The 25, 21, Regular and Umnumzaan comparison photos ***VIDEO & Pics Inside***

I think you got a factory second. Doesn't Spyderco put a similar notch on their blades to denote a factory second?

Nice review on Youtube. I really want to like this knife. IMO, it combines the best features of the Umnumzaan and the Sebenza 21 for almost a perfect knife. If only Mr. Reeve did not insist on putting the upside down inscription. I would not buy a BMW if it had an upside down logo, or a $400 knife. I guess that is my OCD kicking in. Too bad for me.

I would like to know why the Zaan is not upside down and the Seb is?

This Zaan was born 9/4/12

I was told today from Heather at CRK, that the indention on the spine is for machining purposes. It holds the blade while rounding off the spine of the knife and something to do with the thumb lugs as well. It doesn't make sense to me since this has never been needed in the past.

Funny, mines sideways... lol

In the past, it was done by hand, perhaps. Now it isn't.

Very interesting info on the indention...thanks for asking BBQ

I once gave my take on the way the IM stamp is "upside down, right side up". Here it is again just for discussion:

Look at US service men and woman's uniforms. They all have the US flag patch on their shoulder with the stars going forward. I remember when the military first started doing this that it looked very odd, but someone explained to me that it was as if someone was holding the flag on a staff, marching forward, that that's how the flag would fly. I would prefer it wasn't set on the uniform like that, but hey, I don't make the decisions:)

Damn...I was hoping that notch was just going to be a short time thing to get things going....looks like if its used for maching it will most likely stay. Bollocks!

But I do agree on they never needed it in the past so why now?

I really doubt CRK even offers factory seconds.

The Sebenza is a mid-tech knife and a lot of the finishing is done by hand. I'm only speculating, but I would assume the spine rounding was done by hand up until now. Maybe they are machining the spine now, this is more cost effective.

Again, I'm just speculating.

Hmm. Looks like a 21 blade with dressed up jimping and an out of place notch. Why didn't they stick to the Proto? The blade shape doesn't even look the same. I'm kind of sad, to be honest.

I really think its the same as the anniversary ones. I've looked at a few dealer pics, and some look more like the 21, and others really show the boldness of the new shape. I'm thinking its the different pic angles?

Please note that this explanation is not correct. What Heather said was to the effect of "the notch aids us in the manufacturing process. It marks the transition from a rolled back to the square edge of the thumb grooves". It has nothing whatsoever to do with holding the blade, or with the thumb lugs. To clarify a little further - the back edge of the blade from the notch to the tip is rounded - a process done by hand that we call rolling the back. The section where the thumb grooves are is flat. The notch creates an area of transition between the two.

Thanks Anne. That's how Heather explained it to me but the explanation got lost within my translation. It's a very fine knife, regardless. I'm 100% happy with it.

Nice of her to chime in. BBQ should get some credit from CRK for showing all of this and supporting this release. Great education. Sold me. And I wasn't even ever going to even buy the 25. Ever! Now I am. Does a perfect knife exist? Maybe. It can be perfect to you. I'm excited. I think there are way more positives than negatives here. Still the yardstick I use to compare everything.

This, completely and utterly this:thumbup:

Can't thank BBQ enough for taking the time to post, take apart multiple knives, shoot a vid, and answer all questions. I am very excited to get mine after reading all this. Looks like I'm down on the list, but worth the wait all the same.

So true. How far? :( Road trip? I have relatives in Whiting.

Got my 25 in today & am very pleased! There are things I like better about my 21s but it's surely a fantastic piece. CRK all the way & easily one of the best made knives I've ever seen. It may just take some getting used to. Overall it could well be the finest Sebenza to date.
