The Ashokan pole arm challenge.......

Wow,,,,,Pole arm,,,,jez, I guess in that case you must have Pole legs too :jerkit: , or at least 1/4

Well I am fairly sure I will be going this year. hopefully the people I will be riding with will be ok with me bringing a pole arm with me. All I need to do is come up with an idea I like and find the spare time to make it.

I do have a question though what will you guys be using for the pole? I am guessing that not everyone will be using a striptease pole like Sam. I was thinking I could turn a pole out on the lathe but I am not sure what wood would be the best. Would oak be ok?
I was also thinking anyone having trouble with the length issue could make it sectional like a pool cue.

I hope to see some in progress pics as you guys get working on yours. Also I may bring a sword I am working on for show and tell (if its done).
One last thing would any of you guys be intrisested in some cherry burl and/or spalted maple if I brought some with me? I have LOTS.

I have a Hanwei dealership, and can get 84 inch by 1 1/4 inch ash poles (msrp 29.00, I'm not sure what shipping costs would be)

Here is a photo of a Polish hunting knife I have.It was custom made, in the 1890's, for Alexandar Grimm Bellinski (the first telephone Pole).

Wow Stacy! Nice...uh...knife.;)

Hey Page! I want one of those poles....does that place have a website?
Mace

Mace, I believe that CAS Iberia's webpage is the site you are looking for.

By the way, this is the kind of thing we will be expecting from you this year, now that you are a Journeyman Smith. :D

indeed, CASIBERIA is the company. Mace, you may qualify as a dealer if you apply, they don't sell retail.

Chris, nice pic!

Mace, you're right Chris is good with photo shop, but Brad Pitt, nobody is that good with photo shop

Looks like I'll be going for this too. My student Mark got really excited when I told him about this. So I'm demonstrating for him. Of course mine will be out of damascus.

Erik,
Its either that or bronze, you know I have an allergy to working in anything else. Speaking of which I may do an informal bronze forging demo on sat night.

OOOHHHH Cooooool! I've been wanting to do some of that!:thumbup:

Bronze is weird to forge, too hot and it crumbles, too cold and it first work hardens really fast and then crumbles >_< I need to get back out in the shop, but iv'e been preparing a card collection for sale to pay for some badly needed home improvements to my house (new furnace, new water heater, and 100 to 200 amp service upgrade) and haven't been in the shop for a while other than to forge out a seax 2 weeks ago.

Justin,
Yes bronze is weird to forge, but I tell you that the rules are alot easier than with steel. Of course if you are used to working steel, then it seems even worse.
