The Ashokan pole arm challenge.......

I just might fly up this year. Any good places to bunk near the campus? Maybe I'll rent a minivan and bunk in the back.
Stacy

Bunk on the campus (dormitory) or pay a little for a cabin! There is also a hotel in town (windy road about 5 miles out as I remember).

Man, oh man, why do i have to miss it again =( Prior plans, made a year ago, for the NH Highland games which happen to be the same weekend, are preventing me from going. Now back to the topic of pole arm weapons... i cant for the life of me find a reference with a good size scale for a kwan dao, anyone got one that they can get approximate measurements of so i can size mine right when i make it? =P

"Neck pole arm"??????????
Mike, you trying to make something that will fit in the glove box with you?
I guess you'll have to keep it small if your gonna try and get Paul in there with you too.:D

I looked a little last night and didn't come up with anyplace.......anyone know where to get some poles??????... Other than Sam's special place?;)
Thanks
Mace

Read this posting the day Mace wrote it.

I'm still "THINKING" about finishing the gladius sword from last year,,,,maybe I'll have a chance to forge (stay away from stock removal ) and finish a pole arm for this year.

I've got a walnut tree in my back yard, I wonder if there's a branch long and straight enough? :jerkit:

Well I am fairly sure I will be going this year. hopefully the people I will be riding with will be ok with me bringing a pole arm with me. All I need to do is come up with an idea I like and find the spare time to make it.

I do have a question though what will you guys be using for the pole? I am guessing that not everyone will be using a striptease pole like Sam. I was thinking I could turn a pole out on the lathe but I am not sure what wood would be the best. Would oak be ok?
I was also thinking anyone having trouble with the length issue could make it sectional like a pool cue.

I hope to see some in progress pics as you guys get working on yours. Also I may bring a sword I am working on for show and tell (if its done).
One last thing would any of you guys be intrisested in some cherry burl and/or spalted maple if I brought some with me? I have LOTS.

You could laminate long narrow boards together if you need a really long pole. Bevel it to an octagon with a tablesaw and then round it off with a jack plane. Ash would be a traditional choice for a European pole-arm, IIRC. I would think you'd want a wood that's strong in tension, e.g. elm or hickory.

Hey guys,
Please try and take good clear pics of your work in progress. Maybe we can make a nice little article for one of the knife mags. Could be cool.

Delbert's wood sales attracted quite a crowd last year. Several others were selling too. I'm certainly interested.

A question about Ashokan:
Is it pronounced, ash-O-can, or ashow-ken ?
Stacy

BTW, Airport security is going to hate me !
