The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

I wish the DEK1 were just a few weeks out, but it doesn't look like they will start shipping before the end of the year.

Shipping and paying for are two separate things though. If you're planning on shipping anywhere near end of year the pre-order must be fairly close.....or......are we not getting a pre-order, will it be a UFK sales model?

I won't start with a pre-order. If we don't make enough for the first production run and we need to do another round then that round would have a pre-order.I don't think this will be a problem this time around, I plan to make plenty.

Thank you for clarifying that. Sounds good to me, I like the exciting first sales combined with knowing you'll eventually get one as there's plenty

Good Morning Nathan, I have a couple of questions for ya:cool:

Don't know if this has been addressed, but what is the width of the Behemother?

Any comparison pictures available of the Behemoth and Behemother?

Are the Rubber inlay scales available ONLY in Natural Canvas (with rubber inlay), or can they be made with Different Color Micarta"

Thanks

Tom

No worries about rushing anything ... and I appreciate the open and honest answers you share with us.

That means I will probably jump in on the Behemother order ... and have plenty of time to be ready for the DEK whenever it gets released.

Thanks- JJ

It's about 2 1/8" wide

The rubber inlay scales are already made (this isn't a pre-order) and they're all made on natural canvas micarta. I ran four sheets, so there are a total of 16 rubber inlay available. They work really well and I recommend them if you're doing any kind of a race event with this knife. The superior grip and stability reduce wonky cuts when you're dialed up to 11.

Nathan, I have never had anything with the rubber inlays and with the limited numbers made/available, I fear that I may lose out if I don't at least try a set but I'm no comp cutter by any means. Heck why lie, I'm not any sorta cutter by any means!!! So with that said by this CPK-nincompoop, how do you assess and recommend TT which I believe to be your most grippy handles before the inlay / natural hybrid? An overkill for someone like me? Your take would be greatly appreciated as it seems that I can't wait to spend another $150 with Jo o_O

TT works well but it's ugly. I use edge cut antique or rubber on my choppers.

Nathan,
It seems that the HDMC scales are slightly thicker than what came on the BC. Is that correct and will they still fit as flush? How much are extra scales in buffed Tri-color Micarta for the HDMC and Utility
Fighter? Email Jo to order?

HDMC are the same scales as the BC. Contact Jo for pricing and availability.

Hey Boss, have you decided if you're doing perpendicular to the edge or horizontal along the edge WRT satin finish requests?

A hint wishlist per photo stolen from Chip ;)

I'm still working on it

Just a consideration, lengthwise hides sheath scratches way better:thumbsup:

Thanks Nathan. I've requested a back up set of AECM handle scales already but was just wondering if a 2nd back up set of inly/micarta was going to be worthwhile for me. Irrespective, I'm going with TT assembled and the rest, whether one or both, as loose :)

I’ve never purchased second scales not back ups. Now you have me thinking about it.:confused::D Mike

The HDMC, production MC, Behemoth and Behemother all use the same scales. It's just that the slab of D3V steel on the HDMC is thicker, so the handle ends up thicker.

I personally like the feel of that thicker handle (but I could palm a basketball back when I played in HS. Folks with smaller hands may feel differently).

Thanks, saved me some dollars and disappointment.

the bottom end for edge stability for Delta 3V is around 13 degrees per side. There is too much carbide and chromium in it to go narrower than that.

If I remember correctly a scandi grind is lower than 13DPS. Usually it's 11DPS. So if the bottom end for edge stability is 13DPS, what about all the other 3V knives (from other makers or production knives) with a scandi grind?
Does it means the normal 3V can go lower than D3V? Or scandi grind is special compared to other grinds? Or the other makers don't prioritize edge stability?
