The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

This was my first preorder. I’m in no hurry and frankly just got extremely lucky to be able to get in (do to my job) how soon will I get a confirmation email ?
Jo will spend the next couple/few weeks working through order confirmations for the Friday sale and the Preorder. Just make sure you have an email attached to your Bladeforums profile or upgrade your Bladeforums membership to at least basic level so she can DM you.

Not sure if this was already asked before.
Just want to know Nathan's point of view, why do you prefer and recommend VIP over Crusty VIP in the latest EDC preorder?
Same material. The “crusty” is just the stuff that has an edge that has been exposed and has started to darken due to oxidation. This is going to happen to the “non-crusty” VIP with use and exposure to light and air. So you can pay extra for the stuff where this reaction has already occurred, or you can get the regular stuff and let it occur naturally over time while you own it. In the end, it will all look the same. I have found that usage causes the oxidation to happen more rapidly.

Not Nathan, but if I recall correctly, because it saves you money and is excellent quality.

ETA: I see my friend Cap'n Smudge has already ably answered the question, and more comprehensively to boot.

Pardon my ignorance, but if one were to order acid wash and Mark's handground swedge, would the acid wash be done first or second? In other words, would the swedge be shiny or acid-washed?

It will get ground, tumbled, and then acid washed

The Setup: My dilemma is I have an older EDC1 in 4V (best edge retention but worst corrosion resistance), and a newer EDC2 in D3V (good balance but not quite stainless); and I want the latest version.

So I thought having at least one in Magnacut with Ti hardware as an “okay to stay wet and sweaty for a while” knife should be my next choice. THEREFORE I preordered Magnacut, and maybe I’ll have a “saltwater” knife while I live in the middle of CO with no beaches nearby.

Soooo, I avoided the satin and swedge to save $250, thinking if I added those that it would also make it easier to damage the MC blade if it’s facing hard use someday. I don't plan to beat it up, but sometimes it might be the only one you have with you.

Q: Will the Magnacut be good and strong enough with a hollow grind and swedge, or is it best to leave it flat grind stonewashed? I tend to think that SW is more corrosion resistant if I had picked D3V, but Magnacut wont typical let rust into the little grooves.

There is no hollow ground option. However, if you have Mark hand grind a swedge on it, that swedge will be a hollow grind.

Nathan, why do you prefer Friday sales to be first come first serve versus a random number generator for anyone that posts in the first minute or two?

I appreciate the straightforward simplicity of it.

A lot of people seem to want something different so I will look into it.

If you were on the pre-order you need to send an email to Jo once you have finalized your order.

If you're ordering a knife in this pre-order: post in this thread first and then send an email to Jo at jocarothers (at) gmail (dot) com with this subject line: "EDC preorder" and include your post# in that subject line.

Please include the following information in your email:

1: Your post number on this pre-order thread.

2: Bladeforums name. (for example "Jo the Machinist")

3: Real Name.

4: PayPal email address so we can send a paypal invoice (or ask about other payment options)

5: Shipping address.

6: Any special instructions.

Once we receive this information, if everything is there, Jo will send you a PayPal invoice. If information is missing or you have additional questions, Jo will reply to your email. When your email is read and processed we will send you a reply letting you know we've received your information

They're the same material. The crusty comes from the outside surface so it has a little bit more visual interest perhaps, but they are the same high quality outstanding near Westinghouse quality Micarta, and the standard VIP is a better price and a better value.

Nathan since you mentioned the edcs in magnacut would come much later, if we ordered 2, one in D3V and other in MC, would that delay the total order / delivery ? Asking about the pre-order

Yes that will delay your order. However, if you want to pay shipping twice, you could request to place two separate orders and have the knives shipped separately.

You would request two separate invoices for two separate orders and pay two different bills and receive two different packages.

It is important that it is actually two separate orders because what will happen is we will end up shipping the first knife of the order and we might forget about the second one, because that is not how our system here is designed to work. But two separate orders would not be a problem.
