm lazier than a Sloth on valium.
ah well I suppose I might wander down to the letter box at some stage.
I hope there is an easy solution to the problems.
cheers.

Just to confirm Barry - I'm not having a go at you and I don't want "netiquette" to be broken.
I just hoped to lighten your load out on the gun deck with a bit of humour.
Love your Work.

I'm not sure whats going on behind the scenes but I suspect that Barry and Charlie are taking some heat via pm or email. If this is the case I'm ashamed of my brother board members. Take a collective breath guys. I have one of the defects but I recognize that Barry or Charlie had nothing to do with creating the problem. Instead, they've told us that they'd work hard to get it resolved. GEC was closed for vacation...give them a chance for god sakes. It really isn't life or death for crying out loud.

mine just came in, well Charlie's SFO did. and man that tube was tight. the tube was harder to open than the knife! :D

here it is all taken out

there she is

oh yeah ;) the iceman cometh

I am pleased with my example, cant wait to see my 2016 blade forums knife!

I have some stuff to post on the BF and SFO versions. I will wait until post #120 comes up so it's at the top of the page!

Even though mine came out fine I'm sure there's some people that need some help
