The 2024 F**** K****?

Doubtful. The demand, as far as they're concerned, is total. They sell every single knife they make, most within 30 seconds of being posted across their dealer network.
True, but we're talking about a special order BF knife. I'm sure it will sell out instantly but, at least with the Bunny Knife, there was active participation in the design process.

I wish GEC would make more of their knives, hire some more people, mass produce certain parts like blades that can be used in a variety of models. I can't see GEC making money off of the resale market so it would make sense to sell more (or raise the price or both).

I wonder if investing in certain types of tools in addition to what they are using would help. I've written software control systems for some manufacturing tools (different field than knives) and I'm sure that some stuff could be automated, reducing the number of steps required by the craftsmen. Then again, that could backfire in that it burns them out even faster having less variety of activities. I dunno. I just want more GEC knives to be more accessable. They are such awesome designs and quality.

I hate to be the one to have to say it, but several folks here have spoken to Bill many times in the past with these exact suggestions, and his response has always been along the lines of "Nah, we're good." Bill runs GEC how he wants to run it. We just deal with the waves as best we can.

sir, I believe you're referring to the pride of my stable, and one of my life's greatest accomplishments; the green hemlock sawcut bone #86 spring street barlow.
I can't take credit for the final form, but I sure had a lot of fun egging on the discussions.

What's happened to me? I used to be so young, energetic and full of wonder...

In years past, we as a forum would participate in a series of threads where we chose various metrics of what would be the finalized BF Knife. The last few have been more a case of Bill telling our representative (Charlie, Spark, etc.) what he's able to make, we see a picture, and you're free to either buy it or not. It's been just a cover variant of a currently being-produced knife. We don't really get to dicker over choices of covers, blades, model, etc. like we used to. We gets what we gets, and that's what it is. I don't have an issue with this in general, but it can't be denied that we have had some absolute beauties in years past when there was more choice in the process.

Yes, there were some really nice beauties produced and equally important were guys contributing their ideas. You could could count on getting on the forum each day and seeing a few pages of discussion and interaction between members about design details and it also became a learning process for us novice knife collectors learning about various elements of a knife. And it was just plain out fun to read post after post that was a collaborative effort to design and vote on the details for a great knife - one in which our ownership for the knife would grow. Even the design of the tube came from our scholarly local poet Meako who made a plain white GEC tube into a Blade Forums gift, and busting on the newbies became harmless sport.

Yes, difficult to deny that some absolute beauties were produced when there was much more choice in the process along with a lot of fun for everybody.

It's open to all the forums...
What I meant was how to make sure people who vote are ones who'll buy, and not vote, say, to spoil the end product?

I'm sure that some stuff could be automated
That's not how traditional cutlery is made. They will be automating stuff eventually, but not to ramp up the production methinks.
I just want more GEC knives
And I want them to stay as traditional as they can and I surely don't want them to become some kind of modern classic-ish mass production. But does it matter who wants what?..

Bill runs GEC how he wants to run it.
Amen to that.

OK. So we're all agreed that the 2024 Forum Knife should be a #66 Stockman, with ebony covers, and cloud, or hot dog shield; OR a #35 Churchill, with ebony, and cloud or hot dog shield. And they should build enough for everybody.

Right? Amiright?
:)

YES, I AM VERY EXCITED ABOUT THE UPCOMING #77 BARLOW, THANK YOU FOR ASKING.

(#35 churchill please and thank you.)

A fellow forum member once told me (and I won't out him here in case his relationship with Bill Howard is on the line) that Bill Howard actually can't fathom why we all think we need more that one knife.
Having seen the man in person, I believe it, and I chuckle about it every time I think about it.

I vote for caramel popcorn colored giraffe bone handles.

Does this count as a PostHo post or something that resembles a useful post?
You'll find peace once you realize that most of the posts in this thread are not useful, grasshopper.

... Except mine, and you all don't have to thank me, but just know you're welcome.

I had a conversation with him a couple years ago at the Rendezvous. He is beside himself in disbelief GEC knives are this popular and sought after. He said, I make a quality tool. I was just as beside myself that he does what he does and doesn't get it. Lol. I told him so stop making cool knives! That was close to the end of the conversation. Ha. But you can see in his eyes he was serious. That is the sign of an artist.

I have never purchased a forum knife with the pattern in mind or any sort of concern over its resale value. For me, a forum knife has always been about the process which, for better or worse, has involved bringing us all together to choose a knife that represents our community here on BF. I've made impassioned arguments for some features/patterns over the years and for my part, it was in good fun. Unfortunately, it made enemies so I am not so inclined to participate in such discussions anymore. We have an uncanny ability to suck the fun right out of a process that should be about camaraderie and our community here.

Whatever is decided, I will purchase. It is my way of supporting and vaunting a community that I still value being a part of. In that respect, what knife it is and what it might fetch in a flipper's hands matters little to me.

Same here, with "community" to me being BF as a whole, rather than just the Porch (don't mean to imply that's what you meant, just wanted my stance to be clear).

Some us won't.
I for one won't see you miss out..IF it eventuates.😃

Master how is it that you are so wise and so modest at the same time?😆👍
