The 2016 knives have landed!

Those are super looking. The punches look sharp and the worm grove is nice on that bone.

Love the pumpkin pictures!

Put me in the boat with those that have problems. Like many, my punch will not open unless the main is open, and will not close without assistance.

Mine arrived on the 7th, but I didn't want to be "that guy" and post a problem. I just shelved it, with the intention of not carrying it, as the jigging and punch aren't my cup of tea. I got it just to support, and continue with the forum knife series, no big deal. I hate to say it, but I'm glad I wasn't the only one with an issue.

Haven't decided whether to send it in for fixing, or just leave it as is.

Mine was a little stiff at first, but it is snappy with about a 5 on the blade and 7 on the awl.

Having carried the knife for a couple days now, and today putting it to use as my apple cutter, I have to say it is getting to be my favorite pattern of the forum knives (I don't have the first three though)...

Have confidence that GEC will handle any issues, and eventually everyone will have a wonderful knife.

got mine saturday
arguably the worst functioning knife i've ever gotten from GEC

my punch blade was rock solid stuck, regardless of the spear blade position. It required prying it out with the tip of a flat blade screw driver. When closing, the punch didnt snap close either. The spear blade had a reasonable pull, a bit on the high side (~8 maybe), but also would not snap close. In fact, beyond not snapping close, there was so much tension on each blade that neither would close unless I pushed them, even if they were just barely above where they would stop on their ricassos.

A flush and oil and really no difference. Like others, I left the knife open on 3/4'ish where I could see the blade spring being pushed out the farthest, but I did mine a little more extreme than others. I did this for BOTH blades at the SAME time, putting more stress on everything. Furthermore, having experienced some issues like this on other knives, I knew this wouldnt be enough, so on the punch blade side, I hammered in a small picture nail between the blade spring and punch blade. Was tricky getting it in there, but not too bad. This put even more preload on everything. I would measure the picture nail, but it really isnt too critical, as the liners really dictate the maximum size you can fit in there. Mine probably had about ~.005-.010 worth of clearance.

That was roughly 24 hours ago.

While in this position, I then again (just about an hour ago) flushed with warm soapy water and liberally sprayed it down with WD40 to displace the water from all the joints. (In case you were wondering, that's what the WD in WD-40 stands for...Water Displacement)

Taking the picture nail out and working the pivots a bit, I could tell things were much better.
The spear pull is maybe what I would call a 4, which is a little lighter than I'd like, but the punch is now about a 6.
Closing, the punch actually snaps close but the spear is still a little lazy sometimes. It will probably break in.
I was having trouble finding my prefered knife lube, but for now the WD is working OK for that.

In my opinion, this not only loosened things up in the blade spring axis, but probably also opened up the distance between the liners a tad due to any flex in the knife transverse to the spring force. Guessing this was just enough to give some extra clearance between the liners and blades, though I still hear the punch rubbing on its liner when closing.

I'm getting real tired of this junk and the fact that I've NEVER gotten a sharp GEC, that this will probably be my last one. Really sad because I have some other knives from them that are just superb. This knife was obviously never checked at the factory and should have never been sent out. Period.

Hopefully this is helpful to someone and they can avoid sending their knife back to GEC if they feel comfortable doing what I did. Proceed at your own risk.

Post office was closed today so I'm waiting for tomorrow delivery. Excited either way. I will fix it if there's any issues...kinda weird but I'm actually hoping its has some sort of problem so that I can work on the knife haha. I enjoy that sort of thing.

I love the knife but its very frustrating because nothing works I flushed with wd-40, warm water and soap, and oil bath but still locked up. I left the punch 3/4 of the way open for 48 hrs, still nothing. I will be sending this to gec for repairs, does anyone know the correct procedures for doing this. I got the knife to support BF and its a great pattern but this should have been checked out before leaving the factory.

I've had mine for a few days. No serious issues. The punch cannot be opened without assistance if the blade is closed. But it can be opened easily enough when the blade is open. Nice jigging and worm groove, though I expected the groove to be deeper (maybe it looks better in all the nice pics posted).

