The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

Hey Nathan the Machinist Nathan the Machinist - I was on Knife Steel Nerds yesterday and noticed that Larrin announced they're dropping a new steel called "MagnaMax" which would appear to be a much tougher iteration of Magnacut. Sounds like they sent out some of it to some Knifemakers already.

Do you think this is something you'll incorporate into your lineup of steels in the future?

Heres the article: https://knifesteelnerds.com/2026/01/19/magnamax-is-here-the-next-evolution-in-knife-steel/
It is lower toughness, but better edge retention vs Magnacut.

The drill chuck that came on my old manual lathe, which I have had for 25 years now, has finally taken a shit. I need to replace this drill chuck. Do you think I should replace it with a keyless Chuck? Or stick to the old school conventional style?

Is it for steel, or wood? Because then you’d have to consider how much wood can a wood Chuck chuck? 😜

Old engine lathe as in South Bend, Hardinge, Mori Sieki, yes, even Asian imports. Keyless has always been my fav..
Old skool my preference is slip-on Vans pro model 🤙

I believe there's a direct correlation between cancer and male genitalia size.

Anecdotal evidence seems to point in that direction.

Incidentally, I am expecting to remain cancer free throughout my life. (Though I do eat copious amounts of sugar so some risk factors may still be there.)

I also believe that the key to chucking a chuck is not based on how much wood the chuck has chucked but whether it was vertically chucked creating upchuck. Also, putting down a chuck that has taken a shit is the most sanitary action and should be done with G-10 or micarta. (None of that fuzzy crap!)
