The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

Q for fellow #notnathans who pay closer attention:

Are there going to be more of the EDC1.2 pattern to be offered in the upcoming Fridays’ Sales beyond today’s or did Nathan just bundle everything up in this pre-order to be able to move on with CPK’s other projects? If Nathan has already answered this, I must have missed it!

He states it right below the options area in the "order process" section. ;)

*shrug* Idunno. I can have anything I want, I always go for Delta 3V

The Setup: My dilemma is I have an older EDC1 in 4V (best edge retention but worst corrosion resistance), and a newer EDC2 in D3V (good balance but not quite stainless); and I want the latest version.

So I thought having at least one in Magnacut with Ti hardware as an “okay to stay wet and sweaty for a while” knife should be my next choice. THEREFORE I preordered Magnacut, and maybe I’ll have a “saltwater” knife while I live in the middle of CO with no beaches nearby.

Soooo, I avoided the satin and swedge to save $250, thinking if I added those that it would also make it easier to damage the MC blade if it’s facing hard use someday. I don't plan to beat it up, but sometimes it might be the only one you have with you.

Q: Will the Magnacut be good and strong enough with a hollow grind and swedge, or is it best to leave it flat grind stonewashed? I tend to think that SW is more corrosion resistant if I had picked D3V, but Magnacut wont typical let rust into the little grooves.

Because this knife was so awesome that the color had to be retired, like Michael Jordan's jersey #23 for the Bulls.
Yeah, I managed to snag an FK3 just like that, with the help of a proxy.

I really like the bright blue Micarta, for how well it stands out, whether in the greens of Summer, or the browns and orange of Fall.

Most of my CPKs have been Terotuf, with an AECM here and there, and a Ghost Black FK2, i.e. they easily disappear.

The whole reason I decided to try the bright blue, is because even the orange scales can potentially blend into Fall leaf litter, depending on where you are.

...Q: Will the Magnacut be good and strong enough with a hollow grind and swedge...
...Have Mark hand grind a hollow ground swedge to my EDC (not machined, every one is a little different) $125...
Unless I misunderstood Nathan's wording, with the swedge option only the swedge is hollow ground, not the overall grind. Someone check me on this, but if correct it may help with your decision.

I thought only the swedge was hollow ground , didn't see an option for the blade to be hollow ground

I'm going to run down to Charlotte and have lunch with Mark

And then drink some beers with Mark

And then do some reloading with Mark

And then do a little target shooting with Mark

And then take a nap (not with Mark)

And have dinner and a movie with Jo today

Nathan, why do you prefer Friday sales to be first come first serve versus a random number generator for anyone that posts in the first minute or two?
#notnathan I’m biased because I can never get in before top 50 even when trying but this would be a great equitable idea . Just seems like a hassle to administer and execute for Nathan and Jo

Not Nathan, but I've had this conversation with him in the past, and also earlier today, with both he and Jo.

Basically, he likes to keep things as simple and direct as possible...in order to streamline their operation and reduce the number of steps and potential hiccups encountered.

I have volunteered my services to run an RNG app on their behalf that I have found to be very good, so as to lighten their load operationally. (Speaking as an impartial and uninterested party to the sales.) It's up to Nate and Jo if they want to go down that road, but the matter is at least under consideration. Whatever conclusion they arrive at is fine with me, as I have no intention of overstepping.

And that's all I have on that score.

This would be awesome even as a trial run or two, even if mixed in occasionally with the usual FCFS which is the simplest method for Nathan. Thank you for volunteering your services and time. Much appreciated.