Thanks again, Charlie and Barry. I know Charlie said he didn't want to be involved in the 2014 BF knife, and it might not have happened without his stepping in. And Barry initially said he would not be handling the shipping for his year's knife. There are reasons to not be involved, and I think most people are thankful that you did, and I hope you guys don't get too much grief for doing so.

I am so looking forward to getting my knife. Barry sent it last week, and USPS decided that the quickest way to Oregon from Washington was through California for some reason, so I have been bouncing back and forth like an anxious raccoon for days. Nothing like the wait for a knife. I know that there have been some issues for folks with the punch, but I am just so excited.
Im so glad you posted this abbydaddy. When I
first saw that my knife had gone from washington to Las Angeles and I live in Canada I was getting a little worried but I guess the shortest distance between two points means very little when there are several other point's involved lol. Good luck on your knife A.D. I got my fingers and toes crossed as I type this post
Thinking of the two I have comming :D Ether way through it's good to know it will all work out in the end. GEC and it's dealer's have all been great to me. :D

This is a very dangerous practice. You risk permanent damage to the spring that will not be covered under GEC factory warranty. This practice is simply abuse.

Yes, GEC slipped up letting some of these through; they should not have shipped to me. I do not check the knives for fit or function as this is the factory's job at QC. If I checked each knife I would be accused of "cherry picking", not to mention the time involved in opening, checking function and F&F, and all the other issues that some of you have found. Then, after checking, I would need to re-oil and re-package each of the 350 knives. All this for very little to no profit? Give me a break.

Thank you Blee! There has been a lot of complaining to me, and it is mis-placed. Please, please wait for instruction on how we will handle the sticky punch problem. It will likely involve returning the problem knives to the factory for warranty work. If you bend or break the spring, that is not covered under warranty, nor is any other abuse of the knife.

Have a little patience people, please. :(

thanks for your opinion
really though, I am so sick of this garbage, that if the knife blew up, i'd have happily thrown it out
good riddance

the fact that this level of abuse was required to even get the knife functioning AT ALL is testament to what condition it was in

We will have civility in this thread and in this forum. If we don't infractions will be forthcoming.

Barry and Charlie have both stated that GEC will be contacted on how to address the problems some folks are having with the forum knife.

Most of you enjoy this yearly project. Don't jeopardize it.

I feel like that civility and infraction comment was directed at me.
I thanked Barry for his opinion. I suppose one could read sarcasm into it, but that wasnt intended.

My response was intended to address the comment about warranty and waiting and the condition of what I received.
I should also note, I never bothered Barry or Charlie (neither of them is at fault), and instead took matters into my own hands and also warned people they would be proceeding at their own risk if they decided to do the same. I could have waited for a warranty like everyone else, but decided I didnt want to do that.

My calling my specific knife garbage is my own opinion as reflected by what I received. It is in no way calling anyone else's knife garbage. Just this sample of one.
I dont see what my sample of one has to do with the yearly project either. I frequently carry the 2014 which I should note also had some problems that I ALSO had to fix doing a similar technique. I bought 3 of them actually, to give 2 as gifts, and all 3 needed work. Fool me once I suppose....

This knife is growing on me. It's that punch that is so well done, and would seem so useful to many tasks.
Decisions...Decisions

If it was your post that I was specifically referring to, I would have quoted it. I've been doing this long enough to recognize what might happen. In my opinion a forewarning is better then having to remove posts and infract members. That is why I posted.

Charlie and Barry have taken on this yearly knife project for a few years now. They don't make a dime on it. They do it for the community of traditional knife lovers we have here. If it becomes too much of a headache, they may have different thoughts about it in the future. GEC will honor their warranty.

If you want to discuss it further, please take it to Visitor Messages or email. Thanks.

Understand. Thanks for your response, Gary.

I have no more to say other than thanks and good luck to everyone with problems.
